Ceramic glazing involves applying a glossy coating to ceramics for decoration, protection, and waterproofing. The color of glaze before firing may differ from its color after firing. To prevent sticking, the base of ceramic objects must be left unglazed. Glazes contain toxic materials before firing that can be dangerous if breathed in, so proper safety precautions like wearing aprons and cleaning up spills and equipment are necessary when glazing ceramics. Once glazed, ceramics require a second firing in the kiln to melt and fuse the glaze onto the clay body in a bisque firing.
