Tradition vs. Innovation: Is it a battle of beliefs?
How do we find the balance?
How do we meld a school that has
great traditions with the
innovations in education that seem
to be coming into fruition all
around us?
Do we throw the
baby out with the
  bath water?

We’re looking for balance between the
things that are innovative that make
              students successful learners and those
              traditions that do the same.
All items once
considered innovative
 that we couldn’t live
        without.
Name the innovation

        Thomas Edison
        predicted that, thanks
        to this innovation,
        “books will soon be
        obsolete in schools.”
Name the innovation
New York City’s Board of Education
 was actually the first organization
to send lessons to schools via
device. Over the next couple of
 decades, millions of American
 students experienced lessons from
 it.
Goal: Successful Learners

Tradition Innovation
Digit?
Digit?
      Ditch it?
Digit?
What are some traditional classroom staples?

           Ditch it?

Digit?
      True

      Ditch it?
                 False
A (mostly) rhetorical question

Does it mean that something needs to get crossed off
the traditional list in order to make room for innovation?

Additionally, (still rhetorical?)
✴Does innovation exist to make our lives easier?
What does innovation mean?
What does innovation mean?

Innovation is the creation of better or more effective
products, processes, services, technology or ideas that are
accepted by markets, governments and society. Innovation
differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of
a new idea or method, whereas invention refers more
directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.

Innovation = use of that tool
What do we value?
The Bryn Mawr School is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school for girls from preschool through grade twelve.
Within a nurturing environment, Bryn Mawr's rigorous academic curriculum inspires a passion for intellectual curiosity and
emphasizes the delights and demands of learning. In the classical humanistic tradition, Bryn Mawr promotes the full
development of mind, body, and spirit. The school cultivates respect for diversity and engenders habits of moral and ethical
leadership and a sense of responsibility to the broader community.

A Bryn Mawr education is grounded in the expectation that young women will be resilient in the face of complexity, ambiguity, and
change; will become responsible and confident participants in the world; and, will lead considered and consequential lives.
How do we use our new tool to do those
things we value?
Where do we go from here?
We also go to our break out sessions
