History Jazz Started in the 2oth century from the south. There were laws in the south that prohibited any African Americans to succeed in their lives, so they migrated to the north. These jazz artists started playing at clubs, but their fame did not come straight away. Because of the Great Depression, people were looking for something new-something uplifting. This new form of music, which had mostly improvisation, was the new thing for the young generation to enjoy themselves with. There are a various amounts of style in jazz, for instance: Big-band, bebop, Jazz Fusion and acid jazz. Jazz continues to increase over years but it all started from the early 1920’s to this day and age.
So How Has Jazz Influenced the United States?
Fashion Jazz has mainly impacted the fashion of women. During the hard times of the depression-young people would want to go out and have fun. But they asked: “How can we have fun in these tight outfits? Everything is so heavy and hot to wear” The answer was wear looser, shinier and fun outfits. As well as the girls cutting hair so short so everything would be much lighter. Jazz was the initiator of the flapper outfits. Young women would walk into the club with their short hair and dresses, that had a lot of thread hanging from it, to start the party. When they moved or danced to the jazz the outfit it self would dance.

  • 11. Not getting married straight away.Jazz has given so many advantages in women’s lives. They became more independent and lived for themselves before giving their life away to have a family.
  • 12. Racial Tension The Ku Klux Klan was settled down and became less open about their cult until the 1920’s; because of the African American’s rising up in fame and starting to have more rights. The ideal world to the KKK is the African Americans getting put below the White race. So once they noticed all of the African Americans migrating north and succeeding, the KKK became out raged. They were so upset with these events that they decided to rise in power, and ended up achieving 24 Klan members out of the 48, to be state legislature. Despite the rising powers of the KKK, the African Americans had their jazz, which has now spread across the world, were practically free and everybody loved them. Thanks to Jazz.
  • 13. Summing it up… At first people were surprised and happy about this innovation, but mostly the northerners, and people seemed to adapt to the life of jazz quite quickly. Jazz started in the early 1900’s but did not really show any affect on the USA until late 20’s. Over time jazz has morphed and changed turning it into many different forms of music, which then expanded over seas. I think the USA needed jazz to put us out of our funk and swing us onto progression with our lives. After, this presentation I hope that you as well are convinced that Jazz was one of the best inventions yet!
  • 14. Why is Jazz a great invention? It has pushed for rights: Women’s and African America It gave a sense of individuality for Women It was a new form of music Many forms of music came from Jazz for instance techno Great thing to listen to on a holiday evening!
  • 15. Thank you! For watching my presentation, and I hope you will have a wonderful summer  -Alicia Holden
