7. Common Core- Assessment:
Smarter Balanced and PARCC
More than 40 states and territories joined one of the K–
12 comprehensive assessment consortia, the
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)
or the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
A common set of college- and career-readiness
standards by states means that by 2014–15, more than
80 percent of U.S. public school students and teachers
will be focusing on the same content standards.
Assessment systems should develop assessment and
reporting tools that:
•balance summative, interim and formative testing
through an integrated system of standards, curriculum,
assessment and instruction.
•effectively gauge college and career readiness
support quick turnaround of results.
8. Common Core- Assessment Samples
2014-15 Implementation Goal
Item and Task Prototype-
In addition to SBA and PARCC, the
National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) Partnership
and the
Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Alternate Assessment System Consortium
are developing a new generation of assessments for
students with the most significant cognitive
disabilities.
The
Assessment Services Supporting English Learners Through Technology Systems (ASSETS) Consortium
is developing assessments for English-language
learners.

Meliton WARM UP INTRO KWL – Pair Share TIME: 12 minutes (for Slides 4 to 8) INTENT: To provide a reflection of what participants know and would like to learn about CCSS ______________________________________________________________________________ Ask participants to locate the CCSS KWL Chart handout. Explain the KWL Chart: K stands for what participants already K now W stands for what participants W ould like to learn L stands for what participants have L earned Ask participants to complete the first two columns on their own. You may want to ask participants to share what they would like to learn with the whole group. This will let you, as the Instructor, know the needs of your group and be able to best address them during the presentation. HANDOUTS: CCSS KWL Chart California ’s Common Core State Standards: Toolkit | Overview
There are 12 shifts that the Common Core requires of us if we are to be truly aligned with it in terms of curricular materials and classroom instruction. There are 6 shifts in Mathematics and 6 shifts in ELA/Literacy. Malcolm ELA 1-4 Brandy ELA 5-6 Students read a true balance of informational and literary texts. Students build knowledge about the world (domains/ content areas) through TEXT rather than the teacher or activities Students read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and support in the curriculum for close reading. Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text.
Writing emphasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument. Students constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like content in increasingly complex texts. Teachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. They do so in order to focus deeply on only the concepts that are prioritized in the standards. Principals and teachers carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years.
