This document defines and describes different types of nouns:
1) Nouns are names of people, places, or things and are divided into concrete and abstract nouns.
2) Concrete nouns refer to material things and include proper nouns, common nouns, collective nouns, and material nouns.
3) Abstract nouns refer to qualities, states, actions, arts, or sciences that have no physical existence.

2. NOUNS.
A noun is the name of any person; place or thing.
Eg. Gopal; Madras; Book; Knowledge
Nouns are of two types:
They are:
Concrete Nouns and
Abstract Nouns.

3. Concrete nouns denote things that exist in a material form.
These are again sub-divided into:
a) Proper Noun. b) Common Noun.
c) Collective Noun. d) Material Noun.
A proper noun is the name of some particular person or place.
Anisha is a beautiful girl. (Anisha is a proper noun)
A common noun is a noun that can be given commonly to all
things or persons of the same class or kind.
Eg. Village, school, teacher, birds

4. A collective noun denotes a number of persons, animals or
things spoken as a whole.
eg. Album, army, bundle, chain, band, course.
A noun which denotes the substance/material of which a thing
is made of is called material noun.
eg. Gold, wood, silk, clay etc.
Abstract Noun: An Abstract Noun is the name of any quality,
state or action, art or science.

5. An abstract noun denotes something that has no
existence of its own, but exists only in the mind of a
person. It is something that we can understand but
cannot demonstrate.
Eg. Whiteness, cleverness, height, walk, sight, childhood,
music, physics etc.,
Countable and Uncountable Nouns: The nouns which can
be counted are called Countable Nouns. If a noun is countable
then:

6. ‘A’ and ‘An’ can be used before countable nouns.
The question ‘how many’ is asked for countable nouns.
Numbers can be used with countable nouns.
Words like few, a few, the few, is asked for countable nouns.
Plurals are found in countable nouns.
Uncountable Nouns: The nouns which cannot be counted
are called uncountable nouns. If a noun is uncountable then:

7. We usually do not use ‘A’ or ‘An’ before it.
The question ‘How much’ is asked for it.
Numbers can not be used for it.
They normally do not have a plural.
Words like little, a little, the little, much, less are used with it.
NOTE: ‘SOME’ CAN BE USED BEFORE BOTH COUNTABLE AND
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS.
