Umpqua bank peds cancer research award 2011
1. Pediatric Cancer Research Funding Opportunity
Thanks to the generous support of Umpqua Bank, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Doernbecher
Children's Hospital are accepting applications for the Umpqua Bank Innovation Award for Pediatric
Cancer Research. The purpose of this $10,000 award is to cultivate outstanding pediatric cancer
research by assisting in the generation of preliminary data for peer-reviewed national funding or career
development proposals. Scientific excellence will be the key review element for applications with a
priority on research that has the greatest potential to yield improvements in cancer therapy, diagnosis
or prevention.
Eligibility: Proposals for the Umpqua Bank Innovation Award for Pediatric Cancer Research will be
accepted from investigators who are faculty members within five years of their first faculty appointment
or are in a senior fellowship or post-doctoral position in transition to independent funding.
Funding Period: Twelve months
Allowable Costs: Personnel, supplies, travel, and other expenses, such as use of shared resources.
Investigator salary is allowed, but clear justification as to why it is necessary should be provided (funds
should be used principally in direct support of the research). Equipment that is essential for the study,
and is not otherwise available, may be requested.
Application Process: Applicants will submit a formal proposal that will include a cover letter addressing:
significance and innovation of the proposed research, collaborative aspects of the project, proposed
timeline for project completion, research training to date and mentorship, how this funding will further
their cancer research career, and plans for future submission. Applicants will also be asked to submit an
abstract, research proposal, project budget, biographical sketch, and letters of support.

Review of proposals and funding decision: Approximately September 15, 2011
