Henry David Thoreau was an American author, philosopher, transcendentalist, naturalist, and historian. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. In Walden, Thoreau describes his experiences over two years, two months, and two days in a small cabin he built near Walden Pond in Massachusetts. He advocated living a simple life without reliance on societal rules or consumption of wealth and material goods. He felt nature was more uplifting than society and advocated observing nature to gain a deeper understanding of life.
