How to set up a bottle compost column

1. Setting Up Your
Compost
Column
 This lab is an
observation lab that
will be set up and
observed over several
days.

2. Lab Jobs
 Primary Investigator – Make sure you follow the
directions EXACTLY.
 Recorder Reporter – Your group will need to turn in a
lab group work grade sheet for this lab after you are
completely done with the lab. You will also need to
take pictures with your computer and collect data on
the data sheet.
 Safety Inspector/Times – Make sure everyone washes
their hands each day the column is handled. You are
also in charge of doing the temperature readings.
 Materials Manager – You will need to gather supplies
when your group starts and put the column on the
outside table once it is ready. You also will need to
go get the column each day to do observations.

5. Step 3 - NOTE – Please use as little tape as
possible!

6. Step 4 -
NOTE – We will use newspaper for
our browns. These need to be torn
into small pieces. (About this size.)

7. Step 5 -
At this point, the safety inspector/timer will need to take a
temperature reading with your temperature probe. Make sure that
you put the probe all the way down into the greens of your column.
Recorder Reporter – record this temperature on your data sheet
and take a picture of your column with your computer. Save this
picture in your pictures for later use.

8. Step 6 -
NOTE – Only use TWO pieces of tape
to hold the top on!

9.  Materials Manager – Using some blue tape,
label your column with your group’s names
and place it on the table outside the back
door of the building.
 EVERYONE ELSE WILL NEED TO CLEAN UP!!!
