John Graunt (1620-1674) was one of the first demographers in England. Though by profession he was a haberdasher, Graunt made significant contributions to early statistics and census methods through his analysis of mortality records in London. His most notable work, Natural and Political Observations Made upon the Bills of Mortality, was one of the first to use statistical analysis and helped estimate London's population size. Graunt's work helped establish the fields of medical statistics and demography, leading to major advances in public health. He made important contributions despite not having a formal background, and was respected for his peacemaking and involvement in various civic roles in London.

4. Achievement
Graunt, along with William Petty, developed early human
statistical and census methods that later provided a framework for
modern demography. He is credited with producing the first life table,
giving probabilities of survival to each age. Graunt is also considered
as one of the first experts in epidemiology, since his famous book was
concerned mostly with public health statistics. His book Natural and
Political Observations Made upon the Bills of Mortality (1662 Old
Style or 1663 New Style) used analysis of the mortality rolls in early
modern London as Charles II and other officials attempted to create
a system to warn of the onset and spread of bubonicplague in the city.
Though the system was never truly created, Graunt's work in
studying the rolls resulted in the first statistically based estimation of
the population of London.

6. Comment & Opinion
about John Graunt
We salute his totallity contribution for the development of medical
statistics and demography. John Graunt was actually a haberdasher .
which did not stop him being accepted into the Royal Society.
He did well in business. By the time of the Great Fire (1666) he
had become "an opulent merchant of London, of great weight and
consideration in the city." He was known as a great peacemaker and was
often chosen an arbitrator between disputing merchants. He held several
offices in the Drapers' Company. He had a well developed interest in art.
He was a friend of the miniaturist Samuel Cooper and of the portrait
painter John Hayls (Hales). He was also an important collector.
