Inaugural Plenary
Mining and minerals have the legacy from the ancient civilization. Copper mining and smelting exist since 11 Century
A.D. in Gujarat. Due to unique geology, Gujarat is a treasure house of minerals, having 18 different deposits of
significance, including Lignite, Bauxite, Limestone, Manganese, Fluorspar, Bentonite, Clay, Silica Sand, Dolomite etc.
Among the minerals that are to be found only in Gujarat, are Agate, Chalk, Perlite and Fluorite. Gujarat is the leader in
mining of Fluorspar in the country. It has India’s largest share of Silica Sand deposits and second largest production of
bauxite, lignite, fire clay and china clay. Gujarat ranks 4th in the country in value of mineral production

Plenary II: 1400- 1550 hrs: Conservation of Mineral Resources:
Natural resources are drying up very fast and so a strong need of its conservation has come upIn view of infinite and
unreplenishable nature of mineral resources, the minerals need to be excavated in a very efficient manner. Understanding
the requirement of conserving these mineral resources a highest degree of conservation is required to be as these
mineral resources are not only for the present generation but the generations to follow.
For conservation of there is a need to Map & Estimate accurately the total quantity of Mineral resources and its
consumption pattern so that they can be mined and used conservatively and maximum extraction can be done. The
judicious use of the available minerals and scientific mineral conservation techniques should be used. This session shall
also discuss the Technologies for upgrading the Quality of Minerals with a focus on Bauxite.
