MITCHI ANN V. SARMIENTO
9- LEILANI
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. The son of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden,
he was probably educated at the King Edward IV Grammar School in Stratford, where he learned Latin and a little Greek
and read the Roman dramatists. At eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway,a woman seven or eight years his senior.
Together they raised two daughters: Susanna, who was born in 1583, and Judith (whose twin brother died in boyhood),
born in 1585.
Little is known about Shakespeare’s activities between 1585 and 1592. Robert Greene’s A Groatsworth of Wit alludes to
him as an actor and playwright. Shakespeare may have taught at school during this period, but it seems more probable that
shortly after 1585 he went to London to begin his apprenticeship as an actor. Due to the plague, the London theaters were
often closed between June 1592 and April 1594. During that period, Shakespeare probably had some income from his
patron, Henry Wriothesley, earl of Southampton, to whom he dedicated his first two poems, Venus and Adonis (1593) and
The Rape of Lucrece (1594). The fomer was a long narrative poem depicting the rejection of Venus by Adonis, his death,
and the consequent disappearance of beauty from the world. Despite conservative objections to the poem’s glorification of
sensuality, it was immensely popular and was reprinted six times during the nine years following its publication.
In 1594, Shakespeare joined the Lord Chamberlain’s company of actors, the most popular of the companies acting at
Court. In 1599 Shakespeare joined a group of Chamberlain’s Men that would form a syndicate to build and operate a new
playhouse: the Globe, which became the most famous theater of its time. With his share of the income from the Globe,
Shakespeare was able to purchase New Place, his home in Stratford.
While Shakespeare was regarded as the foremost dramatist of his time, evidence indicates that both he and his
contemporaries looked to poetry, not playwriting, for enduring fame. Shakespeare’s sonnets were composed between
1593 and 1601, though not published until 1609. That edition, The Sonnetsof Shakespeare, consists of 154 sonnets, all
written in the form of three quatrains and a couplet that is now recognized as Shakespearean. The sonnets fall into two
groups: sonnets 1-126, addressed to a beloved friend, a handsome and noble young man, and sonnets 127-152, to a
malignant but fascinating “Dark Lady," whom the poet loves in spite of himself. Nearly all of Shakespeare’s sonnets
examine the inevitable decay of time, and the immortalization of beauty and love in poetry.
In his poems and plays, Shakespeare invented thousands of words, often combining or contorting Latin, French, and
native roots. His impressive expansion of the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, includes such
words as: arch-villain, birthplace, bloodsucking, courtship, dewdrop, downstairs, fanged, heartsore, hunchbacked,
leapfrog, misquote, pageantry, radiance, schoolboy, stillborn, watchdog, and zany.
Shakespeare wrote more than thirty plays. These are usually divided into four categories: histories, comedies, tragedies,
and romances. His earliest plays were primarily comedies and histories such as Henry VI and The Comedy of Errors, but
in 1596, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, his second tragedy, and over the next dozen years he would return to the
form, writing the plays for which he is now best known: Julius Caesar,Hamlet,Othello,King Lear,Macbeth, and Antony
and Cleopatra. In his final years,Shakespeare turned to the romantic with Cymbeline,A Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest.
Only eighteen of Shakespeare’s plays were published separately in quarto editions during his lifetime; a complete
collection of his works did not appear until the publication of the First Folio in 1623, severalyears after his death.
Nonetheless, his contemporaries recognized Shakespeare’s achievements. Francis Meres cited “honey-tongued”
Shakespeare for his plays and poems in 1598, and the Chamberlain’s Men rose to become the leading dramatic company
in London, installed as members of the royal household in 1603.
Sometime after 1612, Shakespeare retired from the stage and returned to his home in Stratford. He drew up his will in
January of 1616, which included his famous bequest to his wife of his “second best bed.” He died on April 23, 1616, and
was buried two days later at Stratford Church.
SEVEN AGES OF MAN
BY: WILLIAM SHAKESPEAR
ALL the world ’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His Acts being seven ages. At first the Infant, 5
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
Then the whining School-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the Lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woful ballad 10
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a Soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard;
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the Justice,15
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances,—
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered Pantaloon, 20
With spectacles on nose, and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, 25
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness, and mere oblivion,—
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
Laws and Regulations
In Thailand , the Food Act of B.E.2522 (1979) is the major law aimed at protecting and preventing
consumers from health hazards occurring from food consumption. According to the Food Act, the
Ministry of Public Health is designated to be in charge of the execution of this act. The act also
empowered the Ministry of Public Health to promulgate ministerial regulations, to appoint the Food
Committee and competent officers, and to set up other activities in order to carry out the provisions of
the Act.
The ministerial regulations describe the procedures for applications for manufacturing licences,
importation licences, and registration including the rates of fees, the identification card of the
competent officers and the labeling of food products for exports.
The Food Committee functions as an advisory board to the Minister or the competent officers on the
matters related food control administration. There are 23 members on the committee: 12 of them being
ex officio members appointed from relevant government agencies, the other nine being food experts
(no more than four of whom being representatives of the food industry) and appointed every two years.
The Food Act classifies foods into three main categories as follows:
(1) SpeciallyControlledFoods – Registrations are required for foods in this category. Legal
provisions are related to food standard quality, specifications, packaging, and labeling requirements, as
well as other aspects of good manufacturing practices. The Food Committee may make
recommendations to the Minister of Public Health specifying specially controlledfoods.
(2) Standardized Foods – Standard foods do not require registration but their quality and labeling
have to meet the standard requirements as specified in the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health.
(3) Other Foods – Foods, raw or cooked, preserved or non-preserved, processed or non-processed, if
not listed under category 1 or 2 (see the list in the annex) will be considered as general foods. Although
registrations are not required, general food products are controlledand monitored with regard to
hygiene, safety, labeling and advertisement. Foods in this category may be subdivided into (a) foods
that must bear standard labels and (b) other general foods.
The control measures for each category of foods differ; specially controlledfoods are strictly
controlled. Before producing or importing such foods, the application for product registration is
required. For standard foods, the application for such permission is not required, but they must be
produced up to the prescribed quality or standard. For labeled foods, however, the main objective is to
control the labeling in order to do away with misleading or cheating of consumers; thus, there will be
fewer problems of quality standard, compared with foods in other categories.
For food control efforts in Thailand , assigned personnel of the Food Control Division, the Food and
Drug Ports Division and Provincial Public Health Offices are the competent officers who function
under the Food Act.
-bloody or rust-colored sputum
-hoarseness
-swelling of the neck and face
-pain and weakness in the shoulder arm, or hand
-unexplained fever.
Chronic Bonchitis:
This is a long-term inflamation of the bronchi (large airways), while symptoms include coughing for long
periods of time. Just like emphysema, there is no cure for this disease, but treatments include inhalers, or
inhaled steroids. Sometimes, surgery is a necessity. It is proven that smoking and second hand smoke is the
main cause.
SYMPTOMS
-coughing for long periods of time (may include mucus)
-low fever
-tiredness
1. Ways of detecting and preventing diseases ofthe Respiratory and Circulatory System .
How to Prevent Respiratory Disease
1) Stop Smoking
You should know by now that smoking can be a major cause of respiratory disease. If you quit smoking
now, you’re obviously going to save your body a lot of trouble including your friends and family
members who get exposed to your second-hand smoke. Those who suffer from passive smoking have
also suffered from respiratory diseases, so you need to be careful. Find out the ‘health effects of passive
smoking’ and ‘how to quit smoking’ by visiting the links.
1) Get Plenty of Rest
Similarly how a person should get plenty of rest when suffering from a cold or flu, a person who is
likely to suffer from respiratory disease should also get lots of rest. This can help your immune system
battle against any bacteria or diseases in your body, preventing respiratory disease.
2) Avoid Stress
Avoiding stress can significantly improve your overall health. Too many concerns and worries can
jeopardize your health can cause several health problems such as stroke, angina and possibly even ruin
your heart health.
Dieting can Help Respiratory Diseases
A well based diet combining several health nutrients can help improve body functions and the
respiratory system. If you’re hoping to start dieting, include foods that contain high levels of protein.
Foods containing protein include:
• Lean meats • Turkey• Fish• Soy• Eggs• Low-fat dairy products• Sprouts• Skinless chicken
• Whole grains• Fruits and vegetables
Eating unhealthy levels of fat and also increase health problems. Fats such as saturated fat, omega-6 fatty
acids and Trans fats shouldn’t be taken as much as monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids.
How to Prevent Circulatory System Diseases
There are many circulatory system diseases which can be fatal. Some of them are angina, arrhythmia,
atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defect, coronary artery disease, hypertension,
hypercholesterolemia and peripheral vascular disease. Circulatory system disease prevention will help you
to stay away from the circulatory system diseases. To help you with this, following are some of the
preventive measures.
✜ Exercise: Exercise and workouts are the best way to keep your body healthy. Routine workouts generate
a proper blood flow in the body which reduces the chances of getting circulatory system diseases. They also
increase the oxygen level in the body which is the primary need of the body. You can opt for jogging,
cycling, swimming or any other sports which can keep your body working.
✜ Quit Smoking: Smoking is the cause of a number of diseases among which circulatory system diseases
are the most common ones. If you are already suffering from circulatory system diseases, then smoking may
even cause death. Hence, it is best to avoid it completely.
✜ Control Alcohol: It has been observed that small amounts of alcohol specifically red wine can improve
the blood circulation. But excess consumption of alcohol may take you to many health complications.
Hence, it is very necessary to keep an eye on your alcohol consumption.
✜ Stay Away from Stress: In our busy routine, we forget about our health and take a lot of mental and
physical stress. Any type of stress can lead to a number of circulatory diseases. Meditation has proved to be
one of the best ways to get rid of the problems of stress.
✜ Take Proper Rest: Your body needs proper rest after a day's long work hence try to get at least 7 hours
sleep, in every 24 hours. It will remove toxins from your body and will maintain proper blood flow. Avoid
sleeping extra as it will result in poor blood circulation in your body.
✜ Foods to be Avoided: Just by taking care of the food habits you can easily protect yourself from
circulatory system diseases. Avoid eating foods which have saturated fats like butter, dairy products, etc. Fat
and cholesterol get deposited in the arteries and cause blockages in the proper circulation of blood. Avoid
eating junk food items. Reduce the oil consumption and use only refined oils.
✜ What to Eat: Fresh vegetables and fruits will improve the blood circulation of your body. Fat is one of the
necessities of the body hence you cannot avoid it completely. You can have mono-unsaturated fat which
you can get from nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, omega 3 fatty acids, corn oil, soy oil, etc. You can have
lean meat and lean dairy products. Fish can be very healthy for the prevention of circulatory diseases.
Carbohydrates and fibers should be included in the diet.
✜ Lose Weight: People with excess weight are more susceptible to cardiovascular diseases. Hence, it is
very important to shed excess weight with the help of various weight reducing activities and a suitable diet.
Consult a physician for more details.
✜ Other Diseases: If you are suffering from other diseases such as diabetes then you need to be more
careful. Keep an eye on the sugar levels and try to maintain it so as to avoid any type of circulatory system
diseases.
