Answer by tiny_lil_hottie
you have way too much stuff to be zen like. you would have to strip out everything you don’t
absolutely need. get some neat and clean looking storage totes or baskets for everything you
have cluttering up the room and then bring in some minimal flowers. actually you would have
more luck going for a country cottage look with your furniture.

Question by The Only: Best flowers for the edge of my garden?
Hi, I live in Ohio.. I think zone 5. I’d rather not have to dig anything up in the fall. i
recently dug out a small round garden, and I have a brick retention wall up. Inside are
hostas, catmint, hardy glads, red king crocosmia, dill, basil and parsley. I’d like to put
something around the edges, to sort of fill it in a bit.. preferably low maintanance, that
isn’t expensive to plant a reasonable amount of. Any suggestions? Anything else that
would look nice with the other plants is good too, doesn’t just have to be the edge.
Also a suggestion for something to go in a big planter next to a swing in my backyard.. it
will be mostly shade.

Not what you want to see first thing in the morning. When I went to bed last night there
was a rather nice tree stump there and the fence didn’t have a massive hole in it.

Investigations are under way.

For more information see here.
To clarify, that’s the eastern fence of our garden (our house faces approximately north)
and that’s our neighbour’s garden you can see through the gap.

Question by KJean: Garden fence posts – treated round or square 4×4′s?
And fencing?
I’m putting up a 24′ by 70′ garden fence. I have a choice between round 10 foot posts or
square 4×4′s. Which is better? Or is there something else to look at?
Also fencing, I am thinking 5 foot field fencing with 1″x2″ spaces and then single wire
above that every 10 inches with blue marking tape tied to it. We have lots of deer, rabbits
and other critters. What spacing between posts can I get away with for this type of
fencing? I am thinking 15 feet for fence.
Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by Controlfreak38
Most round posts are peeler cores which tend to warp a little more than 4X4′s. They both
work pretty well. I am not certain about spacing from your description of the type of
fence, but it seems a little far. Unless you get a lot of tension on the wires it seems they
will sag. Most fence post spacing is more like 8 to 10 ft.

Question by Meadows Momma: Vegetable garden question about fertilizer
vs. planting soil??
My question would be this. I am staring my vegetable garden this weekend. However I
don’t know which I should be using fertilizer or planting soil?? When I till the ground
which of the two do I use to mix with the dirt? I am new to this whole idea and could use
any helpful tips or advice.
Also should I use manure??
Best answer:
Answer by Mustanger
If by “planting soil” you mean the “potting soil” sold at nurseries and grocery stores, you
don’t want to use it in the garden. Also don’t use chemical fertilizers. Look for fish or
seaweed liquid fertilizers as they are organic, contain no chemicals and are great for use
in the garden. Vegetable scraps and peels, egg shells and coffee & tea grounds are great
soil conditioners, if you run them through a blender to chop them up and then compost
them.

Garden Hose

Question by fishbone: How do I calculate my garden hose PSI?
I want to purchase a pond vacuum which requires about 40 PSI. I don’t need an EXACT
measurement, just something to go by. The garden hose is a standard type, half an inch
diameter, about 50 feet long on a slight incline and I’ve measured the water flow to be
about 10 to 12 gallons per minute.
Best answer:
Answer by Ray
If you are really looking a 40 psig of positive pressure in a 1/2″ -3/4″ garden hose, I
believe you will be well within the design working range. There is no way to calculate such
a working pressure from the information at hand. In general smaller diameter pipe and
tubing ace will handle much higher pressures than larger tubing of the same
construction.
About the vacuum, you can only achieve about 15 psig of vacuum with any system (on
Earth). Just as with positive pressure, small diameters are less likely to collapse under
vacuum than larger. Even a 5/8 -3/4″ hose would probably be fine for the maximum
attainable vacuum of ( -) 15 psig.

Edward Leedskalnin was the one who built the Coral Castle and did so, to the best he

Trillium and Bloodroot in bloom at Morning Sky Greenery
This is my first batch of 2009 photos from Morning Sky Greenery. Sally called to say that
the Trillium and Bloodroot were in bloom and wouldn’t last long, so I ran out and spent
about an hour shooting in the early morning. I then went back that evening to try to catch
some outdoor shots, but some clouds had come in and the light was really flat. I did get a
lot of equipment shots in the second greenhouse, however, with an emphasis on empty
pots. I probably spent half an hour on those.

After removing the obviously broken photos, I’ve divided them into two groups: The
"better" shots (in my opinion) (this set) and the rest.
Sally, et al, should go through these and identify photos that they like/think they can use.
Please also tell me when there are gaps or styles that you need and which are missing. I
tend to shoot a very particular way when left to my own devices (lots of close-ups, for
example), and if you need something else definitely speak up!

I’ve spent most of two hours moving today’s photos to the computer, filtering out the
obviously broken shots, and uploading the rest to Flickr for Sally to look at.

Hi, I live in Ohio.. I think zone 5. I’d rather not have to dig anything up in the fall. i recently dug out a small round garden, and I have a brick retention wall up. Inside are hostas, catmint, hardy glads, red king crocosmia, dill, basil and parsley. I’d like to put something around the edges, to sort of fill it in a bit.. preferably low maintanance, that isn’t expensive to plant a reasonable amount of. Any suggestions? Anything else that would look nice with the other plants is good too, doesn’t just have to be the edge. Also a suggestion for something to go in a big planter next to a swing in my backyard.. it will be mostly shade. Best answer: Answer by soccerstar:) i say something red:) What do you think? Question by KJean: Garden fence posts – treated round or square 4×4′s? And fencing? I’m putting up a 24′ by 70′ garden fence. I have a choice between round 10 foot posts or square 4×4′s. Which is better? Or is there something else to look at? Also fencing, I am thinking 5 foot field fencing with 1″x2″ spaces and then single wire above that every 10 inches with blue marking tape tied to it. We have lots of deer, rabbits and other critters. What spacing between posts can I get away with for this type of fencing? I am thinking 15 feet for fence. Thanks Best answer: Answer by Controlfreak38 Most round posts are peeler cores which tend to warp a little more than 4X4′s. They both work pretty well. I am not certain about spacing from your description of the type of fence, but it seems a little far. Unless you get a lot of tension on the wires it seems they will sag. Most fence post spacing is more like 8 to 10 ft. Give your answer to this question below!

Photo by: Peter Morgan in May 2009, Epworth-Zimbabwe. Question by Meadows Momma: Vegetable garden question about fertilizer vs. planting soil?? My question would be this. I am staring my vegetable garden this weekend. However I don’t know which I should be using fertilizer or planting soil?? When I till the ground which of the two do I use to mix with the dirt? I am new to this whole idea and could use any helpful tips or advice. Also should I use manure?? Best answer: Answer by Mustanger If by “planting soil” you mean the “potting soil” sold at nurseries and grocery stores, you don’t want to use it in the garden. Also don’t use chemical fertilizers. Look for fish or seaweed liquid fertilizers as they are organic, contain no chemicals and are great for use in the garden. Vegetable scraps and peels, egg shells and coffee & tea grounds are great soil conditioners, if you run them through a blender to chop them up and then compost them. • 13. Answer by Ray If you are really looking a 40 psig of positive pressure in a 1/2″ -3/4″ garden hose, I believe you will be well within the design working range. There is no way to calculate such a working pressure from the information at hand. In general smaller diameter pipe and tubing ace will handle much higher pressures than larger tubing of the same construction. About the vacuum, you can only achieve about 15 psig of vacuum with any system (on Earth). Just as with positive pressure, small diameters are less likely to collapse under vacuum than larger. Even a 5/8 -3/4″ hose would probably be fine for the maximum attainable vacuum of ( -) 15 psig.
