By Myles Egan
POSTER
FROM LOOKING AT THE POSTER WHAT DO WE
LEARN/UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE STYLE OF/GENRE AND
OF/AUDIENCE FOR THE FILM?
The finger prints suggest that
the style of film is creepy and
eerie – therefore understand the
style and possibly a genre of
thriller.
From looking at the poster, we can
understand that it is a product of the
social realism genre due to the dull
and dreary colour palette.
The polaroid's and finger prints allow
the consumer to understand that it is
also a product of the thriller genre as
it creates a dark side to it and suggests
that there could be a conviction in the
film.
The tag line tells the audience that
the genre could be thriller as the
phrase ‘the camera never lies’ has
been changed to ‘the camera
always lies’ and because of the twist
on a common phrase this creates a
dark and eerie presence.
The choice of wording in the reviews
suggests that the product could be
aimed at a mainstream audience as
the vocabulary is suitable to all
intelligence, compared to the usual
social realism products that will use
vocabulary such as: poignant,
profound and mesmerising.
The use of texture in the title, Polaroid's and background
reflect stylistic elements of decay and allow the audience
interpret this into the genre social realism.
The laurel leaves symbolise
that the style of the film is a
professional product and by
the names of the awards, it is
clear that is for an independent
audience.
The eerie and secretive
locations in the Polaroid's
are film content and
therefore inform the style of
location to the audience.
HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES THE POSTER
REFLECT/REPRESENT THEMES AND ISSUES OF THE
FILM?
The polaroid’s shown are very
eerie, empty and hidden and don’t
have a clear focus – this shows the
protagonists minimalistic identity
that could be mistaken for a
hidden personality and anonymity
and also his unclear intentions;
therefore representing the theme
of appearance vs. reality.
The Polaroid’s also show the issue
of people watching and people
being watched; the right to look and
the right to not be looked at, which
is a key theme in my film as the
guy’s intentions seem completely
harmless until he has a physical
photograph of the girl and this
could be considered as crossing the
line.
The finger print also represents
the issue of violence in the film
as finger prints are often linked
to criminal behaviour and
therefore the audience can
expect violence within the film.
The polaroid's of the roads show
the trees hanging over the top
of the photo and represents the
issues of entrapment and
isolation in the film.
The tag line represents the
theme of appearance vs.
reality as it shows that there
will be lying involved in the
film.
The poster is presented very
mysteriously as there is no
character shown and creates
anonymity and mystery, which
reflect the issue of anonymity
HOW FAR AND HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES THE
POSTER REFLECT THE STYLE OF THE FILM?
The textures used in the title,
background and also the use of
Polaroid's as it creates a natural
grain reflects the roughness and
decayed feeling to the story and
aesthetics within the film.
Due to the dull and dreary colours
the audience can understand that it
is a product of the social realism
genre as the social realism genre is
renowned for this. Also, that there
is potentially a creepy, thriller side
to the product with the use of the
polaroid’s, finger prints and
locations used in the images and
the colours of these as they look
very haunting due to the empty
eerie spaces and vintage aesthetic.
The use of the grainy texture in the
background of the poster
represents a certain aesthetic
commonly used in scary and thriller
movies as this gives an
understanding that the film will be
grainy/uncomfortable for the
viewer to look at. The background
looks almost tea-stained and
represents the haunting style of the
film and poster.
The following of professional
industry standard conventions
such as; the credits laid out in this
way, the laurel leaves, the reviews
and the quality of the overall
product reflects that the style of
film will be professional industry
standard.
The use of the Polaroid's give
insight into the film content
itself and allows the audience
to understand that the style of
the film will be dark, eerie and
creepy.
The poster is presented very mysteriously as there is no character
shown and creates anonymity and mystery, which reflect the style of
the film in being very mysterious throughout.
HOW DOES MY POSTER INFORM MY AUDIENCE ABOUT MY
FILM?
The finger prints inform my audience
that a criminal offense could happen
and creates mystery.
The tagline tells the audience that
lying will big a big part of the film and
also with the combination of
Polaroid’s it tells them that a camera
will be a big part in this.
The polaroid's inform my
audience with actual film
content and shows that
polaroid's will be used and the
type of locations to expect in the
film – informing my audience
that due to the locations and the
dark grainy aesthetic it will be a
dark and eerie film.
This review tells the audience
that it will be a tense thriller
with an unforgettably creepy
ending.
The colour palette explores dull
and dreary colours that are often
used in thrillers and social
realism products, therefore
informing my audience that it
will be a product of those
genres.
The polaroid’s represent the type
of person that the protagonist is,
as polaroid’s were once popular
but is now more of a niche, which
links to the guys identity as he is
very particular and therefore adds
to the tense mystery of his
identity.
There is no character shown and this creates anonymity and mystery,
which informs the audience about the film being very mysterious
throughout, as well as representing the protagonist as anonymous.
HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES MY POSTER PROMOTE MY
SHORT FILM?
The poster promotes it well with
the use of reviews highly
recommend the film with 4 and 5
star ratings and also the use of
vocabulary attracts a mainstream
audience as well as a more media
intelligent audience. The reviews
also gives a small insight towards
the type of style and genre that the
film will be and what they can
expect from the product as words
like creepy, tense and outstanding
allow my audience to understand it
will be a good quality product.
What works effectively is that
it’s not over cluttered and
therefore allows the audience
to decode all the information
without being overwhelmed
with pointless information –
allowing it to be eye catching
as well as informative.
The secrecy involved in the
poster promotes the short well
as all images are of locations and
there is no sign of a character, so
this creates mystery and intrigue
for the audience to want to
know more.
The use of following professional conventions such as credits,
laurel leaves, reviews etc. effectively promote my short as a
professional product.
The use of the finger print creates a subtle change in the title
which sparks interest to the viewer and allows them to
internally direct a suspected story line within their head.
The laurel leaves and reviews
allow the audience to
understand that it is of
professional reputable quality.
The types of awards that are
presented on the poster allow
the primary target audience to
understand it is a product of
the independent genre/market
and therefore more appealing
to them.
WHAT PRECONCEPTIONS DOES THE POSTER DEVELOP IN
THE MIND OF THE VIEWER ABOUT THE FILM?
Preconceptions from the finger
prints in the poster develop
ideas for the viewer that a
criminal offense could happen
and adds a sense of mystery.
Preconceptions of cameras being
a big part of the film can be
formed due to the mixture of the
tag-line and the main pictures.
Predominantly polaroid's being a
big part of the film as the use of
them on the poster allows the
audience to assume this. The audience will have a
preconception that the film will be a
tense thriller and a creepy ending
due to this review.
The viewer will create
preconceptions that the film will
be set in an abandoned road or
upper class house due to the
content of the polaroid's.
Due to the awards, laurel leaves
and reviews the audience can
develop views that the film will be
a good quality product.
There is no character shown and this creates anonymity and mystery,
which preconceives ideas about the film being very mysterious, as
well as the protagonist being potentially anonymous.
The Polaroid's allow
preconceptions of content
in the film as it shows the
location of the film and also
the type of mood that the
film will have.
The use of unknown actor names
on the poster shows that the film
could be using untrained actors as
social realist films are known for
this.
SHORT FILM
WHAT KEY THEMATIC ELEMENTS ARE COMMON TO BOTH
THE MAIN AND ANCILLARY TASKS? HOW ARE THESE
EXPLORED/REPRESENTED DIFFERENTLY IN EACH?
Both the review and the poster are here to represent my short and lure in the audience to invite them to want to
know more by giving them important tactical information so that they feel intrigued enough to watch the film.
Key thematic elements
explored and represented
in the review are isolation,
entrapment, love,
violence, appearance vs.
reality, stalking, stranger
danger and more. The
magazine review shows a
personal and impersonal
detailed critic of the film
to allow the audience an
understanding as well as
being provided with a
reputable opinion.
Key thematic elements explored
and represented in the poster
are isolation, entrapment,
criminality, violence,
appearance vs. reality, stalking
and more. The poster doesn’t
provide as many as the
magazine review as it acts as a
gate way to provide a quick
intriguing representation of the
film so that the audience will be
attracted to it and also provide
them with small doses of
information about the film.
Key thematic elements explored and represented in the main task are isolation, entrapment, love, violence,
appearance vs. reality, stalking, stranger danger, strong vs. weak, dominance vs. vulnerability, freedom vs.
imprisonment, privacy and more, these are all shown through the use of dialogue, costume, props, angles, lighting
and other technical elements.
DO THE REVIEW AND POSTER CONVEY/COMMUNICATE THE
SAME MESSAGE/MEANING AS THE FILM OR DO THEY MEDIATE
NARRATIVE/CHARACTERISATION ELEMENTS?
The review goes into depth in detail on the
themes and issues, message and meaning
and narrative of the film, compared to the
poster that entices and lures the audience
into the film through its eye-catching
images and aesthetic. So there is a slight
different in communication between the
two, but they still represent the same
message just in different forms to attract
two different audiences. The poster attracts
the unaware, whereas the magazine
attracts the uninformed. As after the
audience has seen the poster they will
possibly want to be informed with a
reputable opinion and detailed information
– therefore searching for a review.
The difference between the two is that the poster advertises short and powerful bits of information to intrigue an
audience that it comes off as slightly ambiguous - especially since I have chosen to create mystery within the poster
by not including a character in the visuals. Whereas the review provides direct information that targets the key
questions for the audience. Therefore they do convey and communicate the same message but with the posters use
of mystery it comes off as slightly ambiguous, but nevertheless understandable and intriguing.
HOW DO MY ANCILLARY TASKS IMPACT ON MY MAIN PRODUCT?
The two media products combine together; the poster includes two highly
rated review quotations to inform the audience of the quality and what they
can expect to receive from the product and the magazine review provides a
The impact of the ancillary tasks is the advertisement of my product
by luring the audience in with an aesthetically pleasing and
mysteriously enticing poster and keeping them interested and
informed with the use of a highly detailed and reputably rated
magazine review.
detailed description of the product and
director before finally ending with an
informative opinion. The products work well
together by the representations seen in them
as they both include images that contain low
key lighting and explore key themes and
issues of freedom vs. imprisonment,
entrapment and isolation.
ARE MY ANCILLARY TASKS A CLEAR REFLECTION OF MY MAIN
PRODUCT?
Visually the poster is a clear reflection of my main
product with the clear use of film content and also
the use of location as this gives the audience an
insight to specific elements of the main product.
FILM POSTER
“Tense throughout with
an unforgettably creepy
ending” reflects the
style of the main
productproduct and also hints towards the sub genre
being thriller. The review being from an
organization named The Beacon Gazette also
shows that it is an independent film as
independent companies are supporting/reviewing
it.
The content included in
the magazine review
explores the numerous
themes and issues of
the film, stylistic
elements and touches
on the narrative and
plot, which reflects the
main product by
informing the audience
of content of the film.
It also talks about the
director and previous
achievements which
shows a clear reflection
on the quality and style
of film as well as the
genregenre. The use of a Sight & Sound styled magazine review
reflects that the main product will be aimed towards a niche
audience that is looking for less mainstream films and
therefore reflecting that the main product is an independent
film. Finally, the use of vocabulary in the review and poster
is of media specific language that relates to a much more
media educated target audience and therefore reflects the
type of media product that it is and can be assumed that it’s
aiming itself at a niche audience of social realism.
The use of distorted texture in
the background, the decayed
texture on the title, a grainy
texture from the Polaroid's
and the ripped newspaperthe ripped newspaper all connote stylistic elements
of the thriller genre as well as representing key
themes and issues of clarity vs. distortion,
appearance vs. reality, violence, distress, pain, harm
and weakness.
HOW DO THE REVIEW AND POSTER REFERENCE ONE
ANOTHER TO
PROMOTE/DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING/INTRODUCE EXTRA
LAYERS OF MEANING INTO THE FILM?
The use of this subtle fingerprint on the
Polaroid is to add detail and deepen the
meaning behind the poster; as in the film, this
image is property of the protagonist and
therefore adds suspicions to whether this had
been another similar experience of his where
he has got a image of the victims house – which
allows the audience to understand a bit more
about his mysterious identity and intentions.
The unveiling of the film
title creates layers
towards the short as the
audience is introduced to
the idea behind the ending being interpreted by solely
themselves as there is no clear identity or intentions to
the protagonist and also the introduction of an
inspirational quote towards the film. Finally, the
review also promotes a deeper understanding of the
film as it thereveals more inspiration
towards the plot and meaning.
WHAT STYLISTIC ELEMENTS ARE COMMON TO BOTH THE
MAIN AND ANCILLARY TASKS?
The stylistic choice of minimalism has
been adopted in the magazine review,
poster and main task as I have chosen to
represent the protagonist as minimalistic
with an almost anonymous identity.
The choice of the location used in the Polaroid's and
the film is stylistically eerie, dark and mysterious to
connote the type of mood and feel that I feel matches
the narrative.
The use of little text in the title and tagline is a similar
stylistic element to the dialogue used in the narrative
as I chose to represent dominantly through the visuals.
REVIEW
During the middle of the review, it includes a
narrative of the film without revealing too many
spoilers. Introducing key themes and issues,
character identities and stylistic elements etc. It also
includes film content with the use of the Polaroid
imagery of the location used in the film, as well as a
picture of a Polaroid prop found my Girl in the film.
There is also a synopsis to give the audience a clear,
structured understanding of the film.
HOW DOES MY REVIEW INFORM MY AUDIENCE ABOUT MY FILM?
In the first paragraph of the review, it informs the audience that the film will be
a product of the social realism genre, as well as having a sub genre of thriller. It
also informs the audience that the film is directed by a proven and successful
filmmaker before finally introducing a brief outline of the film and interpreting
the meaning of the title.
This paragraph
informs the audience
that a popular quote
has inspired the film
as well as revealing
part of the narrative.
Finally the review ends
with an informative
opinion on the
message/meaning of the
film, as well as an opinion
from a reputable
magazine reviewer, so
that the audience can
rely on the quality of the
opinion.
HOW DOES THE WAY THAT THE REVIEW ATTRACTS AN
AUDIENCE TO MY FILM DIFFER FROM THE WAY THAT MY
POSTER DOES? (DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSES)
The difference between the two is that the poster
advertises short and powerful bits of information to
intrigue an audience and comes off as slightly
ambiguous - especially since I have chosen to create
mystery within the poster by not including a
character in the visuals. Whereas the review
provides direct information that targets the key
questions for the audience.
The review goes into depth in detail on the themes and issues, message and meaning and narrative of the
film, compared to the poster that entices and lures the audience into the film through its eye-catching
images and aesthetic. So there is a slight different in the attraction between the two, but they still advertise
the same message just in different forms to attract two different audiences. The poster attracts the unaware
audience, whereas the magazine attracts the uninformed audience. As after they have seen the poster they
will possibly want to be informed with a reputable opinion and detailed information – therefore searching
for a review.
IS MY REVIEW IN ANY WAY BIASED AND WHAT MIGHT
BE THE IMPACT OF THIS BE?
The review is potentially biased as there is an
imbalance between the constructive criticism and
the review speaking very highly of the director
without questioning any potential problems
towards his previous work or the work of In Your
Eyes. The potential impact of this could be that
the audience doesn’t agree with the review and
therefore the magazine company looses their
reputation and the quality of their product
suffers. As well as this, the film could be impacted
with the problem of bad publicity due to the
outrage of unhappy consumers.
FROM READING THE REVIEW WHAT DO WE LEARN/UNDERSTAND
ABOUT THE GENRE OF/AUDIENCE FOR/DIRECTORS RATIONALE BEHIND
THE FILM?
In the first paragraph of the review, we learn
that the genre of the film is social realism and
sub genre thriller, that fans of the director
Myles Egan will definitely be interested in his
newest product In Your Eyes, an idea of the
rationale behind the film title and a brief
description of the narrative of the film.
This paragraph
informs the audience
of the directors
potential rationale
for the film title.
Finally the review ends with
an informative opinion on
the director rationale
behind the meaning and
message of the film.

Evaluation 2

  • 3. FROM LOOKING AT THE POSTER WHAT DO WE LEARN/UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE STYLE OF/GENRE AND OF/AUDIENCE FOR THE FILM? The finger prints suggest that the style of film is creepy and eerie – therefore understand the style and possibly a genre of thriller. From looking at the poster, we can understand that it is a product of the social realism genre due to the dull and dreary colour palette. The polaroid's and finger prints allow the consumer to understand that it is also a product of the thriller genre as it creates a dark side to it and suggests that there could be a conviction in the film. The tag line tells the audience that the genre could be thriller as the phrase ‘the camera never lies’ has been changed to ‘the camera always lies’ and because of the twist on a common phrase this creates a dark and eerie presence. The choice of wording in the reviews suggests that the product could be aimed at a mainstream audience as the vocabulary is suitable to all intelligence, compared to the usual social realism products that will use vocabulary such as: poignant, profound and mesmerising. The use of texture in the title, Polaroid's and background reflect stylistic elements of decay and allow the audience interpret this into the genre social realism. The laurel leaves symbolise that the style of the film is a professional product and by the names of the awards, it is clear that is for an independent audience. The eerie and secretive locations in the Polaroid's are film content and therefore inform the style of location to the audience.
  • 4. HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES THE POSTER REFLECT/REPRESENT THEMES AND ISSUES OF THE FILM? The polaroid’s shown are very eerie, empty and hidden and don’t have a clear focus – this shows the protagonists minimalistic identity that could be mistaken for a hidden personality and anonymity and also his unclear intentions; therefore representing the theme of appearance vs. reality. The Polaroid’s also show the issue of people watching and people being watched; the right to look and the right to not be looked at, which is a key theme in my film as the guy’s intentions seem completely harmless until he has a physical photograph of the girl and this could be considered as crossing the line. The finger print also represents the issue of violence in the film as finger prints are often linked to criminal behaviour and therefore the audience can expect violence within the film. The polaroid's of the roads show the trees hanging over the top of the photo and represents the issues of entrapment and isolation in the film. The tag line represents the theme of appearance vs. reality as it shows that there will be lying involved in the film. The poster is presented very mysteriously as there is no character shown and creates anonymity and mystery, which reflect the issue of anonymity
  • 5. HOW FAR AND HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES THE POSTER REFLECT THE STYLE OF THE FILM? The textures used in the title, background and also the use of Polaroid's as it creates a natural grain reflects the roughness and decayed feeling to the story and aesthetics within the film. Due to the dull and dreary colours the audience can understand that it is a product of the social realism genre as the social realism genre is renowned for this. Also, that there is potentially a creepy, thriller side to the product with the use of the polaroid’s, finger prints and locations used in the images and the colours of these as they look very haunting due to the empty eerie spaces and vintage aesthetic. The use of the grainy texture in the background of the poster represents a certain aesthetic commonly used in scary and thriller movies as this gives an understanding that the film will be grainy/uncomfortable for the viewer to look at. The background looks almost tea-stained and represents the haunting style of the film and poster. The following of professional industry standard conventions such as; the credits laid out in this way, the laurel leaves, the reviews and the quality of the overall product reflects that the style of film will be professional industry standard. The use of the Polaroid's give insight into the film content itself and allows the audience to understand that the style of the film will be dark, eerie and creepy. The poster is presented very mysteriously as there is no character shown and creates anonymity and mystery, which reflect the style of the film in being very mysterious throughout.
  • 6. HOW DOES MY POSTER INFORM MY AUDIENCE ABOUT MY FILM? The finger prints inform my audience that a criminal offense could happen and creates mystery. The tagline tells the audience that lying will big a big part of the film and also with the combination of Polaroid’s it tells them that a camera will be a big part in this. The polaroid's inform my audience with actual film content and shows that polaroid's will be used and the type of locations to expect in the film – informing my audience that due to the locations and the dark grainy aesthetic it will be a dark and eerie film. This review tells the audience that it will be a tense thriller with an unforgettably creepy ending. The colour palette explores dull and dreary colours that are often used in thrillers and social realism products, therefore informing my audience that it will be a product of those genres. The polaroid’s represent the type of person that the protagonist is, as polaroid’s were once popular but is now more of a niche, which links to the guys identity as he is very particular and therefore adds to the tense mystery of his identity. There is no character shown and this creates anonymity and mystery, which informs the audience about the film being very mysterious throughout, as well as representing the protagonist as anonymous.
  • 7. HOW EFFECTIVELY DOES MY POSTER PROMOTE MY SHORT FILM? The poster promotes it well with the use of reviews highly recommend the film with 4 and 5 star ratings and also the use of vocabulary attracts a mainstream audience as well as a more media intelligent audience. The reviews also gives a small insight towards the type of style and genre that the film will be and what they can expect from the product as words like creepy, tense and outstanding allow my audience to understand it will be a good quality product. What works effectively is that it’s not over cluttered and therefore allows the audience to decode all the information without being overwhelmed with pointless information – allowing it to be eye catching as well as informative. The secrecy involved in the poster promotes the short well as all images are of locations and there is no sign of a character, so this creates mystery and intrigue for the audience to want to know more. The use of following professional conventions such as credits, laurel leaves, reviews etc. effectively promote my short as a professional product. The use of the finger print creates a subtle change in the title which sparks interest to the viewer and allows them to internally direct a suspected story line within their head. The laurel leaves and reviews allow the audience to understand that it is of professional reputable quality. The types of awards that are presented on the poster allow the primary target audience to understand it is a product of the independent genre/market and therefore more appealing to them.
  • 8. WHAT PRECONCEPTIONS DOES THE POSTER DEVELOP IN THE MIND OF THE VIEWER ABOUT THE FILM? Preconceptions from the finger prints in the poster develop ideas for the viewer that a criminal offense could happen and adds a sense of mystery. Preconceptions of cameras being a big part of the film can be formed due to the mixture of the tag-line and the main pictures. Predominantly polaroid's being a big part of the film as the use of them on the poster allows the audience to assume this. The audience will have a preconception that the film will be a tense thriller and a creepy ending due to this review. The viewer will create preconceptions that the film will be set in an abandoned road or upper class house due to the content of the polaroid's. Due to the awards, laurel leaves and reviews the audience can develop views that the film will be a good quality product. There is no character shown and this creates anonymity and mystery, which preconceives ideas about the film being very mysterious, as well as the protagonist being potentially anonymous. The Polaroid's allow preconceptions of content in the film as it shows the location of the film and also the type of mood that the film will have. The use of unknown actor names on the poster shows that the film could be using untrained actors as social realist films are known for this.
  • 10. WHAT KEY THEMATIC ELEMENTS ARE COMMON TO BOTH THE MAIN AND ANCILLARY TASKS? HOW ARE THESE EXPLORED/REPRESENTED DIFFERENTLY IN EACH? Both the review and the poster are here to represent my short and lure in the audience to invite them to want to know more by giving them important tactical information so that they feel intrigued enough to watch the film. Key thematic elements explored and represented in the review are isolation, entrapment, love, violence, appearance vs. reality, stalking, stranger danger and more. The magazine review shows a personal and impersonal detailed critic of the film to allow the audience an understanding as well as being provided with a reputable opinion. Key thematic elements explored and represented in the poster are isolation, entrapment, criminality, violence, appearance vs. reality, stalking and more. The poster doesn’t provide as many as the magazine review as it acts as a gate way to provide a quick intriguing representation of the film so that the audience will be attracted to it and also provide them with small doses of information about the film. Key thematic elements explored and represented in the main task are isolation, entrapment, love, violence, appearance vs. reality, stalking, stranger danger, strong vs. weak, dominance vs. vulnerability, freedom vs. imprisonment, privacy and more, these are all shown through the use of dialogue, costume, props, angles, lighting and other technical elements.
  • 11. DO THE REVIEW AND POSTER CONVEY/COMMUNICATE THE SAME MESSAGE/MEANING AS THE FILM OR DO THEY MEDIATE NARRATIVE/CHARACTERISATION ELEMENTS? The review goes into depth in detail on the themes and issues, message and meaning and narrative of the film, compared to the poster that entices and lures the audience into the film through its eye-catching images and aesthetic. So there is a slight different in communication between the two, but they still represent the same message just in different forms to attract two different audiences. The poster attracts the unaware, whereas the magazine attracts the uninformed. As after the audience has seen the poster they will possibly want to be informed with a reputable opinion and detailed information – therefore searching for a review. The difference between the two is that the poster advertises short and powerful bits of information to intrigue an audience that it comes off as slightly ambiguous - especially since I have chosen to create mystery within the poster by not including a character in the visuals. Whereas the review provides direct information that targets the key questions for the audience. Therefore they do convey and communicate the same message but with the posters use of mystery it comes off as slightly ambiguous, but nevertheless understandable and intriguing.
  • 12. HOW DO MY ANCILLARY TASKS IMPACT ON MY MAIN PRODUCT? The two media products combine together; the poster includes two highly rated review quotations to inform the audience of the quality and what they can expect to receive from the product and the magazine review provides a The impact of the ancillary tasks is the advertisement of my product by luring the audience in with an aesthetically pleasing and mysteriously enticing poster and keeping them interested and informed with the use of a highly detailed and reputably rated magazine review. detailed description of the product and director before finally ending with an informative opinion. The products work well together by the representations seen in them as they both include images that contain low key lighting and explore key themes and issues of freedom vs. imprisonment, entrapment and isolation.
  • 13. ARE MY ANCILLARY TASKS A CLEAR REFLECTION OF MY MAIN PRODUCT? Visually the poster is a clear reflection of my main product with the clear use of film content and also the use of location as this gives the audience an insight to specific elements of the main product. FILM POSTER “Tense throughout with an unforgettably creepy ending” reflects the style of the main productproduct and also hints towards the sub genre being thriller. The review being from an organization named The Beacon Gazette also shows that it is an independent film as independent companies are supporting/reviewing it. The content included in the magazine review explores the numerous themes and issues of the film, stylistic elements and touches on the narrative and plot, which reflects the main product by informing the audience of content of the film. It also talks about the director and previous achievements which shows a clear reflection on the quality and style of film as well as the genregenre. The use of a Sight & Sound styled magazine review reflects that the main product will be aimed towards a niche audience that is looking for less mainstream films and therefore reflecting that the main product is an independent film. Finally, the use of vocabulary in the review and poster is of media specific language that relates to a much more media educated target audience and therefore reflects the type of media product that it is and can be assumed that it’s aiming itself at a niche audience of social realism.
  • 14. The use of distorted texture in the background, the decayed texture on the title, a grainy texture from the Polaroid's and the ripped newspaperthe ripped newspaper all connote stylistic elements of the thriller genre as well as representing key themes and issues of clarity vs. distortion, appearance vs. reality, violence, distress, pain, harm and weakness. HOW DO THE REVIEW AND POSTER REFERENCE ONE ANOTHER TO PROMOTE/DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING/INTRODUCE EXTRA LAYERS OF MEANING INTO THE FILM? The use of this subtle fingerprint on the Polaroid is to add detail and deepen the meaning behind the poster; as in the film, this image is property of the protagonist and therefore adds suspicions to whether this had been another similar experience of his where he has got a image of the victims house – which allows the audience to understand a bit more about his mysterious identity and intentions. The unveiling of the film title creates layers towards the short as the audience is introduced to the idea behind the ending being interpreted by solely themselves as there is no clear identity or intentions to the protagonist and also the introduction of an inspirational quote towards the film. Finally, the review also promotes a deeper understanding of the film as it thereveals more inspiration towards the plot and meaning.
  • 15. WHAT STYLISTIC ELEMENTS ARE COMMON TO BOTH THE MAIN AND ANCILLARY TASKS? The stylistic choice of minimalism has been adopted in the magazine review, poster and main task as I have chosen to represent the protagonist as minimalistic with an almost anonymous identity. The choice of the location used in the Polaroid's and the film is stylistically eerie, dark and mysterious to connote the type of mood and feel that I feel matches the narrative. The use of little text in the title and tagline is a similar stylistic element to the dialogue used in the narrative as I chose to represent dominantly through the visuals.
  • 17. During the middle of the review, it includes a narrative of the film without revealing too many spoilers. Introducing key themes and issues, character identities and stylistic elements etc. It also includes film content with the use of the Polaroid imagery of the location used in the film, as well as a picture of a Polaroid prop found my Girl in the film. There is also a synopsis to give the audience a clear, structured understanding of the film. HOW DOES MY REVIEW INFORM MY AUDIENCE ABOUT MY FILM? In the first paragraph of the review, it informs the audience that the film will be a product of the social realism genre, as well as having a sub genre of thriller. It also informs the audience that the film is directed by a proven and successful filmmaker before finally introducing a brief outline of the film and interpreting the meaning of the title. This paragraph informs the audience that a popular quote has inspired the film as well as revealing part of the narrative. Finally the review ends with an informative opinion on the message/meaning of the film, as well as an opinion from a reputable magazine reviewer, so that the audience can rely on the quality of the opinion.
  • 18. HOW DOES THE WAY THAT THE REVIEW ATTRACTS AN AUDIENCE TO MY FILM DIFFER FROM THE WAY THAT MY POSTER DOES? (DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSES) The difference between the two is that the poster advertises short and powerful bits of information to intrigue an audience and comes off as slightly ambiguous - especially since I have chosen to create mystery within the poster by not including a character in the visuals. Whereas the review provides direct information that targets the key questions for the audience. The review goes into depth in detail on the themes and issues, message and meaning and narrative of the film, compared to the poster that entices and lures the audience into the film through its eye-catching images and aesthetic. So there is a slight different in the attraction between the two, but they still advertise the same message just in different forms to attract two different audiences. The poster attracts the unaware audience, whereas the magazine attracts the uninformed audience. As after they have seen the poster they will possibly want to be informed with a reputable opinion and detailed information – therefore searching for a review.
  • 19. IS MY REVIEW IN ANY WAY BIASED AND WHAT MIGHT BE THE IMPACT OF THIS BE? The review is potentially biased as there is an imbalance between the constructive criticism and the review speaking very highly of the director without questioning any potential problems towards his previous work or the work of In Your Eyes. The potential impact of this could be that the audience doesn’t agree with the review and therefore the magazine company looses their reputation and the quality of their product suffers. As well as this, the film could be impacted with the problem of bad publicity due to the outrage of unhappy consumers.
  • 20. FROM READING THE REVIEW WHAT DO WE LEARN/UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE GENRE OF/AUDIENCE FOR/DIRECTORS RATIONALE BEHIND THE FILM? In the first paragraph of the review, we learn that the genre of the film is social realism and sub genre thriller, that fans of the director Myles Egan will definitely be interested in his newest product In Your Eyes, an idea of the rationale behind the film title and a brief description of the narrative of the film. This paragraph informs the audience of the directors potential rationale for the film title. Finally the review ends with an informative opinion on the director rationale behind the meaning and message of the film.
