new nations, like the Czech Republic and Slovakia

People queing to get food and other
necessities
Closed borders for travellers and endless
controls
Very little goods to buy
Interdiction against exporting local
currency

Easier to travel
Less control
Gradually more goods to buy and cities
resembling more and more Western
European cities
Eastern capitals and other major cities
becoming very important tourist
destinations
Increase in unimployment and some
people long for the old system
