issued the Emancipation
Proclamation that freed the
slaves. He was assassinated
(killed) in 1865. We
celebrate his birthday on
February 12 with a holiday.

with his picture on the
United States Penny and
on the Five Dollar Bill.
6. THE BALD EAGLE
The Bald Eagle is the
symbol bird of the United
States of America. The Bald
Eagle represents the traits
of courage, independence,
and strength. It is a large
eagle with white-feathered
head and neck.
The Bald Eagle appears on
most of its official seals,
including the Seal of the
President of the United
States.
7. The Liberty Bell is the
bell of Independence
Hall in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. It was
rung on July 8, 1776 to
proclaim the
independence of the
United States of America
from England. It cracked
in 1835.
THE LIBERTY BELL
8. The Statue of Liberty is one of the
best known American landmarks. It
was a gift to the United States from
France to commemorate their
alliance during the American
Revolution. It is located in the New
York harbor near Ellis Island. The
statue welcomed new immigrants to
the United States who entered the
country through Ellis Island between
1892 and 1954.
The statue is 111 feet, 1 inch tall and
made from 225 tons of copper.
It was given to the people of the
United States by France on July 4,
1884 to commemorate the 100
anniversary of the American
Revolution. It was dedicated on
October 28, 1886.
THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

Independence was signed
on July 4, 1776. This is the
birthday of the United States
of America. It is generally
referred to as "Independence
Day." It is usually celebrated
with fireworks displays.

the Star-Spangled Banner, the
