6TH SAT SEMINAR: WOMEN AND PUBLIC SPACE in Conference Room 1, IIC Main Building

10:00 AM Welcome Address - Jai Chandiram, President, IAWRT India and Director, Asian Women's Film Festival 2010

10:15 AM What does public space signify for women? Do they have access to it? How do options of
citizenship and justice define this space? When women enter the public space, what are the
challenges they face? How do they tackle patriarchy and caste oppression in the Indian
context? Can women expand or redefine the public space? The aim of the seminar is to show
women’s relation to the public space in various settings and contexts through women’s
             everyday life experiences.

producing highly watched soaps and reality shows, viewers of these programmes and experts
in the area of psychology, media research, development communication and film making.
CHANGING REPRESENTATION: ARE WE CONFRONTING "REAL" ISSUES?

This session will look at the so-called changing dynamics of serials and reality shows and examine whether
the change is real and meaningful. To share their professional insight and understanding, we are inviting a

popular serials and reality shows) to present their perspectives.

The panelists will give their take on how they perceive the so-called changing dynamics of serials and
reality and share their insight and understanding on whether these changes are true and meaningful for
the audiences that they are seeking to reach out in scale and impact.

 4:00 PM TEA BREAK

4:15 PM VIEWERS SPEAKE: WHAT WE THINK ABOUT TV?

Responding to them a panel of media viewers, representing diverse realities will share their perspective
and focus on their personal experiences and insight about the specific effects that television fiction and
reality shows has had on them. Some of the viewers concerns that we will explore through a panel of
experts (drawn from diverse professional fields such as film makers, psychologists, individuals anchoring
popular shows, academia) are "selling dreams", “impacting self-esteem" and "raising aspirations".
