NIGHTINGALE PLEDGE
(ORIGINAL)
I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence
of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my
profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is
deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly
administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to
maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and
will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my
keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in
the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid
the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare
of those committed to my care.
"This lamp... was a symbol
of all Florence Nightingale
stood for, comfort and
kindness and gentleness
and courage, and an
unswerving devotion to
duty. Perhaps deep
down, she knew even then
that the light from it
would go on shining far
into the future..."

The Graduates would like to take a few moments to
express their gratitude and appreciation .
I would first and foremost like to thank my husband. His support,
encouragement, and patience meant the world to me these past two years. I
could not imagine having to go through nursing school without you. I would
also like to thank my mama, because having someone to talk to who has been
through nursing school was such a big help. She always knew just what to
say to lift my spirits! To my in-laws, thanks for all of the support you have
given and continue to give, it is much appreciated. Any friend or family that I
did not name, thank you for your support and for the much needed
distraction every once in a blue moon. Carla and Elizabeth, thank you for
your guidance and wisdom these past two years, we are a really lucky class
to have had the two of you as instructors for the duration of our nursing
education.
It certainly takes a village to raise a nursing student, my sincerest
gratitude to everyone in my "village“.
-Jessica
I cant even begin to express all of my gratitude to all the people that have helped
me get here!
Carla and Elizabeth, you are sooo much more than just instructors.
Lynne-my mentor and inspiration.
Bonnie - by far my biggest cheerleader.
My parents, (especially Cindy-for being so passionate and great at what she does
and introducing me to it.)
My brother, for saving me time and time again..
Dawn, my best friend in the world, whose list of thank you’s is simply too long for
this slide.
Mom and Dad Foster – (who always called me Nurse Misty) and my Mum who are
watching down over me and pushing me along.
Donnie, my very patient and supportive husband who I couldn’t do any of this
without..
And most of all, my son, Nicholas who has sacrificed the most through all of this.
And of course, the Brunswick Girls…..I love you guys
-M.
I want to thank my family for being so supportive of me these past couple of
years. I haven’t been around as much as I would have liked, and I have
missed many family gatherings and special occasions, but through all of this
you all have stood by me and encouraged me to keep pushing through. You
will never know how much your support and encouragement mean to me. I
love you! Thank you to my friends and co-workers who have
helped, supported, and encouraged me! I also want to thank my
instructors, Carla and Elizabeth. I appreciate all you have taught me, and I
feel lucky to have had you for all four semesters. I will miss both of
you! Naomi, Thank you for pushing me onto the Behavioral Health unit, it
wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be! Last but not least, I would
like to thank the 10 amazing ladies I have had the honor of spending the last
two years with. This has been an extremely stressful, yet wonderful
experience, and I wouldn’t have wanted to share these memories with
anyone else! I love you all!!
Hannah
Guam,
Thank you for being a single dad for the past two years so I could study and go to clinicals.
as well as being patient with me while I was stressed, moody and tearful (pretty much the
whole two years!). I think you have enough patience for the both of us, which is a good thing
since I seem to be lacking in that department.
Max,
Thank you for being so understanding during this long journey. There were many nights that
I was not there for you because I was working and taking classes; after seven long years, it
has finally come to an end.
Mom,
Thank you for always encouraging me to do more and for being there no matter what. You
are my rock and I would not have made it this far without you.
Family, Friends &Teachers,
Thank you for the kind words, encouragement, knowledge and support.
-Melissa-
I am so proud to be among the 2013 Midcoast Campus
SMCC graduating class of ADN. This group has shared
memories that will last for a lifetime. I can honestly say that
if one day I look up and see any of you as my nurse, I will
know that I am in good hands. I would like to thank my
family for their love and support. Thank you to my husband
for the encouragement and support to finish school. I would
like to thank my friends for always being there for me and
picking me up when I am down. Last I would like to thank
the faculty for giving me the knowledge to be the best nurse
I can be.
Love, Holly
THANK YOU
…Elias and Isadora, for reminding me what's important in life, and being awesome kids. I
love you!
….Jessica and Jillian, for all your love and support, and for being the best sisters a girl could
ask for.
….Sarah, for being my sanity sister and a great friend.
….Jack, for encouraging me and being a wonderful man.
….Mom, for your continual nurturing, love and wisdom throughout my life. You inspire me!
This journey would not have possible without the help of many friends, family, teachers and
coworkers. I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of you who have made it possible
for me to become a nurse!!!
Clay
I would like to sincerely thank My husband Sam and my boys, Lukas and
Finn, for putting up with the stressful times during these last two years,
especially around exams. Thank you Sam for being so supportive through
this, you are my rock.
My friends and family, near and far that have helped me get through the
emotional moments of frustration and times I thought I couldn't get through
this. Special thanks to Annie and Annie, my dearest of old friends and both
nurses who have kept my head up and offered encouragement.
My parents, and brother and sister-in-law who have been very supportive
and helpful. I would like to express a huge thank you to my mom,
Suzanne. Without your help with the kids, I would not have been able to go
back to school. Thanks for all of the pick ups and drop offs, making dinners,
and rearranging your schedule without much notice... You have worked so
hard and have done so much extra to get me through school. I cannot thank
you enough. I love you.
-Emily
I am very happy and blessed to be a graduating member of the first SMCC
Midcoast Nursing class. I would not have made it if it were not for some
very special people in my life who gave me the strength and encouragement
to carry on when I needed it. I have the most supportive and loving husband
a girl could ever have - Dale, you have been there for me in every way for
such a long time and you truly are my other half. My mom, Joan, you have
given me the encouragement to hang in there so many times throughout the
years and I want you to know that you made it all easier to bear. To my
children - Tyson, Kevin, Courtney and Gabriel: You are my greatest
achievement in this life and you have helped me get through school in so
many ways. To my family, friends, co-workers & teachers: I cannot name
you all here but your words of encouragement, thoughts and prayers have
lifted me up when I didn't think this would all work out. God was always
with me but I was not always so strong so He gave me you.
With love to you all,
Lisa
To my dearest family & friends:
I cannot think of where to start, but know what I say comes from my heart
This journey to become a nurse, takes us on to my next verse
Without your help and strong support, this adventure would have been cut short
I extend to you all my deepest gratitude, for your kindness and supportive attitudes
You may have questioned my stability, and possibly thought I should be in a facility
But because of your continuous backing, I am able to send nursing school packing!
Apologies for my novice rhymes, but you know how I can be at times…
I rhyme for you to hide my tears, and thank you for your generous cheers
I love you all I hope you know, you’ve helped me here, and helped me grow.
all of my love,
Cynthia
ALL YOU DID
By Kay Ryan
There doesn’t seem
to be a crack. A
higher pin cannot
be set. Nor can
you go back. You
hadn’t even known
the face was vertical.
All you did was
walk into a room.
The tipping up
from flat was
gradual, you
must assume.
I want to thank my family and my husband’s family for
helping out with the kids and everything else you helped
with but most of all I thank my husband and my children for
putting up with me and for being put on the “back burner”
while I pursued my career. I couldn’t have done any of this
without all your help. I appreciate you all and love you all!!
-Dyani
“The dream begins with a teacher
who believes in you, who tugs and
pushes and leads you to the next
plateau, sometimes poking you
with a sharp stick called ‘truth'.”
-Dan Rather (b. 1931), American TV journalist
Elizabeth and Carla-
We simply couldn’t have done
it without you…
Southern Maine Community College MidCoast Campus
SMCC Nursing Club
Dean James Whitten-for all of his support
Lori Hall- for her smiling face and patience
Shaw’s Supermarket- food donation
Linda Gelinas- the cake
Last but not least- the IT guys who bailed us out of technical disaster.

  • 14. I would like to sincerely thank My husband Sam and my boys, Lukas and Finn, for putting up with the stressful times during these last two years, especially around exams. Thank you Sam for being so supportive through this, you are my rock. My friends and family, near and far that have helped me get through the emotional moments of frustration and times I thought I couldn't get through this. Special thanks to Annie and Annie, my dearest of old friends and both nurses who have kept my head up and offered encouragement. My parents, and brother and sister-in-law who have been very supportive and helpful. I would like to express a huge thank you to my mom, Suzanne. Without your help with the kids, I would not have been able to go back to school. Thanks for all of the pick ups and drop offs, making dinners, and rearranging your schedule without much notice... You have worked so hard and have done so much extra to get me through school. I cannot thank you enough. I love you. -Emily
  • 15. I am very happy and blessed to be a graduating member of the first SMCC Midcoast Nursing class. I would not have made it if it were not for some very special people in my life who gave me the strength and encouragement to carry on when I needed it. I have the most supportive and loving husband a girl could ever have - Dale, you have been there for me in every way for such a long time and you truly are my other half. My mom, Joan, you have given me the encouragement to hang in there so many times throughout the years and I want you to know that you made it all easier to bear. To my children - Tyson, Kevin, Courtney and Gabriel: You are my greatest achievement in this life and you have helped me get through school in so many ways. To my family, friends, co-workers & teachers: I cannot name you all here but your words of encouragement, thoughts and prayers have lifted me up when I didn't think this would all work out. God was always with me but I was not always so strong so He gave me you. With love to you all, Lisa
  • 16. To my dearest family & friends: I cannot think of where to start, but know what I say comes from my heart This journey to become a nurse, takes us on to my next verse Without your help and strong support, this adventure would have been cut short I extend to you all my deepest gratitude, for your kindness and supportive attitudes You may have questioned my stability, and possibly thought I should be in a facility But because of your continuous backing, I am able to send nursing school packing! Apologies for my novice rhymes, but you know how I can be at times… I rhyme for you to hide my tears, and thank you for your generous cheers I love you all I hope you know, you’ve helped me here, and helped me grow. all of my love, Cynthia
  • 17. ALL YOU DID By Kay Ryan There doesn’t seem to be a crack. A higher pin cannot be set. Nor can you go back. You hadn’t even known the face was vertical. All you did was walk into a room. The tipping up from flat was gradual, you must assume.
  • 18. I want to thank my family and my husband’s family for helping out with the kids and everything else you helped with but most of all I thank my husband and my children for putting up with me and for being put on the “back burner” while I pursued my career. I couldn’t have done any of this without all your help. I appreciate you all and love you all!! -Dyani
