Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Overview of Biblical basis of Great Commission. Discuss importance of definitions i.e. ethne = people groups, not political countries and what this PPT means by reached and unreached <2% evangelical Christian and <5% Christian adherent.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 If we are to make disciples of all the nations, how is the Church doing after 2000 years?
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 To start with, need to have the overall picture of how many total ethnic people groups there are. Like building a puzzle and making the outline first. Ask for audience input / guesses before showing the final answer. Stress that all numbers are not in concrete and can vary by 5-10% given better research and further field input. But these #s are the best we have at the moment.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Explain unreached criteria. Again importance of definitions. Other criteria could be applied yielding different results. Ask for audience input / guesses before showing the final answer.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Explain columns. First is name of country, second is the number that are considered unreached (below 2%).
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 The Biblical mandate is to “make disciples of all the nations”; since we don’t know who will be saved, the Church ought to strive to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth … to every person. Ask if this is a realistic goal … to do something for every person on earth? Can anyone think of other examples of this?
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Secular example of an organization / company seeking to do something to everyone on earth. Their motivation is financial. The Church has the greater motivation of the glory of God and eternity. Question: If you were Coca Cola, and your goal is “to put a can of coke in the hand of every person on the planet,” how much effort would you put into the 25% who have never tasted Coke?
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Some photos showing examples of how Coca-Cola is being taken to the ends of the earth … on a delivery truck in the Arabian desert, on the back of an elephant in Asia, on an animal drawn cart in Southeast Asia.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Picture the world as Coke drinkers. Go through each category: Green 10% = Coke lovers, only drink Coke (true followers of Christ) Blue 20% = Cola drinkers, Pepsi, RC, Sam’s Choice will do, not particular about the “brand” of Cola (nominal adherents to Christianity – might only go to church 2x per year Christmas and Easter etc.) Yellow 40% = Non-Cola drinkers, prefer Sprite, 7-Up or Mountain Dew, do not want Coke (those who have heard the Gospel but not yet responded) Red 30% = Coke? What is that? (those who have never heard) Ask for audience input on ways to get the Gospel to the ends of the earth … to every person. After gathering input say you are going to look at three of those methods – Scripture, Jesus Film, and Christian Radio.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Bible Translation – explain graph, point out the sudden acceleration in the number of translations around 1700-1800. Ask for audience input on why. Usually get the answers: Printing press or Reformation, but another answer is the beginning of the modern missions movement starting with William Carey. With the explosion of missionaries being sent out, there came a corresponding massive increase in Scripture translation. Share statistics at the bottom.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 If you were on the program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and were asked “What movie has been seen by more people than any other?” what would you answer? If you were asked “What movie has been translated into more languages than any other what would you answer? Correct answer to both is the Jesus Film . Over 6 billion viewers and in over 900 languages. Most watched and most translated film in history. Clarify difference between cumulative viewers and unique viewers. Some people have seen the film multiple times and they are counted for each time they have seen the film.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Explain difference between coverage and people actually listening. Assumes that people have a radio and are willing to listen.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Review summary, very general numbers but gives a handle for people to remember.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Ask question Is Christianity stagnant, declining or growing? Get feedback. Ask question “What do you think of the statement you hear in the media that says Islam is growing faster than Christianity? Do you think that is true?
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Very important to explain this slide / graph. Information comes from Operation World. Vertical is annual growth rate, like interest in a bank account. Horizontal is major religions of the world. Go through the percentages. Important to explain that the first green bar is all Christianity. This is a very broad definition of Christianity includes anyone who would call themselves a Christian … “I grew up in America, therefore I guess I am a Christian” … “I go to church therefore I am a Christian” … includes fringe groups like Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses … this is the cola drinkers category in the illustration above … any brand will do. Not necessarily genuine, regenerate followers of Christ. The second and third green bars are subsets of the first green bar. So is Islam growing faster than Christianity? … Yes, if you mean the very broad definition of Christianity … About the same if you mean denominational Christianity … No, if you mean genuine, regenerate followers of Christ (labeled for convenience here as Evangelicals but would include true believers from all stripes and denominations.)
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Explosion of non-western Church. Also called “the Global South.” The four faces along the bottom are the new face of the Church.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Example of growth of the Church in Philippines. Filipinos are often domestic help in other parts of the world particularly in the Middle East. New training efforts are equipping Filipino Christian contract workers to be church planters.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Amazing growth of the Church in China. Go through statistics. Immense need for training of pastors. Give example of II Tim 2:2 and the power of multiplication.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Dramatic growth of global South sending missionaries into the 10/40 Window. Countries that were once receiving missionaries are now becoming key sending nations. Few, if any, known believers in Korea in 1900. Today one of the major missionary sending countries in the world. Chinese Back-to-Jerusalem Movement hopes to eventually send 100,000 Chinese missionaries. Latin American missionaries found to be extremely effective in north Africa and the Middle East, cultural closeness to Latin America.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Shift to Challenges confronting the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Ask for audience input regarding Why hasn’t the Great Commission been fulfilled in the last 2000 years? I move through the pictures one by one asking Why hasn’t this Hausa of Central Africa heard the Gospel? When will this Uygher gentleman of Central Asia hear the Gospel? Why hasn’t this Hindi woman of South Asia not heard of Christ? When will this Hazara man be confronted with the glory of God in Christ? Why only a handful of Tibetan believers? Get audience input regarding why.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Go through five challenges: Spiritual, Population, People Group, National / Political and Church. Discuss how Satan does not give up ground easily.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Population challenge – images are rotating at 5 people per second. To view all the 5.5 billion lost people in the world, you would have to look at 5 people per second without blinking or breaks for 35 years to see all the lost people. Staggering number of lost souls! Interesting related video available at the URL in slide.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Discuss geographic, linguistic and cultural challenges related to people groups. The picture is of a person belonging to the Mustang people in a very remote mountainous area of Nepal. Outsiders only visited their just recently, but found them quite open to the Gospel.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Discuss the political / national challenges with a focus on North Korea and the total spiritual darkness. Ranked as the country most persecuting Christianity. South Korean missionaries have been praying and training for years for opportunities to minister in North Korea. How will these young North Korean children hear the Gospel in a place so barren of truth? Ask the Lord for a breakthrough in this country lead by a tyrant dictator.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Discuss imbalances regarding distribution of missionaries. Not advocating taking people out of existing ministries, but rather encouraging the strategic placement of new missionaries. Have audience turn to the person on their left and right so they have three people in mind (themselves and person on each side). Now tell them you three are responsible to evangelize a million unreached Muslim individuals. That is the approximate ratio of missionaries to unreached Muslim peoples. Have them guess about the answer to the imbalance in finances. Emphasis that this is $1 given to all Christian causes, pastors salaries, church buildings, local rescue missions etc. and that you want the part that goes specifically to pioneer church planting efforts among unreached peoples.
Harvest Information System September 5, 2010 Sum up that the goal of the Great Commission is not just numbers, conversions or checking off people groups from a list, but that God is glorified by worshippers from every tribe, tongue, nation and people. That the worship He deserves is being given to false gods and idols and He is worthy of the worship from all peoples. Moravian missionaries statement when asked why he was going to a destitute, diseased and dangerous area of the world “ to win for the Lamb the reward for His suffering.”
