1. The Importance of the Skeletal System
1.Framework for Shape
The skeletal system gives shape to the
body . Without the skeletal system, the
body will look like a paper kite without a
rigid frame.
2. For Support and Anchorage
The skeletal system supports the body
weight . Without the bones, you cannot
stand or sit erect.
2. The skeletal system also supports the
body by serving as a framework and
attachment for tendons, muscles, skin and
visceral organs.
The muscles in your arms remain in
your arms. Your heart and lungs remain in
your chest. Your eyes, nose, and ears
remain in your face.
This is possible because your bones
provide an anchorage on which the
different soft parts of your bodies remain
in place.
3. The skeletal system also provides
body support. Below is the chart showing
some bones and the support they provide.
BONES SUPPORT
Pelvic girdle Supports spinal column
and legs
Spinal
column
Makes body straight;
supports head
Sternum Anchorage for the ribs in
front
4. BONES SUPPORT
Femur Bears weight of upper
body
Shoulder
girdle
Supports arms
3. For Protection of Vital Organs
The skeletal system protects the body
by enclosing the vital organs such as the
brain, marrow, lungs, heart and other
internal organs.
5. Bones Vital Organs Protected
Skull brain, ears, eyes, nose
Ribs heart, lungs, internal
organs
Short and long
bones
marrow
Vertebrae Spinal cord
Pelvic girdle reproductive organs
6. 4. For Locomotion and Movement
The skeletal system permits
movement and locomotion by
responding to the contractive activities
of skeletal muscles at certain joints.
Skeletal muscles are muscles which
attached to the bones.
7. Bones Movements Allowed
Limbs walk, run, jump, carry load
Manual
phalanges
handling objects, picking
up, writing, hand
movements/flexibility
Pedal phalanges balancing weight;
flexibility of toes
Vertebrae Head and neck
movements; straight body
Axial bones head and torso movement
Hip bones/pelvis leg movements, sitting
