18. Christmas
The celebration of Christmas. On December 25th and January 6th we celebrate two world saving
events. The birth and the Baptism of our Lord. Until the mid 4th century the two feasts were
celebrated together on January 6 under the name Epiphany (revelation of God). Later it was set
that Christmas would be celebrated separately on December 25. That day was dedicated by the
nationals to the God Sun, and it was appropriate for the celebration of Christ, the Sun of Justice,
which offered the spiritual light to people. Christmas is the second, after the Easter, most
important feast of Christendom. The fact of incarnation of the Speech we confess our belief to
the Symbol of Faith ‘For us and for our salvation he come down from heaven’.
The Christmas's Customs: The preparations for Christmas used to start several days before. The
housewives cleaned and wiped off every corner of the house. Men were taking care to buy all the
required food. The day before Christmas children, in groups, visit the houses of the village and
chant the carols. The word originates from the Latin caleudae = days of January during which
the ancient Romans exchanged wishes, small gifts and sweets. Later on this Roman custom was
incorporated with Christian life and survived until today. In the past when children were
chanting the carols hold an oil gas as well as a tinny box decorated with ribbons, where they
throw whatever the housewives were given them: money, nuts, bagels etc. In some houses the
housewives continue to knead a special sort of bread the ‘Christopsomo’ (Christ's bread). On
Christmas eve all the family (taοfas) would gather around a low round table (sofras) and be
incensed and eat fresh bread. On the table there was wine, fruits, nuts and sweets. In the middle
the incensory. The father (Leader of the family) takes the incensory, goes around the table three
times and chants the relevant hymn for this feast or expresses the wish ‘All hail Christ’ and
eulogizes everything on the table. Then the mother takes the incensory and incenses the chicken
and the animals in the stable. The father takes the knife and outlines the Cross three times and
slices the bread, first one slice for Christ, one for Virgin Mary, one for the house and then one
for each member of the family, starting from the older reaching the younger. They have hidden
in the Christopsomo (Christ's Bread) they a gold coin (florin). The person that found the florin,
put it in a glass of wine, made the sign of the cross and said: ‘As this glass is full, let the house
be full of goods’. They all drunk wine. If the florin was found at the top, they said that it was
Christ who found it. At the end, after they had eaten everything, the children were taking the
candle and the incensory and the incensed the whole house, the stable, the animals and the
agricultural equipment. After the dinner and the incensing they let the table as it was for three
days. The meaning of this custom was that the table would be as rich as it was today. The food
served on Christmas eve was Lenten and consists mainly from rice and leeks (leeks with rice).
There was a custom to slaughter a pig two to three days before Christmas and to offer meat to the
relatives. From the meat they made lard, salt pork, fat, sausages etc. They also made the
traditional sweet of the day, sugar buns. Christmas tree was a branch of pine or holly tree, the
ornaments were all handmade, e.g. nuts covered with foil
etc.
Weihnachten
Das Weihnachtsfest: Am 25. Dezember und am 6. Januar feiern wir zwei weltrettende
Ereignisse, die Geburt und die Taufe Gottes. Bis zur Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts wurden diese
beiden Feiertage am 6. Januar mit dem Namen „Epiphania“ (=Oberfläche - Gottes Offenbarung)
gefeiert.
18
19. Die Weihnachtsbräuche: Die Vorbereitungen für Weihnachten fingen ursprünglich viele Tage
früher an.
Eingesalzenes, Fett, Würste, u.a. her.

Epiphany
The eve of Epiphany (January 5th) the priest visits all the houses of the village and asperses them
so that everything to be blessed under God's protection. The night of the same day all family
gathers around the table for the ‘incensing’. On the table there are Lenten, since the Epiphany's
eve people fast. The night ‘Fotari’ sing. They are the youngsters who visit all the houses of the
village and sing depending on the members of the family, several songs.
In the past people believed that at midnight the heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended.
Whoever saw the dazzle begged god with all his hart to give his whatever he asked. The petition
should be made very fast, because the dazzle did not last long.
On the day of Epiphany (January 6th) after the Mass just before the service of the sanctification
of the water, in the church's court a procession is formed. In the first raw the labarum, the
lantern, cherubim, the chanters and the priest follow. The people follow holding lit candles. In
the torrent there is a marble fountain where there is a carved image of Christ and John the
Baptist. On this spot the very important persons take their place, one beside the other. Then the
priest bows and sanctify with his Cross three times the water of the spring. During the
sanctification the children release three pigeons. Upon termination of the ceremony the priest
offers holy water. People sanctify the houses and the fields with this holy water. Each housewife
fills a bottle and put it in the icon stand. The holy water is useful for the sick and the animals.
21
22. Epiphanias
bekam alles was er verlangte.

The Savor’s Transfiguration
On Thabor mountain Christ was "transfigured" (he changed figure), revealing the glory of his
deity. The „glory" of Christ inexhaustible light. God, regarding his substance does not have any
relation and proportion with the Creation. That is why none among the creature can perceive the
substance of God, which is „inaccessible" and „amethektos". But God bridges this distance with
his inexhaustible energy which gives us the possibility to meet him. If we cannot see God's
substance, we can see God from within his energies, which are ‘methektes’ in a way that his
limitless nature allows him. God's energy is also called: light , glory, kingdom, power, love. The
God's light does not have any relation with the natural light that Christ as God possesses and let
be seen just before the Passion, on Thabor mountain. His deification and his real identity should
be revealed, so that his disciples to draw power, as the short hymn of Transfiguration says. Thus
the ‘hidden mystery since many centuries’ has been revealed. The light of Christ is ‘glory’ and
that of other persons of the Saint Trinity. The view of the inexhaustible light by men is called
‘theoptia’ and it is identified with the ‘theosis’, the union with God. This is the only way to find
out the tradition of our saints.

24. The ‘Read’ Grapes
The ‘read’ grapes is a custom which was practiced in the past. They all waited impatiently for
the grapes to mature, to eat them and get some strength after so many years of exhaustion from
the harvest and threshing. They ate only when the priest ‘read’ them during the transfiguration of
the Savior. It was forbidden for someone to eat them before.
They cultivated in general only black grapes, from which they produced the black brusque wine.
The immature grapes were hurting man's health and that is why they introduced a prevention in
order to be respected by everyone. At last the 6th of August, everyone was expecting came. The
basket full of grapes was finally at home. They put the grapes in a plate and took them to the
Church to be read by the priest. There, after the end of the mass, the priest read them and after
that each family went back home. Every member of the family would eat some grapes before
eating anything else. That was done in order to have a good year.

Three Weeks of Fasting (Virtues Phase) - general
The three weeks of fasting is one of the most spiritual periods of our liturgical life. It's a time of
penitence, recollection and meditation and also time to return to our father, God. It has been thus
called because the hymnographic rules which are included in that have only three odes (groups
of hymns). The three-weeks-of fasting starts from Sunday of Publican and ends on Holy
Saturday. It comprises the following periods: the preparatory weeks, three in total, the Lent (six
weeks of fasting) and the Holy Week (ten weeks in total). The first period of the three weeks of
fasting includes the said Sunday of Publican and Pharisees, the Septuagesima, the Sunday of
Carnival, which is also called the Day of Judgment. It is a training, a preparation i.e., for spiritual
efforts. The second period starts the Sunday of Quinquagesima, comprises the Lent and ends
with the Holy Sunday.
The three weeks of fasting is called for that reason solemn-three -weeks-of-fasting. People today
celebrate these days with dances and disguises, wassailing and carnival festivities as revival of
pagan customs of the antiquity.
Triodion - allgemein
Preparatory weeks (Carnival)
Each holiday offers people the chance to get away from everyday routine, and this is particularly
true for carnival. Holidays offer cheerfulness, thoughtlessness, joyfulness and a chance for high
jinks. The carnival lasts three weeks, the first of the-three-weeks-of-fasting and in the past their
beginning was announced with gunfires.
We call ‘Mardi Gras’ the Thursday of the Carnival, because each house, no matter how poor or
deprived might be, it should ‘roast’ its interior, i.e. cook or roast meat.
27
28. We call All Soul's Day the Saturday of Carnival. Customs for these days was Friday of Boiled
Wheat, pies and other sort of food, their bringing to the Church and their distribution to the
neighbors to obtain forgiveness of their sins.
Shrove Sunday
Shrove Sunday is the day the protoplasts were expelled from paradise and it is therefore the
beginning of the secular life of humankind.
The Shrove Sunday after the disguises and the all-day wassail, each house was spreading a table
with a rich food for the night. Around the table were sitting not only the members of the family
but also the members of the extended family. The married children, accompanied by their own
families were going to their parents houses, where a vivid and joyful family party was taking
place with plenty of food and sweets. There the younger bowed and kissed the hands of the older
and said ‘forgiven’. This custom continues until today and aims at reminding people that
tomorrow the Lent begins and people should clean themselves from evilness, hatred and they
should prepare themselves to enter a period of fasting and purification, as the Church requires.
The grandma was frying eggs and was giving the egg-shells to the younger grandson, who was
mounting on the back of the bigger brother and they were going to the dooryard, were throwing
the egg-shells on the road and said ‘fleas and rats out, happiness and joy in’. Sometimes were
saying ‘fleas to ....’, and they usually said the most rare name in the village.
Finally to offer some fun to the children they played ‘chaskar’. Here is how the play goes.
Grandpa was hanging a piece of solid nut-halva from a line. The children were sitting in a circle,
hands behind the waist. Grandpa turned skillfully the line so that it passed in front of the mouths
of the children, each one of them was trying to catch the halva and it was moving close to their
face, it spoiled them, which caused unrestrained laughs.
Vorbereitende Wochen (Karneval)
Shrove Monday
On Shrove Monday the young girls were dressed with old-fashioned cloths and strolled around
the village's square, they danced and enjoyed themselves. This custom is not in use any longer.
The Cultural Association tries to bring to life this custom. The sweet that was served during this
day was halva-pie. The food they consumed was Lenten, cocked without oil, pickles, onions,
olives and the traditional bread of the day ‘lagana’. The mothers-in-law were making the Lenten
sweet ‘kliki’. They ate it and offered to the neighbors.
In the square of the village men were gathered and they hanged small animals, cats and dogs, in
the plane-tree, they stroke the branches, and then the animals were prancing. The villagers were
laughing with this embarrassing spectacle. This custom stopped being practiced after the World
War II.
Starting from Shrove Monday a three-days austere fasting started and on Wednesday some
people were receiving communion. On Wednesday the following custom was taking place:
Mothers-in-law and brides went the to mass bringing with them baskets with fruits and sesame-pies.
After the Mass they were exchanging them. Then the children were climbing until the
small mountain near the church and they dropped oranges from the top towards the ravine. Then
they descended and took them. They were doing the same several times, at the end they were
eating them.
Rosenmontag
1st Sunday of Fasting-Orthodoxy
The first Sunday of the Lent was officially celebrated in 843 for the definite restoration of the
icons. Ever since, we celebrate this day as the Sunday of the Orthodoxy. Based on the decisions
of the 7th Ecumenical Synod the iconoclasm was beaten. The iconoclasts refusing to picturise the
image of Christ, they were refusing the incarnation of God in the face of Christ. Thus, they
underestimated both the man and the material. At the end of the Mass the Sunodical, i.e. the
condition of the 7th Ecumenical Synod, is being read, the Triadic God is being praised and the
faith and unity of all orthodox is being asserted. The faithful bow to the icons which are brought
with a procession in the church. The bowing of the icons reveals the orthodox faith, i.e., through
the incarnation of the God's son, the human nature has been deified and the material has been
sanctified. In the persons of saints and Virgin Mary, the human being is being celebrated as
God's creation.

31. 2nd Sunday of Fasting-Gregorios Palamas
During the second Sunday of fasting the service of Gregorios Palamas is being chanted. The
saint from Thessaloniki has been bravely fought for the dogmas of the Eastern Church (descent
of the Holy Spirit, the knowledge of God and the view of the Holy Light).

34. 3rd Sunday of Fasting-Adoration of the Rood
The third Sunday of fasting we celebrate the adoration of the rood and life-giver cross. The
fathers of the Church put this feast-day in the middle of Lent in order for the faithful Christians
to become strong for the rest of the Lent. This is the third station and a source of replenishment
and refilling their powers.
The morning of the celebration the faithful were taking flowers to the church. The priest eulogize
them and at the end of the mass, offers them to the churchgoers. The latter put these flowers to
the icons and they used them as a means to release the evil eye from people or animals that have
been bewitched. The flowers were smoking the evil eye.
After the end of the mass 4 to 5 children, aged 12 to 14, usually school children, used to go the
priest's house and garnished the Cross, put it on a plate and traverse the village. Having the Cross
of the Church at hand and carrying a big basket knocked each villager's door to say the hymn of
the Cross. They proffered the words loud and clear, even though the meaning of the words were
not comprehensible neither by children nor by the villagers.
After they hymn they knocked at the door of the house with the ‘gougda’ which was necessary,
because the dogs did not joke, and they said out loud. ‘come auntie, give us eggs for the
Archbishop’. The housewives opened the door, they bowed to the Cross and put in the basket
whatever they wished to offer. They rival among them, who will give the most, especially the
women living at the outskirts of the villages, and naturally they were offering a lot of chickens.
On the next day one of the lays or of the priests took the offerings to the Cathedral. Thus food
was gathered to confront a difficult situation.
The song of the Cross
We bow to your Cross our Lord
and we glorify Your Resurrection
Ave ‘Vate’ Ave ‘Pyle’, Ave Rood
the Apostle's chorus and the Angels orders
we, your followers, praise
praise here, praise there and next year Health
Amen
4th Sunday of Fasting - John of Scale
Saint John is the writer of the Scale. In this work he exposes the spiritual life of the Christian in
30 steps. The fourth Sunday of Fasting the church chants the service of John of the Scale and
advises the Christians to spiritual lifts’
5th Sunday of Fasting - Holy Marie from Egypt
The 5th Sunday of fasting we celebrate Holy Marie from Egypt. When the Holy Lent approaches
the end, the church praises the service of Holy Marie from Egypt, which aims at the rousement,
the vivification and stimulation of indolent and sinful to repent, setting as example the Saint,
who even though has lived most of her life plunged in the sin, she was saved and became God's
Saint.

36. Όσια Μαρία η Αιγύπτια - Saint Maria of Egypt’s (5th Sunday of fasting) - Hl. Maria von
Ägypten

37. 6th Sunday of Fasting-Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is the beginning of the first week of Easter which is called Holy Week or Passion
Week which is the culmination of the Lent. Our Lord Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem and walks
towards the voluntary Passion, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. People welcome him with
palms, i.e. palms' boughs, which symbolized the victory of Christ against Devil and Death. The
miracle of Lazarus Resurrection has increased enthusiasm. ‘Hosanna, blessed the oncoming on
our Lord's name, the king of Israel’. Hosanna means ‘please save’. Jesus sitting on the donkey,
an animal untamed at the time, and dirty according to the law, meant the first wilderness of the
nations and the impurity from the sin as well as their submission to the evangelic law of Christ. It
also symbolized the peace, while the horse the war.
Unser Herr Jesus Christus zieht in Jerusalem

40
41. Holy Week
The Holy Week is for all Christians the biggest feast. Easter for Hebrews means ‘crosswalk’
‘passing through’ (of the vindictive angel) from the Israelis houses, when he will punish the
Egyptians. For Christians Easter must be the hellenized type of ‘pesax’ with the addition of the
ending -a.
Upon completion of the forty days (time during which we fast), the said Lent, we have the
Saturday of Lazarus Palm Sunday and after that we enter the Holy Week.
Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday night we chant the service of ‘Nymphios’. The Icon of
‘Nymphios’ is been projected and the faithful bow. Holy Wednesday we have the mass of
‘Nymphios’ where Christ washes the feet of his disciples in the Last Supper. Holy Thursday is
the Passion Week service. The church has programmed very wisely every mass and the mass of
the Holy Passions. There are several hymns chanted and among others the evangelical pericopes,
which are 12 in number. The night of the Holy Thursday, both young and older try become
communicants, so that they could become communicants of his Resurrection.
Good Friday follows the burial of our Lord. All day long the bells bongs mourningly. With the
mystery of worship we live the last act of transfer of Epitaph to the Altar, where the altar
symbolizes our Lord tomb.
Holy Saturday we have the mass of the Resurrection. We have the great entrance, the priest
passes with the sanctum. He has on his plate the lamb and on the holy glass the blood (they will
become the body and the blood of Christ). As the service proceeds Jesus ‘is been slaughtered’.
Therefore we commune the body and the blood of Jesus, of the ‘slaughtered’ Jesus, whose blood
was poured, who was resurrected and ascended in heaven and sat on the right of his Father. On
this day everything is ascendable. During the time of the Holy Week Christians go to church to
experience the passion and feel that there is another reality, that there is a divine life that our
Jesus offers us. They fast. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday we should not eat oil. If feasible
one should also abstain from oil even on Wednesday.
Easter, expect for the church life, is a time where customs fill Christian's lives.
During the three first days of the Holly Week, the housewives make buns. The best of them are
to be given by the children of each family to their godparents together with red eggs. The
godparents, on their behalf, are going to offer the candle for taking the holy light the day of the
Resurrection, together with a chocolate egg. On holy Thursday they paint the eggs red. On holy
Saturday, when the bells bong cheerfully, the Christians take the holy light, exchange wishes,
clink eggs and go home. The man of the family, when reaches his house, makes a cross with the
smoke of the candle with the holy light on the door of the house. The wife lights the vigil light
and afterwards everyone sits on the table the eat ‘magiritsa’ (soup made from entrails of the lamb
with vegetables).
Karwoche

Easter
On Easter day our Lord was resurrected and he was resurrected so that we resurrect as well and
to be for us the first and the second resurrection. Now we are in this world, our soil which is
dead from our sins, resurrects in the next life for eternity.
On Easter day people prepare the ‘ovelias’ (lamb roasted in the brochette) and enrich their lunch
table. On this day Christians enjoy, feast, drink, eat and dance. They have experience the
message of Death and Resurrection of our Lord, whom his father sent to give us a chance to save
ourselves.
OSTERSONNTAG
