Making the Sign of the Cross is
part of our Catholic Tradition. This
prayer acknowledges the fact that
we believe in the Most Holy
Trinity. Making the cross reminds
us of the crucifixion of our Savior.
I met a woman in Poland in 1975
when our family traveled to
Bialystok to meet relatives on my
Mom’s side of the family. She was
the wife of my great uncle who had
died many years before. She told
all of us that her life was spared
because of the Sign of the Cross.
Bialystok is only 8 miles from the
Russian border. During World
War II, Russian soldiers came to
the family farm and took most of
their possessions. Later the
German soldiers came. Not finding
any food for their needs they lined
up the people in the village to be
executed. My great aunt made the
sign of the cross as she prepared to
die when the German officer in
charge said: “They are not
Russians, the are Poles.” He could
tell by the way she made the Sign of
the Cross—left to right instead of
right to left. Her life and the life of
the others in the village were spared
by making the Sign of the Cross.
Truly, her prayer was answered.

Lay Ministry class 2010-2012. Do you

Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Committee for
Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Recognition Sunday
The Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Committee for Girl
Scouts and Camp Fire held their annual Girl Scout Religious
Recognition Sunday at the Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas
Seminary in Bloomfield on April 25, 2010. Msgr. Michael J.
Motta was the celebrant and presented medals to the recipients.
4 Brownies received the Family of God medal, 4 Juniors
received the I Live My Faith medal, 6 Cadettes received the
Marian medal and 3 Seniors and Ambassadors received The
Spirit Alive medal. The adult leader that was recognized by
receiving one of the adult awards is: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
medal: Judy Grimard from Sacred Heart, Suffield. Thank you
to the recipients and committee members that went above and
beyond by helping us as readers, gift bearers, altar servers and
Eucharistic Ministers. Thank you to the two talented
musicians, Cheryl and Jeff Batter. Thank you also to the color
guard from Our Lady of Pompeii, East Haven; St. Michael,
New Haven and St. Barnabas, North Haven who did such a
great job leading our flag ceremony and our Mass. For our
service project of the day, recipients were asked to bring a non-
perishable food item that will be donated to the food pantry at
the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. We are grateful to all
who participated in this project.
Angels Parish Center in Meriden. Dr. Ernie Collamati will
present “Our Children are Leading Us to God!!”. The day
begins with Registration at 9:30 am and concludes after lunch.

Theology of the Body
The National Theology of the Body Institute announces the
National Theology of the Body Congress which is scheduled
for July 28-30 in the Philadelphia area (Normandy Farm, Blue
Bell, PA). It will be the most expansive and comprehensive
gathering of Theology of the Body experts ever assembled.
The three-day event includes more than 35 seminars,
roundtable discussions, expert panels and keynote addresses
featuring leading experts discussing a wide array of Theology
of the Body-related themes and topics. For more information

“Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love”
The United States Bishops have launched a new web site –
www.foryourmarriage.org – in support of this year’s
Catechetical Sunday theme and a major activity under the
Bishops’ priority goal to strengthen marriage. The site offers
practical information and resources to engaged and married
couples. Originally launched in 2007, it has attracted over
850,000 visitors to date. The redesigned site features a news
magazine format, updated graphics and easier navigation. It
retains such popular features as About Catholic Marriage,
Daily Marriage Tips, Must-Have Conversations, and Marriage
Quizzes. It also provides a link so that people can find Catholic
marriage information locally. Earlier this year, the bishops
also launched Por Tu Matrimonio (www.portumatrimonio.org)
to encourage Spanish-speaking couples to live their marriage
more fully. The Web site offers information, resources, videos
and testimonials in Spanish. Check it out for some helpful tips
for catechesis on the sacrament of marriage.

This website was launched last year as part of a reader
competition to invite people to contribute inspirational stories
about a first communion – their own, a relative’s, or friend’s.

Roman Missal are not as urgent in Spanish as in
English. Since Spanish is a Romance language derived from
Latin, the present Mass texts in Spanish more easily follow
the Latin typical edition with a literal translation and a closer
grammatical structure.” Two examples are provided on the
USCCB website. Topics include: Questions on the revised
translation of the Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of the
Priest in the revised Order of Mass Changes in the Parts of
the People in the revised Order of Mass Resources on the
Eucharistic Prayer.
Protecting Children – Ten Points
The Catholic bishops’ expert on preventing clergy abuse of
minors, Teresa Kettelkamp, offered ten tips for child safely to
mark Child Abuse Prevention Month (April).
The ten points follow:
Sexual molestation is about the victim.
No one has the right to have access to children.
Common sense is not all that common.
Child sexual abuse can be prevented.
The residual effects of having been abused can last a lifetime
Feeling heard leads toward healing.
You cannot always predict who will be an abuser.
There are behavioral warning signs of child abusers.
People can be taught to identify grooming behavior.
Background checks work.

Catechetical Sunday
Catechetical Sunday will be celebrated on September 19th
. The
theme for this year is “Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love”
to coincide with the release of the Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on
Marriage. Catechetical Sunday materials on the theme of
marriage will be made available, online, by April 2010. The
USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis approved
for Catechetical Sunday 2011 the theme of the revised Roman
Missal.
Awards Ceremony
The annual Religious Education awards ceremony will take
place on Wednesday, May 26, 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark the
Evangelist Church in West Hartford. We will celebrate: catechist
certificates, basic Catholic Biblical School certificates (2 years),
youth ministry certificates, years of service awards, and youth/
adult awards. Make sure you get your paperwork in soon. All

The Religion Teacher
Here again is a wonderful free blog – “The Religion Teacher.”
Begun in March of 2009, the author is concentrating on
pedagogy and practical issues. Recent examples include: “How

Conference on Effective Liturgy

Intermediate Lector Workshop
An Intermediate Lector Workshop sponsored by the
Office for Divine Worship will be held on Saturday, May
22, 2010 at St. James Church in Rocky Hill from 8:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Father David J. Baranowski, Director
of the Office for Divine Worship and pastor of St. James,
Rocky Hill will be the presenter. The workshop is
intended for individuals who read at Mass on a regular
basis and individuals who train lectors. The cost of the
workshop is $10.00 per person. Advance registration is
required. The registration deadline is May 17, 2009. For
