Mendeley consists of 4 vital components:
Now we will watch the short video about What is Mendeley
Before we begin our session. I would ask everyone of you to fill in the pre-training survey form.
I would like to introduce a little bit history of Mendeley
Mendeley founded in November 2007 by three German PhD students and is based in London.
The first public beta version was released in August 2008.
The team comprises researchers, graduates, and developers from a variety of academic institutions.
The company’s investors include the former executive chairman of Last.fm, the former founding engineers of Skype, and the former Head of Digital Strategy at Warner Music Group, as well as academics from Cambridge andJohns Hopkins University.
Mendeley has won several awards in 2009 and The Guardian ranked it #6 in "Top 100 tech media companies"
Mendeley works on all major platforms (including iOS so you can work on the go) and with all major browsers.
“Let’s talk about how you can get started with Mendeley, and how you can import your files and references into Mendeley.”
‘If you go to Mendeley.com and click ‘Create Account’, you will be prompted to download Mendeley Desktop, which is the offline library in which you manage your articles.
Your articles will also be synced to your online account, which makes it easy to access them from anywhere. Once you have installed Mendeley, you can begin to build your library.”
“This is what your Desktop Library looks like. In the center you see a list of any articles you have imported into Mendeley.”
“Mendeley makes it easy to add documents. You have a variety of options. The easiest way is to drag and drop a file right into Mendeley. You can also click ‘Add Files’ to add a specific article to your library, or add an entire folder at once. If you choose to watch a folder, Mendeley will automatically import any articles you add to that folder in the future. Mendeley will extract meta data for you and search databases to fill in any gaps.”
“If you’re already using a reference manager like EndNote, Zotero or RefWorks, you can import your entire library into Mendeley so you don’t have to worry about losing your existing references. Other ways to import files include using the Web Importer, and finding articles in Mendeley’s own Research Catalog.”
*DEMO? Exit .ppt and show your group how to import some files. Be sure to have files prepared that are relevant to your group, that are not already in your library, and that import with a lot of details, to showcase this feature.
“When you add documents to your library, they aren’t always imported with 100% of the data, but this is easy to fix. Mendeley will find information based on the DOI, PubMed, or ArXiv ID, and you can add further data by telling Mendeley to search Google Scholar. At any time, you can edit fields manually as well.

The Web Importer works like a bookmark, only when you click to bookmark an article, it’s saved to your Mendeley Library instead. To install the Web Importer, go to mendely.com/import (also linked from Mendeley’s home page), and simply drag the ‘Save to Mendeley’ button to the bookmark. Done!
“Whenever you come across an interesting article, or when you do a search on Google Scholar or other sites, you can click ‘Save to Mendeley’ to make a window pop up. In this window, save any references you want to keep in one click. Mendeley will also save the PDF to your library if it’s available.”
*DEMO OPPORTUNITY
“Unlike many other reference managers, Mendeley syncs your library between devices, and online. That means that Mendeley Desktop and Mendeley Web update each other, so that you always have access to the most recent versions of your articles and notes, even if you’re not on your own computer. Your library is always secure and not visible to anyone else, but syncing does allow Mendeley to analyze your library anonymously, and to make customized suggestions for you on request. This way you can discover other research in your field and see which articles are the most popular right now.”
*DEMO OPPORTUNITY
“Let’s talk about how you can manage the articles in your library.”
Mendeley Desktop’s Files organizer
Keep a copy of your Mendeley library with organized file name structure and folder structure you set up.
In Mendeley Desktop you can:
Create Folders to organize your work
Mark papers read or unread
Open attached pdfs and other documents
Star favorites
View type of doc attached
Open PDF files in the Mendeley viewer so you can add notes and highlight text.
“Locate documents easily by using the search field in the top right. You can filter your results by author, title, etc. You can also find articles by filtering the list on the left. For example, you can see all works by a single author, or all articles related to “protein” or any other tag you choose to make.”
“In the full text viewer, you can search through your text by keyword.”
You can also highlight your text or annotate the article by adding sticky notes.
“If you select a word or piece of text and click ‘Define’, Mendeley will retrieve definitions and explanations from Wikipedia.”
“Mendeley’s Citation Plug-in helps you cite references as you’re writing new research. No more tedious hours spent checking style guides and manually writing your bibliographies. Mendeley does it all for you.”
“Installing the Citation Plug-in takes only a single step. In Mendeley Desktop, click ‘Install MS Word Plugin’, and Mendeley will do the rest. Now open your Word processor and you’ll see the Mendeley toolbar.”
“When you’re ready to add a citation to your paragraph, click ‘Insert of Edit Citation’. A new window will pop up. Type in the name of the author, title or year, and Mendeley will show you a list of matches. Select the text you want, and click ‘OK’ to add the citation in Word.
“When you’re done writing and ready to add a bibliography, click ‘Insert Bibliography’ in the Mendeley Toolbar. Mendeley will then generate your bibliography for you. You can specify the appropriate citation style for your field in the drop down menu. If you’ve already written your article and suddenly need to submit it to a journal that uses a different format, you can change your entire bibliography and all of your references in one second by picking a different style from the menu.
Mendeley lets you:
Discover new research
Get recommendations
See the impact of articles on the research community.
“You can find new research by searching the Mendeley research catalog, which is generated by the citations that are synced to the cloud and then made publically searchable. There are over 200+ Million documents in the database making it the worlds largest open research database. Mendeley organizes research as it is added to the database- look at the most popular papers, or the latest added. You can also browse by discipline, do keyword searches or advanced searches.”
“You can also search the catalog online or browse by discipline. This article, on “How To Choose a Good Scientific Problem”, has been read by more than 50,000 people on Mendeley.”
When you click on a paper you are taken to this page, where you can:
See a pdf preview of the paper (we work with publishers to make these available, so available for some not all papers)
Add the article with one click to your library, if it is freely available
If the article is not freely available, Mendeley will link to other locations or help you find it in the various databases to which your institution is subscribed
Mendeley will also show you social statistics to help you learn about other people who have used this paper, and Mendeley will suggest related research that might be of interest to you.
“If you would like more recommendations, you can use Mendeley Suggest, an intelligent algorithm that calculates, on the basis of your library, what articles you might be interested in reading. You can access Mendeley Suggest in your Mendeley Desktop, at the top left.”
“What makes Mendeley unique is the ways in which you can collaborate with others and discover new research. Share papers, makes note on the same article, and meet new researchers in your field.”
*DEMO OPPORTUNITY
Mendeley Web is a social network so a great way to start networking is to build your professional research profile. Here you can showcase your research, receive statistics on your publications, and connect with other researchers and colleagues. Think of it as an academic alternative to LinkedIn.
You can connect to people on Mendeley through three different types of groups. There are:
Public open groups- These are searchable on the Mendeley Groups page. Anyone can join and anyone can add citations or make comments in newsfeed. Instead of joining the group you can also follow it, which allows you to access the group’s references from your Mendeley Library.
Invitation-only Public Groups. These are similarly searchable on Mendeley.com, but you can only join by requesting permission from the owner.
3. Private groups, these are just that-private. They are not searchable on Mendeley Groups page, no one on the network knows they exist or who is in them. The owner must invite people to join, and members must accept to join the group. These groups are perfect for collaboration, because you can share full text documents and collaborate on research, for example annotating articles. There are limited numbers of these groups, and there is a limit to the number of members you can create.
In a private group in Mendeley Desktop you can:
View full text papers
Collaboratively annotate and highlight documents
Collaboratively write papers using Mendeley’s citation plugin
After you’ve added work, sync your Mendeley library to make your changes available to other group members
*DEMO OPPORTUNITY
On Mendeley Web you can:
Search the groups page for public groups that interest you
Create and manage your groups online
You can also browse popular groups by discipline, allowing you to discover new groups you might not have come across before.
