 Other Children- They get bullied and teased.
 Community- some employers don’t want to
hire them due to their disability, but have to
it is the law.
 Family Members- some family members feel
embarrassed because of their strange
behavior.
 Siblings feel jealous because too much
attention is given to the child with special
needs.
 Parental roles are given to the child with out
special needs.
 Siblings feel embarrassed of their siblings
behavior.
 “80% of marriages end in divorce due to
strain of raising a special needs child.
Marriage in itself is difficult when everything
is going about its “normal” course. But when
you are raising a disabled child, there is a
different dynamic involved that can cause
added strain to your relationship”.
There is resentment for the attention the other parent
pays to the child .The additional needs of a child with
autism often puts all focus and time on that child to
the neglect of the marital relationship. The cost of
treatment can put financial strain on a household
and marriage.
 Work cooperatively and collaborate with
special education teachers.
 Integrate learning styles of all students.
 Be creative in your teaching. Have students
work cooperatively in groups. Have students
interact and work with all students
regardless of their disabilities or differences.
 Teach your students about
acceptance/tolerance. Students need to
understand that we are all different, but we
are alike in that we have feelings.
 Work closely with parents. “In order to meet students
needs we need to develop good working relationships
with parents. Parents are a valuable source of
information. Parents can inform you about their
child’s characteristics, abilities, and needs of their
children; they can be helpful in securing the
necessary services for their children”. You can also
help them get the necessary resources for the family.
 Ex. Refer them to counseling or programs in the
community that may benefit the whole family.
 Invite parents into the classroom. Let them interact
with their child and children in the classroom. You
can also have parents simply come to the classroom
and red book.
 East Los Angeles Regional Center-They provide
services to children and adults with developmental
disabilities. Individuals are assigned a service
provider . They gather information and conduct
assessments about the individual with developmental
disabilities to identify services and supports for the
Individual Program Plan (IPP)/Individual Family
Service Plan (IFSP). Using person centered
strategies, the team identifies the individual’s life
goals, capabilities, strengths, preferences, barriers
and challenges while taking into consideration the
person’s interests, hopes, dreams, likes, dislikes, as
it relates to community, living, employment, leisure
etc.
