How to Study Abroad An Ohio University student’s journey through the Office of Education Abroad
Ohio University student Krista Meyer wants information on studying abroad but doesn’t know where to go for help.
Lindley Hall, located on Court Street in Athens, Ohio, houses the Office of Education Abroad in room 185.
After asking for help, Meyer learns where to go and that she can receive advising from the Office between 1 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Meyer is instructed to fill out a general interest form and to wait for an adviser to assist her. The form requires information such as personal and academic information about the student and preferred travel destinations. Pamphlets are provided in the office for information on various areas of the world.
Bethany Scott, a student advisor in the office, goes over information regarding types of programs offered, application information and financial aid opportunities. Advisers will also walk through requirements and coursework of each program with a student on the office’s website.
Meyer expresses her concern that she may not be able to afford a study abroad experience and is unsure about what to do.
Scott assures here that funding a study abroad experience is easier than she thinks. She explains that scholarships, grants, loans and sponsorships are available and gives her creative ideas on how to fund her experience.
Advisors are also able to provide information on various destinations if a student is unsure as to where they would like to travel. The Resource Center holds this information. Here, Scott and Meyer spend time looking through it.
Meyer finally decides that she will apply study Italian in Italy during Fall quarter of the 2011-2012 school year.
Students looking to be advised after Winter quarter 2011 will need to visit the Office of Education Abroad’s new location next to Baker University Center on Park Place. The building is currently being renovated to house the office and other international student services.
