2. Tip #1. Verify Credentials &
Certifications
DID YOU KNOW?
• Certification from the
American Board of Cosmetic
Surgery is particularly
important because the U.S.
government does not require
that medical practitioners
receive specialized training to
practice cosmetic surgery.
• In other words, a general
surgeon has the latitude to
begin conducting liposuction
surgeries if he or she choses
to, without additional
training.
• Ensuring that the prospective cosmetic
surgeon you’ll be working with is “Board
Certified” is extremely important.
• This certification is a guarantee that a
surgeon has met the Board’s high
standards for training, ethical practice,
and expertise.
• At your initial consultation, ask: “Are you
on the American Board of Cosmetic
Surgery?” “What year did you become
certified?”
3. Tip # 2: Discuss a Surgeon’s Years
of Experience
• How many years has a physician been practicing cosmetic surgery? This is a key
question to pose to a surgeon, as experience often lends itself to better insight,
confidence, expertise, and is an indication that a surgeon has performed well
enough on other patients to stay in business.
• Of course, younger surgeons may be just as qualified and talented, and therefore
shouldn’t be immediately discredited just for lacking experience. If a cosmetic
surgeon is starting out, ask about their educational background, residency,
and/or additional training.
• Additionally, look for cosmetic surgery practices that make information about
their surgeons’ experience and backgrounds readily available online or in the
office. Practices with truly top-tier surgeons won’t be shy about communicating
this to prospective patients.
4. Tip #3: Choose a Surgeon that
Specializes in your Procedure
• Even if a cosmetic surgeon is Board Certified and has years of experience, you’ll
still want to verify that he or she specializes in your intended procedure.
• Many cosmetic surgeons maintain areas of specialty, and not just within
categories of cosmetic surgery like face lifts, breast augmentations, and body
sculpting, but specialty within a specific type of procedural approach.
• For example, a cosmetic surgeon might specialize in the QuickTuck™ tummy
tuck, or the Aqualipo® liposuction procedure.
• For best results, take care to research the procedural approach you believe is best
suited to your goals and needs, and seek out surgeons that are leaders in that
approach.
5. Tip #4: Find a Surgeon
you Trust WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
• Honesty
• Openness
• Sincerity
• Patience
• Personal Greetings
• Active Listening
• Your cosmetic surgeon will be responsible for altering
the appearance of your body to a potentially significant
degree, affecting how you and others see yourself on a
daily basis. In short, cosmetic procedures can be “high
stakes,” and patients should therefore take their time
in getting to know a surgeon before committing.
• A surgeon's personality and demeanor are strong
indications of how successful a surgery might be.
• Does your surgeon listen to what you have to say, or
does he or she seem to force their own ideas or
perspectives upon you?
• Do they take your concerns about recovery, safety, and
expense seriously and offer genuine advice, or are they
quick to provide a brief response?
6. Tip #5: Consider Safety
Factors
• Safety should be the most important factor when selecting a cosmetic
surgeon. To help determine if the cosmetic surgeon you’re considering
meets proper safety protocol:
▫ Ask about the risk factors of your procedure.
▫ Discuss whether or not the procedure will require the use of general or local
anesthesia.
▫ Ask about a surgeon’s rate of success or patient satisfaction, and seek out ratings
and reviews from previous patients.
▫ Collect specific information about how the procedure will be conducted. What
tools/instruments will be involved? How long will it take? What is the typical
recovery time?
▫ Ask how a surgeon typically handles complications.
