The textbook glosses over this point in the introduction, but I thought it would be important to take a moment and discuss the significance of music in our lives. Music is interwoven into so many traditions and rituals in our society. (the “soundtrack” of our lives)
Now that we’ve talked about some of the rituals and customs in which music plays into the “Soundtrack” of our lives, let’s talk about the marketing and advertising that infiltrates our senses on a daily basis. Advertising and marketing executives have spent a considerable amount of time and money to discover how music influences our behavior when it comes to buying products and services. Forgive me, for I have not updated the music in this presentation in about 10 years, but let’s see if any of you can remember these commercial hits from the early 2000’s.

Perhaps the individuals that know the most about how music affects our emotion and intellect is those who compose film scores. Let’s see if you can name these movie themes? Who knew that two notes could create a whole film score?
How about movies that convey the unthinkable? Perhaps not so much now, with the new trend of ‘reality TV’ style horror movies, but ‘back in the day,’ music was one of the critical aspects that sent shivers up ones spine and got the hairs tingling on the back of your head.
Back to advertising and marketing executives, Sirius Radio and other commercial satellite radio programs also have a stake in influencing customer behavior. How many of you have run out for a late night “Walgreens run” and found yourself walking up and down every aisle to this? Or- 10 minutes to close, it turns to this…
Like video games!? Instrumental music is alive and well with the advent of the video game composer. Perhaps some of your remember DDR from the early 2000’s.
Although it is true that music participation, in the “Classical” sense of the term is declining and the sale of acoustic pianos have dwindled, there are some popular “Classics” that continue throughout the ages. Raise your hand if you’ve heard these tunes. (and don’t worry…. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to name them, the composer, and talk about them.)
Long before Rhianna was doing it, plenty of artists have borrowed from “Classical influences” since the beginning of time. Here are just a few examples from the past few decades.

Perhaps the mystification behind the origin of music would account for the inability to describe it. Confucius once said that, “Music is born of emotion.” Music may even predate human speech!
Music may even predate human speech. It has been viewed both literally and figuratively as a form of language or speech, less specific than the spoken word, but with more emotive force.
Music has also been perceived as an inherently mystical or occult force, able to unlock elementary truths or principles that cannot otherwise be translated into written or graphic form.
Certain branches of psychology and sociology consider the association of music on mental processes and social change. Many do not notice the profound effect that music has on our lives.
Many do not notice the profound effect that music has on our lives.
Back in the 90’s, a bunch of researchers discovered that listening to “Classical music” resulted in improved test scores for kids. Various mental tasks and spatial reasoning were said to have been positively impacted.
Although we’ve been talking about the inherently good properties of music, some have harnessed the negative properties of music by using music as a weapon or instrument of “torture.” I’m not going to talk about this too much, but there are military applications of music, which you can easily find out more about on the internet, if interested.
Before we jump into a survey of musical eras, styles, and composers, we’re going to discuss the elements of music which differentiate it from sound. Please read chapter 1 in your book, look for some discussion boards, links, surveys/polls and practice quizzes on ANGEL, and some easy ‘journaling’ types of writing exercises which will serve as pieces/parts of your writing exercises.
