  This communication encourages
every member to become an active,
   engaged participant in the
   organization.
Characteristics of Social Media:

                 • Social media websites are free, web-
based services that build online communities

 Facebook is a social networking site that was
originally intended for college students, but today
  anyone can join the network.

 Its’ purpose remains the same -- giving people a
way to share information in an easy and
  entertaining way.

 Post news articles of interest to members, forum
for great conversation about education issues.

 You will also have non-members in your network.
Blogging

•Online journaling that focuses on a particular interest
•Don’t need technical knowledge as sites use templates
•The blogger uses a conversational style with a distinct personality
& voice
•If a blogger is representing an association, they must align their
philosophy
•Great space to post biting commentary about issues in your state’s
education landscape. Make sure that one person takes this task.
Read many blog sites prior to starting your own blog.
•Remember-most people are “lurkers” & do not post, but they are
reading

Note: The recommendation for social media activity is 3 postings per week
(at least)

Safety
When used appropriately, social networking sites can be a
valuable, powerful tool for professional development, sharing
of resources, and social interaction.
But, be careful and thoughtful about the information you
share, and with whom you share it.

Most social networking sites have privacy settings to allow you
to control who can see your profile, pictures, and content.
Remember all postings with these tools are very “public”
A few simple tips to encourage social networking safety:

Think before you post
Each time you post a photograph or information on the web,
make sure you would gladly show it to the following people:

Your mother
Your students
Your superintendent

Future of Social Media?

Second Life was started in 2003 as an
online virtual world by Linden Labs in
San Francisco.

Membership is free as users create
avatars — characters that are used to
move around and interact in the virtual
world.
Second Life is a fast-growing digital
world filled with people, entertainment,
education venues, experiences and
opportunity.

LAE and NEA are currently
exploring ways in which we can
use this exciting new concept.
Three Important Concepts about
       Second Life for us:

 1. For locals and state associations:
Can save $$$ holding AR, field staff
    meetings, etc. on Second Life.

 2. For locals and state associations:
    Exciting new technology used to
    build student membership and a
tool for them to use for meetings as
    well.

 3. Exciting, Immersive Teaching
    Environment
