There is no shortage of advice on the Internet about what to do if your
cell phone gets wet. The problem is that most of it comes from those
who have very little knowledge or experience in dealing with wet cell
phones. Advice ranges from sucking out the water with a vacuum
cleaner or putting the cell phone in rice to using a hair dryer or baking it
in the oven or even the microwave! Anyone whose cell phone functions (even if only briefly)
after a water incident believes that whatever he or she did was the reason for recovery. In
medicine, this is called the placebo effect. In reality, a small number of cell phones will work
again spontaneously when dry after exposure to liquids but it depends on a large number of
factors such as the type of liquid, the extent and duration of the exposure as well as the
microscopic distribution of the particles that remain on the cell phone’s components. How the
device is handled after the incident is the only factor under your control and it is worthwhile
getting professional advice before applying a folk remedy that may reduce or destroy any
chances you have of recovering your phone and its data. As a company based in Hawaii, we
know a lot about liquid damage and we see many examples of it every single day. This
article is written for those who wish to understand the problem and make informed decisions about what to do.

Give Cell Phone a Different Life
First, it is important to review the actual effects of liquid damage on an electronic device. When your cell phone gets wet, abnormal
current pathways are created ("short circuits") that can allow too much current to pass through individual components. Such
damage can continue to occur as long as electrical current is applied. The intensity of the problem is in large part related to the
composition of the offending liquid. Totally pure water is not conductive and not a problem but also does not exist in nature since
some impurities are always present, even in distilled water. Tap water, depending on the impurities it contains, is 1000 to 10,000
times more conductive than distilled water and salt water is 1,000,000 times more conductive! All liquids have their own individual
conductive properties. The more conductive the liquid, the more likely it is to generate abnormal current pathways. A second and
perhaps even more important source of ongoing damage occurs after the incident, caused by the drying process itself. Since only
pure water evaporates, it leaves behind ALL of the impurities that were present in the liquid. These adhere to, and corrode your
device’s components! These are much like the spots that show up on your car the day after it rains. Thus, both types of damage
occur due to the impurities in the liquid.
The next important concept is that cell phones are made up of many components but only one constitutes “your phone” and
usually cannot be economically replaced - the “mainboard”. It is typically very difficult and not cost effective to locate and replace
individual components on your mainboard, so when any are significantly damaged, your phone is “totaled” and needs to be
replaced. Fortunately, with liquid exposure, the mainboard is only infrequently damaged by the initial current surge and more
frequently by charging the device and by the corrosive particles left behind after drying.
The Unavoidable Conclusion
If you have understood these explanations you now realize that drying out your phone, irrespective of the means you use to do it,
cannot address the main source of the problem – the solid corrosive materials that entered your phone dissolved in the liquid and
that remain there after the water evaporates. This means that you must make a very important decision.
