With Liberty and Justice For All Learning About Ellis Island
Where is Ellis Island? Ellis Island is a piece of land located in the upper portion of New York Bay.
What is Ellis Island? In 1891, Ellis Island was chosen by the Immigration Bureau to be the location of the immigration station.
What Happened On Ellis Island? Ellis Island was know as the “front door to freedom.”  It was here that immigrants were accepted into the United States.
Who goes to Ellis Island Immigrants from European countries arrive at Ellis Island. These passengers were usually  Third class because inspectors believed poor passengers were more likely to be sick.
The inspections all took place in the registry room.  The physicians had the ability to detect defects and medical conditions very quickly.   Physical Inspection
Deportation Inspectors sent people back to their home country if they had a contagious disease or if it was determined that they were not mentally healthy.
Ellis Island Today Today, Ellis Island serves as a museum to educate us about America’s immigrant history.
Did You Know… Ellis Island was originally only 3.3 acres.  Throughout the years, it has grown in size to 27.5 acres.  The reason for its growth has been the fact that they put landfill from  ship ballast  and extra dirt from the construction of the New York City subway system there.
