David encounters Saul alone in a cave and has the opportunity to kill him but refuses. David cuts off a piece of Saul's robe as proof but spares his life out of respect for Saul as the Lord's anointed. David appeals to Saul that he had chance to kill him but did not and leaves judgment of their conflict to God, vowing not to harm Saul himself.
