9. Doctors knew little about the workings of the Human body
Dissection (cutting up of corpses) banned by the Pope – no
chance for doctors to learn
Doctors had to rely on ancient Greek writings to understand
the body – much of their writing was wrong
Andreas Vesalius – began dissecting bodies to see how they
worked – his ideas helped start modern medicine

Discovered that all objects fall at same rate – even if they are
different weights
Designed a very effective telescope, used it to observe the
planets
Agreed with Copernicus that Earth moved around the sun
Catholic Church disagreed – Galileo was condemned as a
Heretic (someone who disagreed with church teaching)
