A. Latar Belakang
• Atom (satuan dasar materi) → inti atom + elektron-
elektron yang mengelilinginya
• Inti atom → proton + neutron, yang padanya
bekerja gaya inti dan gaya elektrostatik
• Ketika jumlah proton lebih besar daripada jumlah
neutron, pada keadaan inilah gaya elektrostatik
jauh lebih besar dari gaya inti sehingga ikatan
atom-atom menjadi lemah dan inti berada dalam
keadaan yang tidak stabil
• Pada unsur-unsur radioaktif yang tidak stabil akan
mengalami pemancaran sinar radioaktif (meluruh)
secara spontan yang dilakukan oleh inti atom agar
menjadi inti atom yang stabil.

Teori Gamow, Gurney, dan Condon
(Tinjauan Mekanika Kuantum)
Inti berat secara prinsip, dengan
spontan tereduksi melalui
peluruhan alfa, pertanyaannya
adalah bagaimana partikel alfa
dapat meloloskan diri dari dalam
inti.
Gamow, dan Gurney bersama
Condon (1928), secara terpisah
berhasil menjelaskan peristiwa
peluruhan alfa dengan
menggunakan perhitungan
mekanika kuantum.

 Tinjauan mekanika gelombang ini memberikan
deskripsi bahwa, partikel alfa ini terikat oleh
gaya inti, akan tetapi ia bebas bergerak di
dalamnya secara bolak-balik menumbuk
dinding inti, seolah-olah seperti partikel yang
terperangkap dalam sumur potensial yang
tinggi, yang secara klasik partikel tersebut tidak
mungkin dapat keluar dari sumur. Satu-satunya
cara untuk lolos adalah dengan jalan
menerobos dinding sumur.
 Diprediksikan bahwa semakin besar energi
kinetik alfa dan semakin sering menumbuk
dinding maka semakin besar peluang alfa
untuk lolos. Hal ini berarti bahwa peluang
terjadinya peluruhan alfa bergantung pada
tenaga kinetik alfa.
