Did you know it's against the law for a farmer in Oregon to raise, process and sell his or her chicken to a neighbor? Find out how you can change this.
Oregon Farmers Need Local Poultry Bill to Sell Chickens
1. It's currently against the law in Oregon for a farmer to raise, slaughter and sell his or her own chickens to a neighbor unless processed in the only USDA certified plant in the state –in Scio… That's 327 miles from La Grande. 123 miles from Bend. 226 miles from Klamath Falls. And 383 miles from Ontario.
2. Although federal law allows for local farmers to raise and process a small number of chickens themselves for direct sale to customers... Oregon doesn’t yet recognize it.
3. Solution: The local poultry bill, HB 2872… offers a safe way to get chickens to market so that you can buy fresh, delicious food from your local farmer. The Oregon House passed the bill onMarch 3rd and it's now in the Senate.
4. If factory farms are the other option, why can't we have locally raised chicken?
