6. The prince needs to marry a princess by
his thirtieth birthday, or the court will
dismiss him.
Princess Araya, wearing torn and muddy
clothes, arrives at the castle. The prince
doubts that Araya is a princess. The
queen asks the prince whether he will
marry Araya if the queen can prove that
Araya is a princess. The prince agrees.
Araya is sent to a bed of seven feather
mattresses. The queen orders that a
pebble be placed on top of the seventh
mattress to test Araya's royal blood.
Instead of sleeping, Araya gives the
mattresses away to poor people. The
prince sees her true worth and agrees to
marry her.

Tsar: a ruler in Russia having great or absolute

and stories that many believe but which aren't
true.
regal: having qualities of a king or other rule.
9. Alexi seeks fortune and adventure. He
meets a Golden Mare that can speak.
The mare takes Alexi to the Tsar. The Tsar is
impressed with the mare and hires Alexi as
a huntsman.
At midnight, maize was scattered over the
field, and Alexi took the saddle off the
Golden Mare. Then Alexi hid in a nearby
tree. All night they waited. As the first
golden rays of dawn lit the sky, the
Firebird came flying.
The Tsar supplies Alexi with a tent and fine
foods. For seven days Alexi travels with the
Golden Mare. When they arrive at Lake of
the Sun, they see Yelena's boat. After
Alexi erects the tent, Yelena comes
ashore. She is impressed with Alexi's
manner and agrees to accompany him
to the Tsar's palace.
First, the Golden Mare helps Alexi
become a huntsman for the Tsar. Then
she helps him capture the Firebird and
takes him to Yelena the Fair, whom the
Tsar wants to marry. The mare goes the
fetch Yelena's grandmother's wedding
ring. Yelena tells the Tsar he is too old to
marry her, but a boiling cauldron of water
will make him young again. Finally, the
Tsar wants Alexi to get into the cauldron
first.
10. A Modern Fairy Tale
• Fairy tales are often about wishes that come
true but bring about disaster instead of good
fortune. Write a "Be Careful What You Wish
For" story in which a character's wish comes
true and makes the character regret the
wish.
• The character should learn a lesson from the
experience. What is the lesson?
• Decide on a sequence of events before you
start writing. Also give the narrator a clear
voice.
11. If you dismiss someone, you fire that person
from a job.
Intentions are plans to act in a certain way.
Despair is lack of all hope.
The straps that fit around a horse's head
and guide the horse are called the bridle.
12. Descended means to have moved from a
