Celtic Clan Symbols by Olivia MacArthur
Reasons for Symbols Each clan had their own symbol or “belief in a symbol”. The following symbols listed in this presentation do not necessarily represent the clan itself, but they represent the beliefs of the clan. Some of the beliefs include courage, kindness, love, determination, tenacity, etc. Most of the symbols in the slides to come are represented by animals.
Symbol of Three This “symbol of three” represents the holy number for the Celts. The Celtic people believed that three was a “lucky number”. Everything was set in groups of three. Cat Symbol Some Celtic clans believed that cats connect the humans to the universe. The Celts believe that the cat teaches humans to that they physical world and the spiritual world are not two worlds, they are one.                Image source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/glenox/359669760/

Bee Some Celtic clans believe that the bee is a single-minded creature with an independent outlook on life. The bee is organized and helps the clan, but makes sure to take care of itself as well.  Image source: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abeja1.jpg
Butterfly Some Celtic Clans associated the butterfly with freedom and power. The Celts believed that if the butterfly was in a certain area then there would not be any negative influences or thoughts until the butterfly left.
