Twist Drill Bit
Used to drill accurate holes
in wood, metal and plastic.
Common sizes range from
0.5mm-10mm.

Forstner Drill Bit
Used to drill flat-bottomed
holes in wood. Used with a
pillar drill.

Hole Saw
Used to drill holes (or make
discs/wheels) in wood and
plastic sheets.

Carpenter’s Brace
Used with auger bits (e.g.
Jennings Pattern) to drill
large holes in wood. A brace
allows a lot of force to be
applied to the drill bit.

Jennings Pattern Auger Bit
Used with a carpenter’s
brace to drill deep holes in
wood (e.g. when making
furniture). Drill bits are
available in large sizes.

Countersink Drill Bit
Used to make conical
(sloping) holes (wood, metal
and plastics) to hide the
head of woodscrews and
metal rivets.

Flat Drill Bit
Used to cut deep holes in
wood. This drill bit removes
the wood chips quickly.

Bevel Edge Chisel
Used to cut joints (e.g.
mortise and tenon joints)
and to remove waste wood
from awkward places. A
chisel can also be used to
shape wood.

Wooden Mallet
Used to hit wood chisels
when chiseling. It is also
used to knock wood joints
into place.

Rubber Mallet
Used to bend sheet metal
without damaging the
metal. Can also be used to
separate and gently knock
wood joints into place.

Claw Hammer
Used to hammer in and
remove large nails,
particularly when roofing
houses.

Cross-pein Hammer
Used to hammer in small
nails (e.g. panel pins).

Ball-pein Hammer
Used to hammer in larger
nails and to flatten the
heads of metal rivets (ball-
pein end).

Tenon (Back) Saw
Used to cut wood to length
and to cut joints (e.g. tenon
joints).

Hacksaw
Used to cut thicker sections
of metal and plastic (bar,
rod and tube).

Junior Hacksaw
Used to cut thin sections of
metal and plastic (bar, rod
and tube).

Coping Saw
Used to cut curves in thin
sheets of wood or plastic,
such as acrylic. The blade
can be rotated through 90
degrees.

Rip Saw
Used to cut thicker wood
(timber) along the grain
(lengthways).

Nail Punch
Used to hammer the heads
of oval nails below the
surface of the wood.

Carpenter’s Pincers
Used to remove small bent
nails without damaging your
work.

Scriber
Used to score (scribe) thin
lines on metal sheet. The
metal is usually coated with
a blue dye which makes the
lines more visible.

Smoothing Plane
Used to level the surface
and edges of wood. A good
tool to remove unwanted
blemishes.

Surform
Used to shape, level and
smooth wood. The blades
can be easily replaced when
blunt or damaged.

Rasp
Used to rapidly remove
waste material. A rasp is
used on soft materials such
as aluminium, plaster and
wood.

Flat Hand File
Used to remove waste
material (wood, metal and
plastic) to a finished size.
Using a file is the first stage
of finishing/smoothing
materials.

Bench Hook
Used to hold wood more
securely when sawing. One
end is fixed in the
woodworker’s vice to stop it
from moving.

Woodworker’s Try Square
Used to mark 90 degree
lines on wood and to check
that edges/corners of
materials are square.

Engineer’s Try Square
Used to mark 90 degree
lines on metal and plastic
and to check that
edges/corners of materials
are square.

Steel Rule
Used to measure and mark
out wood, metal and
plastics.

Marking Knife
Used to mark (score) lines
across wood. Particularly
useful when marking out
accurate joints.

Marking Gauge
Used to mark parallel lines
to a given edge on wood.
These gauges are also used
to mark out joints (e.g.
tenon joints).

Jenny (Odd-leg) Calipers
Used to mark (score)
parallel lines on metal

Spirit Level
Used to test that vertical
and horizontal
edges/surfaces are level

Woodworker’s Vice
Used to hold wood securely
when sawing, chiseling,
shaping, filing etc.

Engineer’s Vice
Used to hold metal securely
when filing, drilling, bending
etc.

G Cramp
Used to hold wood joints
until the glue sets. It is also
used to secure work to the
workbench (e.g. when
chiseling) to prevent it from
moving.

Sash Clamp
Used to hold (clamp) longer
pieces of wood until the
glue dries.

Corner Clamp
Used to hold corner joints
until the glue sets (dries).

Machine Vice
Used to hold your work
securely when drilling. The
vice can be bolted to the
drill table.

Hand Vice
Used to hold small
sheets/sections of wood,
metal or plastic more safely
and securely when drilling.

Toggle Clamp
A special type of clamp that
can be quickly locked and
released. Used on vacuum
formers to clamp the plastic
sheet into position.

Bench Pillar Drill
Used with drill bits to drill
precise holes in wood, metal
and plastic. Goggles must be
worn when using this
machine.

Band Saw
Used to cut thicker sections
of wood and plastic (sheets,
blocks, tubes) in straight
lines or curves.

Disc & Belt Sanding
Machine
Used to remove waste
material and smooth the
edges of wood and plastic
sheets/blocks.

Reciprocating (Scroll) Saw
Used to cut accurate curves
in thin sheet wood and
plastic.

Strip Heater
Used to heat thin plastic
sheet (e.g. acrylic) so that it
can be easily bent along a
line.

Vacuum Forming Machine
Used to heat and mould
plastic sheet into a variety
of hollow forms (e.g. inserts
for toy packaging).

Injection Moulding
Machine
Used to mould intricate
plastic objects such as
telephones and electrical
appliances (casings).

Electric Power Drill
Used with drill bits to
quickly drill holes in wood,
metal, plastic and concrete.

Cordless Power Drill
Used with drill and
screwdriver bits to make
holes and drive in
woodscrews.
