3. Apartheid
Apartheid was a system of
racial segregation enforced by
the National Party governments
of South Africa between 1948
and 1994, under which the
rights of the majority non-white
inhabitants of South Africa were
curtailed and white
supremacy and
Afrikaner minority rule was
maintained

5. South Africa
South Africa
Just one country in the
region, but has had great
influence socially and
economically
Until the 1990’s the
white, European minority ruled
South Africa
When England took control of South
Africa in 1932, they categorized
people by the color of their skin
Blacks and Indians had little to no
rights under this system of
apartheid
The colored majority fought for
years against apartheid, creating
a strong sense of nationalism
and community
Wanted more say in their
government
6. South Africa
Today, South Africa is
one of the richest and
more industrialized
nations in Africa
It produces 2/5 of all
manufactured goods, ½ of the
minerals, and 1/5 of the
agricultural productions
Labor demand; provided
jobs to other countries in
Southern Africa
Miners
Migrant workers; people
who move from place to
place to find word
7. Migrant Workers
Migrant Worker Identity
Miners lived and worked
in terrible conditions
Although they were from
different countries, they
formed a bond living
together far from home
Think of themselves as a
group
“A person is a person
because of people”
New sense of identity not
based on
language, religion, or
ethnicity
In the 1980’s, mine
workers formed a union
Fought for rights
Strikes
8. Changes
Tradition and
Change
Experiencing cultural
changes
Central Africa is very
diverse and trying to
cling to tradition
Mbuti in the rain forest;
3000 year old culture
But millions live in
shanty towns in the city
2 different worlds;
rural and city
