1. How Does Your Media Product
Represent Particular Social
Groups?
By MOHAMED RADWAN
2. Gender
Males
In my final production, the main character is a male. The male isn’t typical of most Hollywood style
main characters. Our films portrays males differently to how they are usually portrayed in
Hollywood style media. Our character is not particularly good looking nor do they represent a
‘perfect’ body image. The male is also reflected as scared, not exactly the fearless hero that would
be found in real Hollywood style productions, however the minor male characters in the opening
montage do reflect masculinity through their general mannerisms e.g. the struts they employ.
Females
Whilst females in our production are represented dancing in a way that could be considered
‘suggestive’ I do not believe our production objectifies women . The dance images are used as a
means of expression of ideas that will appeal to our target audience i.e. the discovery of sexuality
as well as music. Our films more serious mise-en-scene, established via lighting, music and of
course content also encourages a more sophisticated way of thinking about the media presented
and therefore hopefully helps our audience not look at the images of ‘suggestive’ women and
develop a more mature response to these images as well as take in the more grown up ideas they
represent.
My production aims to give a balanced, unprejudiced representation of both genders.
3. Ethnicity and Culture
All the actors used in our final production are of ethnic-minorities.
White people are underrepresented in our production however there
is no systematic reason for this. The best actors for the job were
chosen and none of them turned out to be white.
Ethnic minorities are also represented as westernised and well adapted
to British life and therefore reflecting an image and message of
social integration. They are socialising in a typical western style, via
clubbing. The dance moves they employ are also that of western
culture. Also, all clothing used is western clothing.
The wide array of ethnicity in our film and the use of a club as a setting
also sends out a message about the demographics of British cities.
Clubs are often found in cities and for this club to be full of ethnic
minorities reflects the change in the ethnic landscape of British
metropolitan areas.
4. Teenagers
Teenagers in my film are rather conventionally
represented as fun loving and full of energy during the
clubbing scenes. The hip-hop style of dance used also
reflects the change in youth popular culture in recent
times. Also, during market research, we discovered
this was our audiences favourite genre of music and
therefore included it in our production.
Teenagers, through the inclusion of alcohol, are also
shown to be more aware and exposed to more ‘adult’
issues in our production. Reflective of the lives of the
teenagers in our target audience.
5. Sexual Orientation and Religion
The use of suggestive images also represents
teenagers as more sexually aware in our
production. No references are made to sexuality.
No references are made to religion or religious
individuals in our film. The use of alcohol, drugs
and suggestive dancing also serves to suggest the
lack of influence religion has on our film, its
characters and this is probably reflective of our
audience who in our primary research appeared to
be more liberal in their preferences.
