1. Newspapers’ Target Audiences This is a PowerPoint that I put together with the help of research and my own knowledge to explore the audiences of newspapers in general. On each slide I have also linked the slides back to my newspaper pages. 13/08/2011
3. What is a target audience? A specific group of people with a target market at which the product is aimed at. The target audience. Newspapers try to target certain audiences through the linguistics and topic of stories the newspaper includes. My newspaper: I want my target audience to be of the adult, educated audience. I will do this by the articles, design and lingusistics.
4. Who are the audience of newspapers? There are many factors which vary the audience of a newspaper: Representation Values Politics Institution Values Language Genre Narrative Ideology
5. Representation It is how the audience is represented inside the newspaper by expressing their needs, interests and points of view. My newspaper: As my target audience is adult and educated, if i was to need the opinions of somebody, they would have to come from those definitives.
6. Values The quality, structure and content of a newspaper are adapted to the needs of a target audience. The target audience defines the content of the newspaper. My newspaper: the values need to be educated and intelligent in order to appeal to the educated audience.
7. Politics Most newspapers support a certain parliament party, this means the content of the newspaper will be on the side of that party. This is called ‘political stance’. An audience can be swayed to buy a newspaper because of the party they support. My newspaper: Like The Sun and The Telegraph supports the Conservatives, eventhoughi will probably not meantion it in the articles or the design, i will do the same as these two newspapers.
8. Institution Newspaper institutions are usually responsible for the production, publishing and distribution of a newspaper. The way this is done can influence how often and who buys a newspaper. My newspaper: I will be the person producing it, publishing it, and distributing it, my personal background could influence the outcome and the audience my newspaper attracts.
9. Language The linguistics of newspapers can very which demographics of an audience is to buy a newspaper. Semiotics/stereotypes can be applied when the language is either formal or informal. My newspaper: As my audience is educated, i therefore have to write in an educated manner and language which also attracts to the adult audience.
10. Genre The genre of a newspaper can depend on the content, design and opinions of the newspaper. Somebody may choose a newspaper on the content it includes. My newspaper: Even though I am not at the stage of deciding what the topic of my articles are, I would like the articles to focus on the latest news which are to do with the subject of the community the newspaper would be sold in. Relatable and relevant.
11. Narrative It is how a newspaper can be read as a text in a particular format. Has a newspaper reported its news in a certain way to support the interests of the target audience? Does the newspapers’ front page start with ‘soft’ or ‘hard’ news? My newspaper: I have not yet planned or written the articles for my newspaper, and haven't either for the posters or the radio advertisement. As my audience is going to be adult, I could get away with starting with impacting news to get them interested. Adults are more likely to be interested in news which will affect them in some way.
12. Ideology It is a set of aims, beliefs or morals a newspaper and audience shares. For example, politics has become more involved in everybody's lives over the years, therefore this topic features often in newspapers. If the newspaper and audience share views, there is some relateablity and loyalty they have towards each other.
