16. NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel AN INTERACTIVE AND SYNERGISTIC TANDEM TO DESIGN INNOVATIVE HANDS-ON LEARNING PRACTICES IN BIOLOGY The most motivated and skilled students , identified through selective competitions, are invited together with their teachers to set-up KITS and learning modules adapted to be transferred to their schools. Both are actors of the project. Together they develop the theoretical and practical activities to be proposed to their peers A positive reciprocal feedback

23. NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel The collaboration starts during the training courses where the different stake-holders, i.e. scientists, student and their teachers come in close contact. Scientists have agreed to mentor classroom teachers and students through these courses. TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS How to use the kits at school
31. NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel NB: All materials must be returned to CusMiBio. Mishandling, breakage or missing instruments costs will be borne by the school. All materials provided in the kit, if correctly handled, don’t pose risks and conform to safety standards. For further information, check the instructions in the kit. EACH KIT COMES WITH THE LIST OF MATERIALS
34. FISH NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel Fluorescent in situ hybridization Magnetic bars + iron beads serving as probes!! FISH is suitable for gene mapping and for the identification of small chromosomal aberrations involving a single gene, not visible by cytogenetics.
35. NYEX 2011 Conference, 13-16 March Judea, Israel HOW TO IDENTIFY SPECIFIC GENES ON CHROMOSOMES? HOW TO IDENTIFY SMALL CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATIONS INVOLVING SINGLE GENES? The use of a model simulating FISH allows the students to acquire the basic principles of this technique and to appreciate its high resolution power.

The important role biosciences play in society, human health, and in our concerns about the environment makes the deficiencies in science content knowledge very troubling. Fill THE GAP. Make them feel that they can keep up with the rapid pace of advances in life sciences and biotechnology, They are given the opportunity to transfer this knowledge using more creative and effective teaching methods. They must feel they belong to an european instiution and they have to transfer this feeling to their students
Science is not very popular among young students, a career in science is not seeen as an appealing job opportunity. They don’t have a clear idea of what it’s all about. We put them in the context of a true laboratory, in contact with researchers and their methods; they have the opportunity to experience the nature of scientific research, how scientists actively perform it, how critically they interpret results. The goal is to provide them with a more inspiring concept of scientific research, free of misconceptions and rethorics. more close to reality.
We offer Hands on activities to make them achieve a more enduring and active Knowledge/understanding and develop critical thinking skills. Direct experience in science, its methods and criticism. The Attitude of science and its method to be applied to individual behavior and lifestyle
Two step Selection (first at school and then at the University). Each year we select 30 students.
A preliminary evaluation of participating teachers indicated that the pilot project is fulfilling its primary objectives:
FISH with Human chromosome 1 telomeric probes (p = green, q = red) showing a deletion in the q telomeric region of one member of the chromosome pair
