- Welcome to “setting up your access”. In this presentation you will learn your user name and set up your password to access the resources on the school’s network. You will also learn to access your email from anywhere.
- You can do a lot with your new access. You will have a digital locker with 50 mb of storage. It’s a place to keep a file. You also will have your own email account you can use at school or home.
- A digital locker is basically drive space on a server that only you can get to. Other students will not be able to get to your digital locker. Your teachers might refer to it as “your h: drive”. Just like the hard drive on a computer, you can save your files (or projects) to it. The best part is you can login to any computer in the school district. (Enterprise, Hanford, Wiley, any) You cannot access your digital locker from home. You can use a thumb drive to move files or use your email to send a file as an attachment.
- Your education is in some ways a team effort. It takes you (of course), parents, teachers, principals, staff and classmates to help you. The reason you have been given a school district account is to make it easier to communicate with your teachers, staff, and principals to get that support. Also, to makes it easier for teachers, staff, and principals to communicate with you. In addition, you can collaborate and communicate with classmates in order for you all to learn better together. You can access your email from home or any computer connected to the Internet. We will discuss this later on.
- The first time you log in is different than the other times you will log in. You will set up a new password. Once you do this then you will be able to access your digital locker and email. Step one: In the user name type your first name followed by a “dot” and then you last name. If either name is longer than nine letters only type in the first nine letters. In the example the first name is less than nine letters and the last name is less than nine letters. Note. If you have a common name these steps may not work. If you are not able to login after this presentation please see your teacher so they can look-up your user name.
- Now enter your temporary password. Your temporary password is your student ID number followed by a capital “a” and a lower-case “z” and the “at” sign. Be sure you type this correctly.
- This should be already filled in, but just in case it is changed (or you changed it), please double-check that “Log on to” has RSD typed in to the box. Now click OK. You will be informed that you are required to change your password. Click OK.If access is denied re-type your user name and password again very carefully at least two more times before you contact your teacher. You may have a common name (which your teacher will look-up) OR you may have the wrong student id number.
- You are now required to change your password to a permanent password. Your old password will be filled in the first time you try to set your permanent password. If for some reason your proposed permanent password is denied you will need to re-enter your temporary password. Remember your temporary password is your student ID number followed by a capital “a” and a lower-case “z” and the “at” sign.
- Now is the time to enter a new permanent password. Your password must be eight to twelve letters long. It must have a capital letter, a number, and a character. (like the “at” sign, dollar sign, or “and” sign) The best way to do this is to write out a word and add a capital, a number, and substitute a letter with a character. For example, the word “password”. I can add a capital “P”, change the “a” to the “at” sign, and change the “o” to a zero. It is important that you write it down. Do not depend on your memory. The number one reason a student is unable to login is that they type in the wrong password. It is not the computers fault you typed in the wrong password.
- Remember that you must type the new password two times exactly the same. Click OK. If your password is denied you must choose another one. Remember to write it down!
- To access your email from anywhere open webmail.rsd.edu. You do not need to type “http://”. The computer will do that for you. Check “Use Outlook Web Access Light” the first few times you use the email. The is an easier version of the email. This is especially important if you have never used web based email. Click “log on”.
- Now you are logged in. Take some time to explore the email. Check out your contacts and calendars. If you are emailing a teacher or student in the school district you only need to enter their name (first & last) in “to”. If you want to email anyone outside the district (or your other email address) you must type the entire email address like michael1928@gmail.com). If a friend wants to send you an email and is not in the school district, they must use your entire email address. Your email address is your user name (first “dot” last name) @students.rsd.edu. Notice the “s” in “students”. If it is not there the email will bounce!
- If you have problems accessing your email or digital locker at school contact the help desk at 6125. Your teacher should help you do that. Do not call the help desk for access problems at home.
