Spectrum was proud to recently have acquired four chickens which they are raising on their grounds. Staff say the chickens will teach the students about responsibility as well as urban agriculture. I was lucky enough to receive one of the first chicken eggs from the students as a gift. The egg happened to be blue., but I ’ve been assured that the colouring is perfectly natural. 13-06-18
On Wednesday, February 20, a CBC producer and cameraman trekked down to Van Tech to award two lucky students red “student reporter” jackets. Emily and Amy will join a number of other VSB students as CBC student reporters who will cover a wide range of topics on CBC Newsday on March 27. 13-06-18
On Friday February 22, Red River Jig Dancers performed as part of Van Tech ’s Talking Stick Festival. Students from Van Tech and its elementary family of schools joined the dancers on stage for some lessons. 13-06-18
On Monday, February 25, I visited with some incredibly bright and articulate students at Tecumseh Elementary. The students were enrolled in our Multi-Age Cluster Class for gifted students. I was also fortunate to meet and chat with Marie Chomyn, who is one of the winners of this year ’s Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. 13-06-18
There was an enormous number of activities happening on Pink Day across the Vancouver School District last week. School events planned included (among many other things): flashmobs school assemblies mainstreeting with the entire school community school and class skits live-theatre performances around the origins of Pink Day choreographed dancing routines busking a basketball game against Vancouver Police Department officers the hanging of a huge pink banner Pink Day poetry reading the design and sale of special Pink Day t-shirts to raise money for local charities the sale of special baked goods to raise money for charity 13-06-18
Total Ed postponed their Pink Day celebrations till last Friday, March 1. The Students turned out in fine form, dressed up in pink costumes and participated in dancing, t-shirt making and trivia (among other activities) to honour Acceptance. Total Ed has one of the largest per-capita GSAs in the VSB. 13-06-18

On Friday, March 1, the annual Vancouver District Science Fair (VDSF) took place at Langara College. This year, Langara College and the Vancouver School Board partnered for one of the largest science fairs in Canada, which attracted 270 students between Grades 7-12 from roughly 30 different schools. An estimated 120 projects were showcased. 13-06-18
On Friday, March 1, Churchill Synergy students dimmed the lights of the school ’s cafeteria and belted out show tunes as part of a “busking” fundraiser for Pink Week. 13-06-18
