NOUNS.

A noun is the name of any person; place or thing.
Eg. Gopal; Madras; Book; Knowledge

 Nouns are of two types:

They are:
 Concrete Nouns and

 Abstract Nouns.

    01/12/13 anr.tuni@gmail.com
 Concrete nouns denote things that exist in a material form.
These are again sub-divided into:

a) Proper Noun. b) Common Noun.
c) Collective Noun. d) Material Noun.

A proper noun is the name of some particular person or place.
Anisha is a beautiful girl. (Anisha is a proper noun)

A common noun is a noun that can be given commonly to all
things or persons of the same class or kind.

Eg. Village, school, teacher, birds

    01/12/13 anr.tuni@gmail.com
 A collective noun denotes a number of persons, animals or
things spoken as a whole.

 eg. Album, army, bundle, chain, band, course.

 A noun which denotes the substance/material of which a thing
is made of is called material noun.

 eg. Gold, wood, silk, clay etc.

 Abstract Noun: An Abstract Noun is the name of any quality,
state or action, art or science.

    01/12/13 anr.tuni@gmail.com
 An abstract noun denotes something that has no
existence of its own, but exists only in the mind of a
person. It is something that we can understand but
    cannot demonstrate.
 Eg. Whiteness, cleverness, height, walk, sight, childhood,
    music, physics etc.,

 Countable and Uncountable Nouns: The nouns which can
be counted are called Countable Nouns. If a noun is countable
    then:

    01/12/13 anr.tuni@gmail.com
 ‘A’ and ‘An’ can be used before countable nouns.

 The question ‘how many’ is asked for countable nouns.

 Numbers can be used with countable nouns.

 Words like few, a few, the few, is asked for countable nouns.

 Plurals are found in countable nouns.

 Uncountable Nouns: The nouns which cannot be counted
are called uncountable nouns. If a noun is uncountable then:

    01/12/13 anr.tuni@gmail.com
 We usually do not use ‘A’ or ‘An’ before it.

 The question ‘How much’ is asked for it.

 Numbers can not be used for it.

 They normally do not have a plural.

 Words like little, a little, the little, much, less are used with it.

 NOTE: ‘SOME’ CAN BE USED BEFORE BOTH COUNTABLE AND
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS.
