Y

ou may be asking about when will your own private vehicle be equipped
with some sort of telematics system. And what its features will be.

Well, chances are most of the cars sold 2 to 5 years from now will be factoryequipped with a telematics system. I’m not just talking of top of line models. Most
models will have some sort of telematics technology onboard.
In fact, if you look at the list of car manufacturers,
you see that the biggest 14 brands account for 80%
of the cars sold today. Of those, 13 manufacturers
have already disclosed their plans for the inclusion
of telematics on board. In other words, they want to
provide a really connected car.
Now what sort of services will be available? That will
clearly vary from brand to brand and even from
model to model. But you will probably see some of
the following services in a car bought just a few years
from now:
 Safety
Programs like eCall in Europe and Contran 245 in Brazil will make it mandatory
for new cars to include an embedded GPS tracker and associated
communications modem so that in case of an accident the emergency center
will be able to locate the car quicker.
 Check-in
You will also be able to book an appointment with your garage, from the car’s
console. The garage will receive upfront the vehicle’s diagnosis which will be
sent wirelessly from the vehicle, with your permission.
 Infotainment
You will be able to browse the internet and install applications which you
commonly associate to your smartphone or tablet. Some apps will even
interact with your vehicle (locate your vehicle from a smartphone or turn AC
on).
Other features include augmented reality (useful to detect and enhance obstacles
during the night) or car to car communication (will improve traffic detection),
among others. Features like these, in parallel with the increasing adoption of the
electric vehicle, will change the way we’ll be looking at cars in the near future.

Frotcom Bulgaria’s CEO guest speaker at the Annual
Logistics Business Conference in Bulgaria
The first edition of the Annual Logistics Business Conference took place at Sofia
event center in Bulgaria, on the 31st of October 2013. Delyan Kostov, CEO of
Frotcom Bulgaria, joined the conference as a Guest Speaker.
For European fleet drivers whose
work takes them across borders in
their vehicles, November marks an
important change in inter-country
legislation. No longer will it be
possible to “get away with” speeding
on foreign motorways without fear
of being caught.

The conference focused on “Technology Trends in Logistics: Products and
Solutions” and was attended by experts from the Transports & Logistics and IT
Sectors.
Delyan Kostov’s presentation - “Frotcom, Fleet Management and Intelligent
Tracking” - touched on the evolution of the European telematics market, current
market trends, the use of Frotcom as a tool to respond to fleet managers’ needs
and how Frotcom is leading the way by introducing innovative solutions to the
market.
The presentation engaged the audience who actively interacted, posing many
questions about the subject.

From November 7th, 2013, 25 of the
28 member states of the European
Union
will
be
exchanging
information on cars and drivers, with
speeding tickets (along with
notifications of other offences)
delivered directly to the registered
address of the car, regardless of
which country this is in. It may well
be that “tourist” drivers are more
affected by the measure than
business drivers. France attracts
huge amounts of visitors by car from
Germany,
Belgium,
Italy,
Luxembourg, Spain and the UK every
year, for example, and one out of
every five vehicles “flashed” is
foreign. (...)
Other offences concerned are nonwearing of seat belts, going through
red lights, using a portable
telephone, illegal parking…
Fleet operators will need to make
sure their company car policies are
quite clear on these new points.

available from list of
vehicles

New features
CANBus, graphs and fuel sources
A set of enhancements was added in Frotcom, mainly associated to the way
CANBus, fuel data and other data is displayed on graphs in Frotcom.
This set of improvements is focused on
providing a much richer interface for the
information displayed in Vehicles > Graphs
and also on a better control of fuel.
Part of this improvement was done by
bringing the graphs from the old CANBus
folder, which has now disappeared, to
Vehicles > Graphs.
Another set of improvements targets fuel
control, through better detection of fuel
variation and a more flexible selection of
fuel information sources, in the case of
vehicles with different tanks and different
fuel level sensors.

New improvements to Frotcom app
Some improvements have also been made to the
Frotcom
application,
available
for
Android
smartphones and iPhones, allowing the exchange of
messages with your drivers through the Interact option
in the menu.
This new screen (on the left) displays the messages
sent to and received from vehicles, either through SMS,
the Garmin Navigator or a Workforce Management
terminal.
Another improvement is related to Immobilisation. If
the selected vehicle has an Immobiliser installed and
you have the correct permissions, an Immobiliser
button will be visible and tapping it will allow you to
send an immobilisation command to the device, to
activate or deactivate the immobiliser.

You can right click on the list of
vehicles on the left of Fleet > Map
and choose the Track vehicle
option from the context menu, in
a way similar to what you could
already do on top of a vehicle, on
the map.

This option will allow the selection
of a vehicle for tracking, from
Fleet > Map, even when the
corresponding
icon
is
superimposed on the fleet map, or
when the vehicle is represented
along with others, by a cluster
icon.

milling company on track
Les Moulins du Maghreb, an old milling
company in Morocco, adopted Frotcom
to manage day-to-day operations of its
distribution fleet.
Les Moulins du Maghreb, a family business born in 1927, has a long and
unparalleled expertise in modern milling. The company has a daily production
capacity of 650 tonnes, distributed over three industrial units with the flexibility
to manufacture a wide variety of flours, and thus respond to all requests and
tastes of their customers.
In the last 10 years the company’s export
business increased significantly, now
covering the Maghreb and Central Africa
area. The proximity to Casablanca’s port
and a fleet of 50 vehicles are major assets
to guarantee a cost effective distribution
of the product. As part of the continued
growth, the company began looking for a
fleet tracking solution that could improve
operational efficiency and help manage
their fleet.
After analyzing the solutions available in the market, they decided for Frotcom
which completely covers their needs.
“We were looking for a solution that could help us determine fleet operations
on a daily basis. Frotcom presented us a global fleet management solution
providing alerts and reports via email so we can run our fleet efficiently and
minimize unnecessary travel.” said Amine KORATI, fleet manager at Les
Moulins du Maghreb. “With the use of Frotcom we are now able to control
costs, enhance customer service and optimize routes and deliveries.”
