2. “Living Lab” in the context of an instrumented environment for observing the users, Dr.

3. Living Labs represent a user centric research methodology for sensing, validating and
refining complex solutions in multiple and evolving real life contexts stating that is an
instrumented real environment much like an in-situ scientific experiment – attributed to
Prof. William Mitchell but found no online documents.

Proposed Definition
• As a human-technology interaction innovation entity utilizing a mix of
methods, tools and principles drawn from known disciplines (design,
science, etc.) and set in a real environment and in a locale/societal scale.
• In addition, the phenomenon operates in a “multi-” mode that is evident by
its multi-stakeholders, and multi-discipline, nature which eventually leads
to a multi-method approach, and often implemented multi-culturally for
internationally collaborated Living Lab project. The phenomenon is within
the context of innovation and has multiple applications.
