Town of Nashville Fire Department
And
Nash County Emergency Services
Public CPR Education Initiative
12. The Town of Nashville Fire Department announces the
initiation of Operation HeartBeat, a chest compression-
only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) public
education program. The community-wide initiative is
designed to improve hospital cardiac arrest survival
rates. The goal of this initiative is to reduce the
barriers preventing members of the public from being
trained in CPR and acting to revive a person suffering
from sudden cardiac arrest. Operation Heartbeat
provides compressions-only CPR training for members
of the public through businesses, civic and community
groups, churches, and individual sign-up. Nashville Fire
Department is the pilot agency of the program
designed and coordinated by Nash County Emergency
Medical Services (EMS).
13. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the single greatest
cause of death in the United States. Based on records,
more than 550,000 adult Americans die of
cardiovascular disease every year. About 330,000 of
these deaths result from sudden cardiac arrest.
Cardiac arrest usually strikes without warning. When it
hits, no matter how young or old, the victim loses
consciousness and stops breathing. Most of these
occur in the home, in the office and many other places.
Nearly all of these cases result to death. But it does
not have to be that way. According to
www.americanheart.org, death from sudden cardiac
arrest is not inevitable. When an adult suddenly
collapses, immediate chest compressions can make the
biggest difference in surviving a cardiac arrest. If more
people know CPR more lives could be saved.
14. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after
cardiac arrest can double a victim’s chance of survival.
Nearly anyone can do this and emergency responders
needed the community’s help in initiating care for
cardiac arrest patient. Everyone in Nash County is
invited to join Operation HeartBeat and take 20
minutes to learn compression-only CPR and help
dramatically increase cardiac arrest survival in our
community.
Statistics show cardiac arrest victims in Nash County
receive bystander CPR in only 15% of the cases. But,
we are optimistic that with Operation HeartBeat the
citizens of Nashville and Nash County will actively
participate in the compression-only CPR training
program because of the life-saving benefit this
provides for their family and friends.
15. Since cardiac arrest may occur anytime and at
any place, it is beneficial that our citizens have
the opportunity of learning CPR skills. The
Nashville Fire Department will be providing free
compression-only CPR educational sessions. The
sessions will be scheduled for 20-30 minutes.
This time frame removes the barrier of investing
multiple hours to attend a tradition certification
course and minimizes personnel and staffing
issues at a businesses and fits easily into a
meeting agenda or other events. Please contact
the Town of Nashville Fire Department at 252
459 3017 to schedule your group for this life-
saving training. You may also sign-up
individually.
16. Again, sudden cardiac arrest usually strikes people of
all ages without a warning. Thousands, even millions,
of Americans have died from cardiovascular disease
and sudden cardiac arrest. This is primarily because
only few are trained and know the importance of CPR.
The Town of Nashville Fire Department has set a goal
of training 5% of the town’s population and increasing
the survival rat of cardiac arrest by 5%. With the
support of the community, we will be able to surpass
this goal and save many lives. Please call today to
schedule your compression-only CPR training.
Together, we’ll make Nashville and Nash County not
just a great place to live, but also a great place to
survive cardiac arrest. The point of contact for further
information is Nashville Fire Chief Randy Goodbord.
17. Sign-up by calling the Town of Nashville
Fire Department at 252 459-3017.
