Dannon to Pay $45M to Settle Yogurt Lawsuit
(Dannon/Danone must learn from this mistake that making health claims is not that simple)
For two years Dannon has been touting Activia and DanActive yogurt products as "clinically" and
"scientifically" proven to regulate digestion and boost immune systems. The company even launched a
glossy TV ad campaign featuring actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who calls the yogurt "tasty." Yet, despite the
claims, a judge in Cleveland this week says Dannon must pay consumers up to $45 million in damages
under the terms of a class action settlement, reached in federal court. The agreement also calls for
Dannon to change its health claims for Activia and DanActive . "This is victory for just about anyone who
benefits from accuracy in food labeling," Cleveland lawyer John Climaco told ABC News. Climaco and
fellow attorney Frank Piscitelli Jr., joined with attorneys from California and Florida in winning the
settlement, which was approved by U.S. District Judge Dan Polster. "The judge agreed that the
company was making claims it simply hadn't proven," says Climaco. DanActive was introduced in
January 2007. Activia has been sold nationwide since February 2006. No other Dannon products were
involved in the court action........... Read

David Lord appointed CEO of Warrnambool Cheese & Butter (Australia)
WARRNAMBOOL Cheese & Butter has brought in industry veteran and former Parmalat Australia chief
David Lord to help with its defence from suitors Murray Goulburn Co-operative and Canada's Saputo.
Warrnambool ended almost a year of uncertainty today with Lord‘s appointment as managing director
and CEO after Neil Kearney stepped down last April. Interim CEO John McLean will hand over to Lord
in June and stay on as an associate director, the company said. But Warrnambool made no mention of
how Lord, who spent 14 years at Parmalat (seven as CEO), would play the takeover game, frustrating
both Saputo‘s adviser Rothschild and MG‘s KPMG and Corrs Chambers Westgarth. This is because
Gresham-advised Warrnambool, which again rebuffed MG‘s offer of $4.35 a share on Friday, has yet to
state a price or sit down and negotiate a deal to take Warrnambool‘s to shareholders....... Read

Avesthagen working on Rs 700-cr IPO plan (India)
Avesthagen is working up its Rs 700-crore public offer plan for the second half of this year but still
needs to raise € 22 million (around Rs 138 crore) in the interim, according to its Founder, Chairman and
Managing Director, Dr Villoo Morawala-Patell. ―[Last year] We needed € 40 million (around Rs 250 crore
by today's currency rates) till the IPO and some of it we have collected as debt and equity,‖ Dr Patell
said at a news conference called to announce a Nestle executive and two others joining the Avesthagen
board. In the coming months, the company planned to take in a private equity player, seeking project-
based funds and also ―do some more [research] licensing deals‖ to shore up its resources, Dr Patell
said. She would not divest in her 32 per cent stake during the public offer and did not favour pre-IPO
equity placements, she said........ Read

Carrefour to cut jobs, close stores in Belgium
Carrefour, the world's No. 2 retailer, said it would cut jobs and close stores in Belgium to restore
profitability in the country amid intense competition from local rivals. The plan calls for cutting 1,672 jobs
and closing 21 stores in Belgium by end-June, Carrefour Belgium said in a statement on Tuesday.
Belgian newspaper Le Soir, on its website, called the plan a "social earthquake" while Rudy Demotte,
the head of the Southern French-speaking region of Wallonia, said it was a "new shock" for the group's
staff. Carrefour maintained that the changes were needed to fix the Belgian operations, which it called
"structurally loss-making." The moves come a week after Carrefour said it was reviewing its Belgian
operations, which have struggled for years amid fierce competition from Belgian groups Delhaize and
Colruyt and discounters Aldi and Lidl. "We have performed less well than our competitors in Belgium
and have seen turnover at our hypermarkets (in Belgium) decline every year since 2004, at a time when
the market was growing", Gerard Lavinay, the CEO of Carrefour Belgium said at a news

Goodman Fielder profit jumps by 25% (H1), however shares fall amid uncertainty (Australia)
Goodman Fielder Ltd., Australia‘s largest baker, said first-half profit rose 25 percent after cutting
manufacturing expenses and adding new bread brands. Less volatile commodity prices, which reduced
the need to change selling prices, stoked profitability in baking as the company added new bread
products such as Helga‘s Seed Sensations. The company is focusing on branded products for
consumers after last year agreeing to sell its commercial oils unit to Cargill Inc. amid increased
wholesale competition. ―The business is continuing to perform solidly into the second half of the
financial year and is experiencing a more moderate commodity cost environment,‖ the company said.
The company didn‘t issue a forecast for annual earnings. The shares dropped 6.5 Australian cents, or
4.2 percent, to A$1.48 as the close of trading in Sydney. The stock gained 23 percent last year, its first
annual gain in three years...... Read

of $209 million for 2009 were up 31 percent from 2008. Earnings for 2009 benefited from $37 million of

earnings would be second only to 2008....... Read

DSM Books Q4 Net Loss, Gives No Clear Outlook
Dutch life and materials sciences group Koninklijke DSM NV Wednesday gave no clear outlook for 2010
when posting a fourth-quarter net loss--hit by exceptional items related to disposals and impairments--
but did forecast modest sales growth this year in Europe and North America and strong expansion in
Latin America and Asia, especially China. "Whilst recognizing the uneven nature of the current
economic recovery, we are cautiously optimistic over 2010," DSM Chief Executive Feike Sijbesma said
in a statement without giving details. He said the company's sales growth this year will be in line with
economic growth. Chief financial officer Rolf-Dieter Schwalb said that if the current economic climate
continues through the course of the year, DSM will not achieve its earnings before interest, tax,
depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda margin targets. DSM in 2007 said it aims to achieve an Ebitda
margin of at least 18% for its Nutrition activities, at least 19% for its Pharma activities, and an Ebitda
margin of at least 17% in Performance Materials. "We will achieve the margin target for the Nutrition
activities," Schwalb said Wednesday. Investors didn't like DSM's cautious outlook and sent its share
price lower. At 1330 GMT the shares were down 5.0% at EUR31.12. The stock has risen 72% in value
over the past 12 months, however. Board Member Nico Gerardu Wednesday said he is still confident
DSM can divest its non-core business unit Base Chemicals and Materials, which includes its Agro,
Melamine and Elastomers activities this year. "The acquisition of Yara International (YAR.OS) last week
by Terra Industries (TRA) indicates M&A activity in the chemicals sector is picking up again, which
bodes well for the selling price of our Chemicals and Materials activities," Gerardu said....... Read

Cargill sells interest in PNG oil palm plantations
CTP Holdings, a Cargill majority owned company, announced that it has signed a sales agreement to
sell its interest in oil palm plantations it owned and operated in Papua New Guinea to New Britain Palm
Oil. The sale price for the PNG plantations is US$175 million plus certain adjustments for stocks and
capital expenditure. The sales agreement covers only CTP‘s oil palm assets in PNG. CTP Holdings
continues to own and operate two oil palm plantations in Indonesia. Cargill senior vice president Paul
Conway stated, ―The strategic decision to sell our PNG assets is to allow CTP to focus its resources on
sustainably growing our Indonesian oil palm plantations. We believe there is more value for our
shareholders and customers in focusing on Indonesia. Our PNG oil palm plantations are the only
investment we have in PNG. Since no other Cargill business is actively investing in PNG at this time, we
did not have any internal synergies to increase the value of this investment.‖ New Britain Palm Oil
(NBPOL) is the largest oil palm plantation owner and operator in PNG. All of NBPOL‘s oil palm
plantations are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The CTP properties that
NBPOL has agreed to buy also are in the process of earning RSPO certification. ―We are committed to
being a major player in the global palm oil supply chain. We are currently working with small holders and
sustainably developing degraded land in Indonesia to grow our origination capabilities. Combined with
our global trading arm and refining capacity, we will be able to meet our customers‘ palm oil products
needs,‖ said Conway.

The European Prebiotics Market to Reach $1.17 Billion by 2015
The European and the US market for prebiotics is projected to reach $1.17 billion and $225.31 million
respectively by the year 2015. While the European market is driven by the expansion of prebiotic
ingredient manufacturers into new application areas such as meat and snack products, the US market is
driven by continued demand for Fructans, which is the largest product segment in the US prebiotic
market. With consumers now sure of the relationship between safe health and nutrition, and focusing
more on the need for essential ingredients in diet for improved health, and reduced risk to disease, the
market for functional foods is rapidly on the rise, especially with prebiotics segment being the essential
growth driver. The future outlook for Prebiotics market is highly encouraging given that several food
ingredient manufacturers and food processors continue to seek ways to capitalize on the growing
demand for health-oriented foods. Prebiotics is rapidly rising in popularity within the functional food
market, thanks to its vast applications in dairy products, health drinks, nutrition bars, breakfast cereals,
beverages, bakery products, meat products, mineral supplements, weight loss products, green foods,
infant food, and pet food. Concerning global health trends such as rise in number of cases such as
obesity and other ailments related to digestive system, bones and joints are fast encouraging
consumers to focus on low-carb, well-balanced and healthy diet, which in turn is driving the
unprecedented demand for prebiotics at an international level....... Read

Diabetes could put enormous burden on poor countries
Diabetes and its complications -- such as strokes and heart disease -- will place an enormous financial
burden on poorer countries in years to come, researchers warned in a report published Tuesday.
"Diabetes is moving from being a disease of developed countries to a disease in developing countries
like India and China, and this could put pressure on healthcare systems through rising healthcare
costs," said Philip Clarke, associate professor at University of Sydney's School of Public Health. Clarke
and his colleagues examined records of 11,140 patients with severe diabetes in 20 countries, including
the complications they suffered, money spent and length of hospital stays; and they found diabetes hit

Online grocery sales boom in US & UK
The UK and US are forecast to remain at the centre of the growing global market for online grocery
retailing, new research has shown, as new technology continues to change the way consumers shop. A
report published this week by just-food.com shows the UK will remain Europe‘s largest market by some
distance. By 2014, market value is forecast to reach GBP20.1bn (US$30.9bn), having more than tripled
on the levels seen in 2009. During this time, the online sector‘s share of the retail food and drinks
market is expected to increase to 4% in 2010, reaching 9.5% by 2013 and then exceeding 12% by
2014. The US market, by comparison, is expected to reach a value of US$13.55bn, which represents an
increase of almost 75% compared with levels in 2009, the report said. Although the market is forecast to
continue to experience double-digit growth rates in the region of 11-12% per year, its share of the US
retail grocery market is unlikely to rise above 2% during this time, the report claimed. Much of the
projected growth within the US market is expected to come from the anticipated spread of broadband
access across the country. The online market may also benefit from the increasing tendency of
shoppers to research products prior to purchase....... Read

Brazil, India ―key to Fairtrade‘s future‖
Brazil, India and South Africa will be central to the future growth of Fairtrade, the executive director of
UK-based charity The Fairtrade Foundation has told just-food. Harriet Lamb said a combination in those
countries of farmers selling Fairtrade produce and of a growing, more affluent middle class made such
markets key to the development of the business. Awareness of the Fairtrade mark is growing in the UK,
on the back of high-profile moves from Cadbury, Nestle and Unilever to switch to Fairtrade certification
on products like Dairy Milk, KitKat and Ben & Jerry‘s. In an exclusive interview with just-food, Lamb said
there was ―huge potential‖ for Fairtrade outside of Europe and insisted there would be ―an explosion‖ in

Healthy spreads company Smart Balance reports reduced sales but increased profit
For the fourth quarter, the Company reported net sales of $58.9 million, a decrease of 10.1% compared
to last year, and earnings per share of $0.00, compared to a loss of $0.04 per share in 2008. The fourth
quarter of 2009 included $1.5 million ($0.9 million after-tax) or $0.01 per share, of after-tax impact of
one-time costs related to the refinancing of the Company's debt. Fourth quarter net sales decreased in
2009 compared to 2008 due to higher promotion spending and a 1.5% volume decline in case
shipments. The improvement in earnings per share was due to increased gross profit and lower interest
expense and related costs, partially offset by the one-time impact of the Company's 2009 debt
refinancing. The Company increased market share in its core category of spreads by 0.2 points to
13.6% in the fourth quarter versus the same quarter in 2008, representing the 31st consecutive quarter
of market share growth, according to Information Resources, Inc. (IRI) food channel data. For the year,
the Company's market share in spreads increased 1.0 points to 14.6%. Fourth quarter gross profit
increased 8.1% to $29.2 million in 2009 versus the prior year. Gross profit margin for the quarter

US functional beverage growth slows: Mintel

A cooling in the market for energy drinks and fortified waters have contributed to a growth slowdown in
the $8.6bn US functional beverages market, according to market researcher Mintel. Mintel said the
$762m fortified waters category was the hardest hit, recording a eight percent decline from 2008 (but
still up 267 percent on 2004). Energy drinks had also seen a cooling in demand, but had been bolstered
by the rise of energy shot drinks. Mintel forecast the whole functional beverages sector would grow 19
percent in current prices and 7 percent in inflation-adjusted prices between 2009 and 2014. Although
growth in fortified waters and energy drinks had slowed a little, Mintel noted that segments, along with
functional teas, had tripled in growth since 2004. ―The sales downturn, which hit enhanced water harder
than any other segment, was triggered by a convergence of negative factors, including growing concern
over the high sugar content of many functional beverages, frugality motivated by the economic
downturn, and a flood of new product activity that peaked in 2008 and has made choice in the beverage
aisle even more complex just as more consumers are opting to cut back,‖ Mintel said. Mintel includes
$5bn worth of juice drinks and fruit juices in its $8.6bn figure, but noted high sugar levels and lack of on-
pack information have crimped sales. Yogurt drinks and smoothies dropped 10 percent in 2009, with
only probiotic yogurt drinks showing growth.......... Read

More Canadians favour local food over imported, dietitians survey reveals
Knowing where food comes from and how it is grown and harvested as well as how to choose foods for
optimum nutrition is the focus of March's national Nutrition Month campaign. The theme this year is
"Celebrate food ... from field to table!" and a survey released in time for the annual campaign sponsored
by the Dietitians of Canada shows that Canadians favour food produced in this country. Of all the foods
produced in Canada, the most popular identified by respondents were beef, cheese, corn on the cob,
potatoes, apples and maple syrup. The online Ipsos Reid/Dietitians of Canada survey of 2,201
Canadians conducted from Nov. 25 to Dec. 8, 2009, also found 86 per cent of respondents feel

Kids‘ food trends in the spotlight
Some major trends in children‘s eating habits could change as the economy recovers – but foods
marketed as natural and healthful are here to stay, according to a senior analyst at Mintel. There is
growing concern about children‘s health in many parts of the western world, particularly in terms of
rising obesity rates, but what are children actually eating – and what influences their choices? Bill
Patterson, a senior analyst at the market research organization Mintel, told FoodNavigator-USA.com
that children have become more independent in their food choices, but what is available to them is
changing. ―There‘s a huge amount of activity in terms of foods being promoted directly to kids,‖ he said.
―…But particularly with candy and soda, what‘s available to kids has changed.‖ In schools, there has
been a huge effort to reduce children‘s access to less healthy foods and drinks. As a result, sales of
sugary soft drinks have dropped from 33 percent of vending machine drinks sales in 2003 to 20 percent
today, while bottled water sales have risen, and candy is down from 22 percent to 15 percent........ Read

A Yerba Maté beverage is set to be one of the first products on French shelves sweetened with stevia-
derived rebaudioside-A (Reb-A), recalling a traditional use of the plant by Guarani Indians in Paraguay.
The French government approved the use of Reb-A in food and beverages last September, taking
advantage of a two-year window before anticipated EU-wide approval. In January it increased the
permitted levels in a number of categories, and allowed it to be used in table top sweeteners for the first
time. Now a Swedish company, Liv Natur, is preparing to launch a Yerba Maté beverage with Reb A
supplied by Granular. Yerba Maté is made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree which, like the
stevia rebaudiana plant, is native to Paraguay. According to a spokesperson from Granular, stevia
leaves have been used by the Indians in Paraguay to sweeten mate, which have a naturally slightly
bitter taste. The product will be sold as Live Maté in France from April. It is thought to be the first
beverage launched anywhere to be sweetened with Reb-A alone. Other beverages introduced in the US
and other markets have combined stevia-sweeteners with other sweeteners to ensure the best taste
profile. Formulated without the use of flavour-maskers to cover off-notes that can, in some cases, occur
with stevia, Liv Maté product does have a small number of calories (9.1 kcal per 100ml), but these come
from the fruit juices with which it is formulated........... Read

Tahitian Noni redefines flagship drink, launches new products
Tahitian Noni International on Thursday launched several new dietary supplements made with nutrients
it claims have a longer shelf life and are more potent than most of its rivals' products -- a move it says
will transform the health supplements industry and rev up sales. The company's flagship supplement,
the Tahitian Noni drink, is made with the tropical noni fruit, which is said to contain a high number of
iridoids that promote such health benefits as supporting the immune system, neutralizing cancer-
causing free radicals, boosting energy and balancing cholesterol levels. "We're walking away from the
superfruit juice space and creating a new one called bioactive beverages," said Jeff Wasden, vice
president of global marketing for the Provo-based nutritional supplements direct seller. "This gives us a
way to tell our story that's different from other competitors trying to copy what we have." "Our
competitors create beverages from food plants like the mangosteen that are high in flavonoids and
carotenoids, but tend to lack medicinal bioactives or phytochemical compounds that improve the health
and function of your body's systems," Wasden said........ Read

Argentina testing production of super-milk
Argentina‘s National Institute of Agro-technology (INTA) is looking to produce milk which could prevent
diseases. The INTA project started six years ago and is based on modifying the feed of dairy cows to
alter the composition of the milk produced. Scientists working on the project managed to reduce the
cholesterol fraction and increase the presence of two acids, which would prevent diabetes and tumours
and strengthen the immune system, the Argentinean media reported. ―The key to the super-milk is the
strict protocol in the handling of feeding the cows, which includes supplementation with products from
the oil industry, and a small concentration of fishmeal,‖ Argentinean health publication M24 Salud
reported INTA as saying. ―Pre-commercial products have already been evaluated, such as yogurt, butter
and cheese, obviously with the properties of the super milk.‖ ........ Read

Nutrition experts call for ban on front-of-pack label claims
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should consider an outright ban on front-of-pack labeling
claims, say two nutrition experts in a Journal of the American Medical Association commentary. The
FDA launched a review on the use of front-of-pack labeling in October, suggesting the eventual use of
standardized, science-based criteria on which any front-of-pack health claims would have to be based.
But nutrition experts Marion Nestle and David Ludwig wrote in a JAMA commentary that ―such
standards are inevitably arbitrary and subject to manipulation.‖ They wrote: ―Front-of-package labels
may so thoroughly mislead the public that another option deserves consideration – eliminate all nutrition
and health claims from the front of processed food packages while strengthening the Nutrition Facts
Panel.‖ In particular, they advocate a revision of portion size information on the Nutrition Facts panel, in
order to better reflect actual consumption of a product, and better nutritional education encouraging

EFSA mass rejects probiotics and antioxidants as article 13.1 batch two published
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued negative opinions to ‗most‘ of 416 health claim
dossiers including submissions linking health benefits to vitamin D, probiotics, green tea, black tea,
lutein, beta glucans, meso-zeaxanthin, alpha-lipoic acid and melatonin. EFSA‘s Panel on Dietetic

demonstrated for peptides, xanthan gum, sugar-free gum, guar gum, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA),
fermented whey and linoleic acid (LA). The NDA‘s latest raft of opinions will come as a massive blow to
the European and international functional foods and nutraceuticals industries, especially the herbal

US court allows suing company for weight-loss and energy-boosting claims
A federal judge in San Diego allowed a consumer to sue Vital Pharmaceuticals for allegedly making
bogus claims about the weight-loss and energy-boosting benefits of its Redline energy drinks and
fraudulently concealing the dangers of some of its key ingredients. Zack Aaronson launched a five-
pronged attack on Vital Pharm, asserting two claims based on the drinks' alleged dangers and
deceptive marketing, a claim for fraudulent concealment of the risks and two breach-of-warranty claims.
U.S. District Judge Thomas J. Whelan allowed all but the first two claims to survive, saying Aaronson
presented enough evidence at this stage to proceed. However, Whelan deferred to the Food and Drug
Administration on the safety claims, saying the agency "has both the expertise and the authority to

Microwave sterilisation approved by US regulators
A revolutionary microwave sterilisation processing technique that dramatically extends food shelf life
while preserving its nutrients, taste and texture has been approved by US regulators. The new
technology, developed at Washington State University (WSU), has already attracted the attention of the
US military, a host of major food companies and could be used to preserve food for frontline soldiers
and astronauts on deep space missions, said the team. Scientists involved in the project believe it could
revolutionise how food is preserved and processed. The Microwave Sterilization Process has been
developed over a 13-year period by WSU professor Juming Tang and a team of university, industry and
US military scientists. The technology received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance late last
year to process mashed potato and the group is currently working on authorisation for other foods. The
system also has huge potential to be developed as a pasteurisation tool for such items as frozen

Pine Cone Extract Shows Anti-Allergy, Immune-Enhancing Benefits: Mouse Study

ISSN 1837-7971 © 2004-2010 OzScientific® Pty Ltd 12
Consumption of pine cone extract may reduce the levels of circulating IgE in the blood, and provide a
means of reducing the risk of allergies and enhance the specific immune response to foreign proteins,
say the results of a mouse study. The potential immune effects of pine cone extract (called PPC in the
scientific literature) are linked to the polyphenol-lignin content, which may affect the action of various
proteins involved in regulating the immune response, according to findings published in BMC
Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Allergic disease is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S.
among all ages, and the 3rd common chronic disease among children under 18 years old. The costs
associated with allergic disease are estimated to be about $7.9 billion per year, of which $4.5 billion was
spent on direct care and $3.4 billion on indirect costs, related primarily to lost work productivity. IgE-
mediated allergies affect more than 50 million people in the United States and represent a huge burden
on the health care system. Since numerous studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between
the reduction of serum IgE levels and noticeable improvement in the well being of people suffering from
IgE-mediate allergies, strategies to specifically reduce IgE levels in allergy sufferers is desirable.
Unfortunately, there are currently no orally- active and FDA-approved products capable of reducing IgE
levels and alleviating symptoms for these patients. However, preliminary results obtained from animal
and human pilot studies suggest that oral administration of a pine cone extract can modulate the
immune response in such a way as to reduce serum levels of IgE. If further studies, particularly in
humans, support the potential benefits of pine cone extract, it could be an important addition to the
market.......... Read

Low-carb diet can increase bad cholesterol levels
Cutting down on carbs may help people lose weight, but it may not be so good for lowering cholesterol,
new research shows. People who ate a diet low in carbohydrates but relatively high in fat lost the same
amount of weight over six weeks as those who consumed a high-carb diet. But levels of low-density
lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol increased significantly in the low-carb group, while they fell in the
high-carb group. High LDL levels are a risk factor for heart disease because they are linked to clogged
arteries. Low-carb diets have become increasingly popular in recent years, and proponents claim they
may be more effective for reducing diabetes risk and cholesterol levels, Dr. Teri L. Hernandez of the
University of Colorado at Denver in Aurora and her colleagues write in their report in the American

High-fat diets raise stroke risk in women
A moment on the lips, forever on the hips? A bad figure is hardly the worst of it. Eating a lot of fat,
especially the kind that's in cookies and pastries, can significantly raise the risk of stroke for women
over 50, a large new study finds. We already know that diets rich in fat, particularly artery-clogging trans
fat, are bad for the heart and the waistline. The new study is the largest to look at stroke risk in women
and across all types of fat. It showed a clear trend: Those who ate the most fat had a 44 percent higher
risk of the most common type of stroke compared to those who ate the least. "It's a tremendous
increase that is potentially avoidable," said Dr. Emil Matarese, stroke chief at St. Mary Medical Center in
Langhorne, Penn. "What's bad for the heart is bad for the brain." He reviewed but did not help conduct
the research, which was presented Wednesday at an American Stroke Association conference. It

Ketogenic Diet Has No Major Long-Term Adverse Effects
Years after discontinuing the ketogenic diet (KD), most families have few regrets about their child being
treated with this high-fat diet to control epilepsy symptoms and would recommend it to other parents.
The first study to report on the long-term effects of the KD after it has been stopped appears to also
confirm anecdotal evidence that the diet, which has been around for 80 years, probably will not cause
cardiovascular problems, said lead author Eric H. Kossoff, MD, associate professor of neurology and
pediatrics and medical director of the KD program at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. Lipid
levels that were elevated during the diet returned to normal a median of 6 years after discontinuation.

Bitter Melon Extract May Slow, Stop Breast Cancer
A popular nutritional supplement -- extract of bitter melon -- may help protect women from breast
cancer, researchers say. Bitter melon is a common vegetable in India, China and South America, and its
extract is used in folk remedies for diabetes because of its blood-sugar lowering capabilities, according
to the researchers. "When we used the extract from that melon, we saw that it kills the breast cancer
cells," said lead researcher Ratna Ray, a professor of pathology at Saint Louis University. But their work
was done in a laboratory, not in humans, she noted. The bitter melon extract killed only the cancer cells,
not the healthy breast cells. "We didn't see any death in the normal cells," she said. However, these
results are not proof that bitter melon extract prevents or cures breast cancer. "I don't believe that it will
cure cancer," Ray said. "It will probably delay or perhaps have some prevention." The report was
published online Feb. 23 in advance of print publication March 1 in Cancer Research. For the study,
Ray's team treated human breast cancer cells with bitter melon extract, which is sold in U.S. health food

Eating Out Leads to Weight Gain
Americans spend a large share of their food budget (42 percent) on food away from home (FAFH),
which has been found to be less nutritious than food prepared at home. For the average consumer,
eating one meal away from home each week increases daily intake by about 134 calories and translates
to roughly two extra pounds each year, according to a new study from the USDA‘s Economic Research
Service. Using data from 1994-96 and 2003-04, the study applied fixed-effects estimation to control for
such unobservable influences and found that, for the average adult, FAFH increases daily caloric intake
and reduces diet quality. The effects vary depending on which meals are consumed away from home.
On average, breakfast away from home decreases the number of servings of whole grains and dairy
consumed per 1,000 calories and increases the percent of calories from saturated and solid fat, alcohol,
and added sugar (SoFAAS) in a day. Dinner away from home reduces the number of servings of
vegetables consumed per 1,000 calories for the average adult. Breakfast and lunch away from home
increase calories from saturated fat and SoFAAS on average more among dieters than among non-
dieters............. Read

High Trans Fat Diets Increase Women's Stroke Risk
A new study presented Wednesday at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference
2010 found that high fat diets, particularly those high in trans-fatty acids, can significantly raise the risk
of stroke for women over 50. Dr. Emil Matarese, stroke chief at St. Mary Medical Center in Pennsylvania

those who ate the most fat had a 44% higher risk of the most common type of stroke compared to those
who ate the least. The study was conducted by Dr. Ka He, a nutrition specialist from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Female participants aged 50-79 filled out detailed surveys on their diets.
They were followed up after seven years and of the group who had the highest intakes of total fat, an
average of 85-95 grams a day, 288 had an ischemic stroke, the kind caused by blockages in the blood

Soyfoods Aid Those with Lactose Intolerance
Nutrition experts and physicians who participated in the NIH Consensus Development Conference on
Lactose Intolerance and Health released an important report that concluded individuals who ingest
inadequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D because of real or perceived lactose intolerance need
dietary advice to ensure appropriate intake of missing nutrients. The Soyfoods Association of North
America welcomes the opportunity to work with nutrition and medical groups to develop the type of
dietary advice that can help all Americans with lactose intolerance to find the right food choices to meet
their own nutritional needs and personal preferences. "It is important for all individuals who suffer
discomfort from the inability to digest lactose be given information about all sources of calcium, dairy

High calcium intakes may improve male survival: Study
Intakes of calcium above the recommended daily levels may reduce the risk of dying from heart disease
and cancer by 25 per cent, says a new study from Sweden. Average daily intakes of 1,953 m of the
mineral were also associated with a non-significant lower risk of mortality from only heart disease,
compared to average daily intakes of 990 mg per day, according to findings published in the American
Journal of Epidemiology. Recommended daily intakes of calcium for people between 19 and 50 years of
age are 1,000 mg for both men and women, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). On
the other hand, intakes of magnesium were not associated with mortality from all-causes, heart disease
or cancer, report researchers led by Alicja Wolk from the Karolinska Institutet. Wolk and her co-workers
analysed data from 23,366 Swedish men aged between 45 79, non of whom used dietary supplements.
Between 1998 and the end of 2007, they documented 2,358 deaths from all causes, which included 819
deaths from cardiovascular disease and 738 from cancer. The highest average intakes, almost double

Green Tea May Ward Off Eye Disease

according to Nutrition Business Journal, which recently reported the category grew at 7.6 percent to
$2.7 billion in sales for 2008,‖ said Scott Steil, president, Nutra Bridge. ―Given the upward shift in both
health education and individual responsibility for maintaining one‘s own health, consumers have clearly
made living a healthy, active lifestyle a priority. The robust growth in the sports nutrition market proves
supplements are a core part of such a commitment.‖ NMI‘s 2009 Health & Wellness Trends Database
reported 22 percent of consumers indicated they use sports nutrition products (amino acids, creatine,
protein powders, sports hydration drinks, sports nutrition bars and sports nutrition supplements).
According to Mintel, the sports and energy drink segment gained 164 percent in sales during 2002 to
2007, due in part to the launch of numerous line extensions from Gatorade in the sports drinks sub-
segment...... Read

Scaling Up: Meeting the Demand for Local Food
Robust local food systems offer social, environmental and
economic benefits. Increasingly, wholesale buyers are demanding
locally grown food and growers are looking for new regional
markets. In order to meet the demand for locally and regionally
grown food and move significant quantities of this food into
markets such as restaurants, mainstream grocery stores and
institutions, local food systems need to be scaled up or expanded
from farmer-direct sales of small quantities of product to wholesale
transactions. By scaling up, local food systems have the potential
to borrow some of the economic and logistical efficiencies of the
industrial food system while retaining social and environmental

Food Miles are a ―myth‖ – Canadian report
Buying fresh produce in farmers market and socializing with
one‘s neighbours may be good reasons to buy locally
produced food, but saving the planet, or improving the local
economy, are not. The movement promoting the purchase
of locally produced food has grown in influence in recent
years, in Quebec as in the rest of the world. Beyond the
traditional economic arguments based on a protectionist
approach, it is the environmental aspect which seems
nowadays to motivate the support of groups and citizens in
favour of reducing ―food miles.‖ It is argued that by
discouraging consumers from buying food transported from
distant locations, less energy – and ultimately less
greenhouse gas – is being expanded, thus contributing to the fight against environmental
degradation...a report from Montreal Economic Institute ...... .pdf 4 pages....... Read

UK dairy companies‘ strategy and performance report
DairyCo has just released a report on strategies and performance of major UK dairies
Arla Foods - Arla Foods amba can demonstrate good performance against its strategy to date,
a sound financial position and a profit record sufficient to support continued investment in
facilities and process. Overall Arla Foods amba is an ambitious and profitable business with
significant growth in turnover in recent years and the ratio analysis does not highlight any real
concerns. Arla‟s UK expansion plans are coupled to growing a broader and bigger business. It
seeks to achieve increasing quality in milk supply and improve its performance in low cost
production methods, waste reduction and sustainability. Its past track record would indicate that
there is no reason why this cannot be achieved.

Dairy Crest - Dairy Crest seeks to build market leading positions for existing brands and added
value markets. This could lead to increases in its milk pool, and it also aims to increase the
proportion of milk from direct suppliers to 85% from the current 70%. It is committed to its
current farm suppliers of milk and work with them to develop supply chain efficiencies through
Dairy Crest Direct. It has developed significantly in recent times and delivered to its plans in that
time. Future success will be influenced both by external factors and its success in maintaining
and growing current sales to major retailers and of doorstep deliveries.

First Milk - The emphasis is upon growing the business by adding value wherever appropriate,
ensuring maximum efficiency in its operation and re-building financial reserves by enhanced
profit levels. It does not seek to enter new markets but consolidate and build upon existing ones
making use of targeted investment policies.

Meadow Foods - Meadow Foods have an excellent track record in achieving its stated
strategies. Its future plans focus on continued growth, growing its current milk field and
providing high levels of customer service.

Milk Link - Milk Link have been involved in a series of strategic changes in the last two years
and have re-aligned and refocused in terms of structures and processes to put their business in
the very best position going forward. Whilst seeking growth, their emphasis going forward is on

delivering security and business stability. They have strong emphasis on continuing to drive up
customer service and efficiency of operation.

Mueller - The strategy is one of continued growth in its existing market place by selling more to
existing households and increasing penetration. The business has invested to increase its
capability to service its UK market from Shropshire which provides further opportunity for milk
             suppliers to grow their contracts.

IOM proposes A Population-Based Policy and Systems Change Approach to Prevent and Control
Hypertension
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is one of the nation‘s leading causes of death,
responsible for roughly one in six deaths among adults annually. Nearly one in three adults has
hypertension, which places huge economic demands on the health care system, estimated at $73.4
billion in direct and indirect costs in 2009 alone. In this report, the IOM recommends that the CDC as
well as state and local health jurisdictions focus on population-based strategies that can reach large
numbers of people and improve the well-being of entire communities. Behavioral and lifestyle
interventions--reducing sodium intake, increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, and increasing
physical activity--are among the best examples. The report also highlights the need to improve
providers‘ adherence to the treatment guidelines for hypertension, especially in the elderly population,
and to encourage patients to take medication consistently by reducing or eliminating the cost of
antihypertensive medication........ read the report online....... Read

UK Food 2030 strategy
This new strategy for food has been drawn up
following the publication of the Cabinet office
strategy Unit‘s report in July 20081. Food
Matters called for better integration of food
policy across Government and highlighted two
challenges: climate change and obesity. 2008
also saw food prices rising sharply for the first
time in a generation, provoking riots in some
parts of the world. In August 2009 published
our assessment of UK food security and set
out what we need to do to maintain it. This
document brings all of the challenges together
for the first time. It is now clear that we face a
big challenge in feeding the world. With a growing population, climate change and the pressure we are
putting on land, we will have to produce more food sustainably. We also need to provide the right
information for people to make more informed choices about what they eat. Diet will have a huge impact
not only on our health and our economy, but most importantly on sustainability............ pdf, 84 pages.....

  • 2. Business & Market Intelligence Dannon to Pay $45M to Settle Yogurt Lawsuit (Dannon/Danone must learn from this mistake that making health claims is not that simple) For two years Dannon has been touting Activia and DanActive yogurt products as "clinically" and "scientifically" proven to regulate digestion and boost immune systems. The company even launched a glossy TV ad campaign featuring actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who calls the yogurt "tasty." Yet, despite the claims, a judge in Cleveland this week says Dannon must pay consumers up to $45 million in damages under the terms of a class action settlement, reached in federal court. The agreement also calls for Dannon to change its health claims for Activia and DanActive . "This is victory for just about anyone who benefits from accuracy in food labeling," Cleveland lawyer John Climaco told ABC News. Climaco and fellow attorney Frank Piscitelli Jr., joined with attorneys from California and Florida in winning the settlement, which was approved by U.S. District Judge Dan Polster. "The judge agreed that the company was making claims it simply hadn't proven," says Climaco. DanActive was introduced in January 2007. Activia has been sold nationwide since February 2006. No other Dannon products were involved in the court action........... • 3. David Lord appointed CEO of Warrnambool Cheese & Butter (Australia) WARRNAMBOOL Cheese & Butter has brought in industry veteran and former Parmalat Australia chief David Lord to help with its defence from suitors Murray Goulburn Co-operative and Canada's Saputo. Warrnambool ended almost a year of uncertainty today with Lord‘s appointment as managing director and CEO after Neil Kearney stepped down last April. Interim CEO John McLean will hand over to Lord in June and stay on as an associate director, the company said. But Warrnambool made no mention of how Lord, who spent 14 years at Parmalat (seven as CEO), would play the takeover game, frustrating both Saputo‘s adviser Rothschild and MG‘s KPMG and Corrs Chambers Westgarth. This is because Gresham-advised Warrnambool, which again rebuffed MG‘s offer of $4.35 a share on Friday, has yet to state a price or sit down and negotiate a deal to take Warrnambool‘s to shareholders....... Read Avesthagen working on Rs 700-cr IPO plan (India) Avesthagen is working up its Rs 700-crore public offer plan for the second half of this year but still needs to raise € 22 million (around Rs 138 crore) in the interim, according to its Founder, Chairman and Managing Director, Dr Villoo Morawala-Patell. ―[Last year] We needed € 40 million (around Rs 250 crore by today's currency rates) till the IPO and some of it we have collected as debt and equity,‖ Dr Patell said at a news conference called to announce a Nestle executive and two others joining the Avesthagen board. In the coming months, the company planned to take in a private equity player, seeking project- based funds and also ―do some more [research] licensing deals‖ to shore up its resources, Dr Patell said. She would not divest in her 32 per cent stake during the public offer and did not favour pre-IPO equity placements, she said........ Read Carrefour to cut jobs, close stores in Belgium Carrefour, the world's No. 2 retailer, said it would cut jobs and close stores in Belgium to restore profitability in the country amid intense competition from local rivals. The plan calls for cutting 1,672 jobs and closing 21 stores in Belgium by end-June, Carrefour Belgium said in a statement on Tuesday. Belgian newspaper Le Soir, on its website, called the plan a "social earthquake" while Rudy Demotte, the head of the Southern French-speaking region of Wallonia, said it was a "new shock" for the group's staff. Carrefour maintained that the changes were needed to fix the Belgian operations, which it called "structurally loss-making." The moves come a week after Carrefour said it was reviewing its Belgian operations, which have struggled for years amid fierce competition from Belgian groups Delhaize and Colruyt and discounters Aldi and Lidl. "We have performed less well than our competitors in Belgium and have seen turnover at our hypermarkets (in Belgium) decline every year since 2004, at a time when the market was growing", Gerard Lavinay, the CEO of Carrefour Belgium said at a news conference........... Read Goodman Fielder profit jumps by 25% (H1), however shares fall amid uncertainty (Australia) Goodman Fielder Ltd., Australia‘s largest baker, said first-half profit rose 25 percent after cutting manufacturing expenses and adding new bread brands. Less volatile commodity prices, which reduced the need to change selling prices, stoked profitability in baking as the company added new bread products such as Helga‘s Seed Sensations. The company is focusing on branded products for consumers after last year agreeing to sell its commercial oils unit to Cargill Inc. amid increased wholesale competition. ―The business is continuing to perform solidly into the second half of the financial year and is experiencing a more moderate commodity cost environment,‖ the company said. The company didn‘t issue a forecast for annual earnings. The shares dropped 6.5 Australian cents, or 4.2 percent, to A$1.48 as the close of trading in Sydney. The stock gained 23 percent last year, its first annual gain in three years...... Earnings for 2009 benefited from $37 million of unrealized hedging gains (as of year-end 2009) versus $52 million in unrealized edging losses (as of year-end 2008). Company officials noted that unrealized hedging is more an indicator of market conditions at a given time than of performance. If the impact of hedging were factored out, 2009‘s net earnings would be second only to 2008....... Read DSM Books Q4 Net Loss, Gives No Clear Outlook Dutch life and materials sciences group Koninklijke DSM NV Wednesday gave no clear outlook for 2010 when posting a fourth-quarter net loss--hit by exceptional items related to disposals and impairments-- but did forecast modest sales growth this year in Europe and North America and strong expansion in Latin America and Asia, especially China. "Whilst recognizing the uneven nature of the current economic recovery, we are cautiously optimistic over 2010," DSM Chief Executive Feike Sijbesma said in a statement without giving details. He said the company's sales growth this year will be in line with economic growth. Chief financial officer Rolf-Dieter Schwalb said that if the current economic climate continues through the course of the year, DSM will not achieve its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda margin targets. DSM in 2007 said it aims to achieve an Ebitda margin of at least 18% for its Nutrition activities, at least 19% for its Pharma activities, and an Ebitda margin of at least 17% in Performance Materials. "We will achieve the margin target for the Nutrition activities," Schwalb said Wednesday. Investors didn't like DSM's cautious outlook and sent its share price lower. At 1330 GMT the shares were down 5.0% at EUR31.12. The stock has risen 72% in value over the past 12 months, however. Board Member Nico Gerardu Wednesday said he is still confident DSM can divest its non-core business unit Base Chemicals and Materials, which includes its Agro, Melamine and Elastomers activities this year. "The acquisition of Yara International (YAR.OS) last week by Terra Industries (TRA) indicates M&A activity in the chemicals sector is picking up again, which bodes well for the selling price of our Chemicals and Materials activities," Gerardu said....... Read Cargill sells interest in PNG oil palm plantations CTP Holdings, a Cargill majority owned company, announced that it has signed a sales agreement to sell its interest in oil palm plantations it owned and operated in Papua New Guinea to New Britain Palm Oil. The sale price for the PNG plantations is US$175 million plus certain adjustments for stocks and capital expenditure. The sales agreement covers only CTP‘s oil palm assets in PNG. CTP Holdings continues to own and operate two oil palm plantations in Indonesia. Cargill senior vice president Paul Conway stated, ―The strategic decision to sell our PNG assets is to allow CTP to focus its resources on sustainably growing our Indonesian oil palm plantations. We believe there is more value for our shareholders and customers in focusing on Indonesia. Our PNG oil palm plantations are the only investment we have in PNG. Since no other Cargill business is actively investing in PNG at this time, we did not have any internal synergies to increase the value of this investment.‖ New Britain Palm Oil (NBPOL) is the largest oil palm plantation owner and operator in PNG. All of NBPOL‘s oil palm plantations are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The CTP properties that NBPOL has agreed to buy also are in the process of earning RSPO certification. ―We are committed to being a major player in the global palm oil supply chain. We are currently working with small holders and sustainably developing degraded land in Indonesia to grow our origination capabilities. Combined with our global trading arm and refining capacity, we will be able to meet our customers‘ palm oil products needs,‖ said Conway. While the European market is driven by the expansion of prebiotic ingredient manufacturers into new application areas such as meat and snack products, the US market is driven by continued demand for Fructans, which is the largest product segment in the US prebiotic market. With consumers now sure of the relationship between safe health and nutrition, and focusing more on the need for essential ingredients in diet for improved health, and reduced risk to disease, the market for functional foods is rapidly on the rise, especially with prebiotics segment being the essential growth driver. The future outlook for Prebiotics market is highly encouraging given that several food ingredient manufacturers and food processors continue to seek ways to capitalize on the growing demand for health-oriented foods. Prebiotics is rapidly rising in popularity within the functional food market, thanks to its vast applications in dairy products, health drinks, nutrition bars, breakfast cereals, beverages, bakery products, meat products, mineral supplements, weight loss products, green foods, infant food, and pet food. Concerning global health trends such as rise in number of cases such as obesity and other ailments related to digestive system, bones and joints are fast encouraging consumers to focus on low-carb, well-balanced and healthy diet, which in turn is driving the unprecedented demand for prebiotics at an international level....... • 6. Diabetes could put enormous burden on poor countries Diabetes and its complications -- such as strokes and heart disease -- will place an enormous financial burden on poorer countries in years to come, researchers warned in a report published Tuesday. "Diabetes is moving from being a disease of developed countries to a disease in developing countries like India and China, and this could put pressure on healthcare systems through rising healthcare costs," said Philip Clarke, associate professor at University of Sydney's School of Public Health. Clarke and his colleagues examined records of 11,140 patients with severe diabetes in 20 countries, including the complications they suffered, money spent and length of hospital stays; and they found diabetes hit healthcare costs more severely in poorer countries........ Read Online grocery sales boom in US & UK The UK and US are forecast to remain at the centre of the growing global market for online grocery retailing, new research has shown, as new technology continues to change the way consumers shop. A report published this week by just-food.com shows the UK will remain Europe‘s largest market by some distance. By 2014, market value is forecast to reach GBP20.1bn (US$30.9bn), having more than tripled on the levels seen in 2009. During this time, the online sector‘s share of the retail food and drinks market is expected to increase to 4% in 2010, reaching 9.5% by 2013 and then exceeding 12% by 2014. The US market, by comparison, is expected to reach a value of US$13.55bn, which represents an increase of almost 75% compared with levels in 2009, the report said. Although the market is forecast to continue to experience double-digit growth rates in the region of 11-12% per year, its share of the US retail grocery market is unlikely to rise above 2% during this time, the report claimed. Much of the projected growth within the US market is expected to come from the anticipated spread of broadband access across the country. The online market may also benefit from the increasing tendency of shoppers to research products prior to purchase....... Read Brazil, India ―key to Fairtrade‘s future‖ Brazil, India and South Africa will be central to the future growth of Fairtrade, the executive director of UK-based charity The Fairtrade Foundation has told just-food. Harriet Lamb said a combination in those countries of farmers selling Fairtrade produce and of a growing, more affluent middle class made such markets key to the development of the business. Awareness of the Fairtrade mark is growing in the UK, on the back of high-profile moves from Cadbury, Nestle and Unilever to switch to Fairtrade certification on products like Dairy Milk, KitKat and Ben & Jerry‘s. In an exclusive interview with just-food, Lamb said there was ―huge potential‖ for Fairtrade outside of Europe and insisted there would be ―an explosion‖ in the mark in the US in the years ahead....... The fourth quarter of 2009 included $1.5 million ($0.9 million after-tax) or $0.01 per share, of after-tax impact of one-time costs related to the refinancing of the Company's debt. Fourth quarter net sales decreased in 2009 compared to 2008 due to higher promotion spending and a 1.5% volume decline in case shipments. The improvement in earnings per share was due to increased gross profit and lower interest expense and related costs, partially offset by the one-time impact of the Company's 2009 debt refinancing. The Company increased market share in its core category of spreads by 0.2 points to 13.6% in the fourth quarter versus the same quarter in 2008, representing the 31st consecutive quarter of market share growth, according to Information Resources, Inc. • 7. A cooling in the market for energy drinks and fortified waters have contributed to a growth slowdown in the $8.6bn US functional beverages market, according to market researcher Mintel. Mintel said the $762m fortified waters category was the hardest hit, recording a eight percent decline from 2008 (but still up 267 percent on 2004). Energy drinks had also seen a cooling in demand, but had been bolstered by the rise of energy shot drinks. Mintel forecast the whole functional beverages sector would grow 19 percent in current prices and 7 percent in inflation-adjusted prices between 2009 and 2014. Although growth in fortified waters and energy drinks had slowed a little, Mintel noted that segments, along with functional teas, had tripled in growth since 2004. ―The sales downturn, which hit enhanced water harder than any other segment, was triggered by a convergence of negative factors, including growing concern over the high sugar content of many functional beverages, frugality motivated by the economic downturn, and a flood of new product activity that peaked in 2008 and has made choice in the beverage aisle even more complex just as more consumers are opting to cut back,‖ Mintel said. Mintel includes $5bn worth of juice drinks and fruit juices in its $8.6bn figure, but noted high sugar levels and lack of on- pack information have crimped sales. Yogurt drinks and smoothies dropped 10 percent in 2009, with only probiotic yogurt drinks showing growth.......... Bill Patterson, a senior analyst at the market research organization Mintel, told FoodNavigator-USA.com that children have become more independent in their food choices, but what is available to them is changing. ―There‘s a huge amount of activity in terms of foods being promoted directly to kids,‖ he said. ―…But particularly with candy and soda, what‘s available to kids has changed.‖ In schools, there has been a huge effort to reduce children‘s access to less healthy foods and drinks. • 10. A Yerba Maté beverage is set to be one of the first products on French shelves sweetened with stevia- derived rebaudioside-A (Reb-A), recalling a traditional use of the plant by Guarani Indians in Paraguay. The French government approved the use of Reb-A in food and beverages last September, taking advantage of a two-year window before anticipated EU-wide approval. In January it increased the permitted levels in a number of categories, and allowed it to be used in table top sweeteners for the first time. Now a Swedish company, Liv Natur, is preparing to launch a Yerba Maté beverage with Reb A supplied by Granular. Yerba Maté is made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree which, like the stevia rebaudiana plant, is native to Paraguay. According to a spokesperson from Granular, stevia leaves have been used by the Indians in Paraguay to sweeten mate, which have a naturally slightly bitter taste. The product will be sold as Live Maté in France from April. It is thought to be the first beverage launched anywhere to be sweetened with Reb-A alone. Other beverages introduced in the US and other markets have combined stevia-sweeteners with other sweeteners to ensure the best taste profile. Formulated without the use of flavour-maskers to cover off-notes that can, in some cases, occur with stevia, Liv Maté product does have a small number of calories (9.1 kcal per 100ml), but these come from the fruit juices with which it is formulated........... But nutrition experts Marion Nestle and David Ludwig wrote in a JAMA commentary that ―such standards are inevitably arbitrary and subject to manipulation.‖ They wrote: ―Front-of-package labels may so thoroughly mislead the public that another option deserves consideration – eliminate all nutrition and health claims from the front of processed food packages while strengthening the Nutrition Facts Panel.‖ In particular, they advocate a revision of portion size information on the Nutrition Facts panel, in order to better reflect actual consumption of a product, and better nutritional education encouraging ISSN 1837-7971 © 2004-2010 OzScientific® Pty Ltd 11

  • 13. Consumption of pine cone extract may reduce the levels of circulating IgE in the blood, and provide a means of reducing the risk of allergies and enhance the specific immune response to foreign proteins, say the results of a mouse study. The potential immune effects of pine cone extract (called PPC in the scientific literature) are linked to the polyphenol-lignin content, which may affect the action of various proteins involved in regulating the immune response, according to findings published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Allergic disease is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages, and the 3rd common chronic disease among children under 18 years old. The costs associated with allergic disease are estimated to be about $7.9 billion per year, of which $4.5 billion was spent on direct care and $3.4 billion on indirect costs, related primarily to lost work productivity. IgE- mediated allergies affect more than 50 million people in the United States and represent a huge burden on the health care system. Since numerous studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between the reduction of serum IgE levels and noticeable improvement in the well being of people suffering from IgE-mediate allergies, strategies to specifically reduce IgE levels in allergy sufferers is desirable. Unfortunately, there are currently no orally- active and FDA-approved products capable of reducing IgE levels and alleviating symptoms for these patients. However, preliminary results obtained from animal and human pilot studies suggest that oral administration of a pine cone extract can modulate the immune response in such a way as to reduce serum levels of IgE. If further studies, particularly in humans, support the potential benefits of pine cone extract, it could be an important addition to the market.......... But levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol increased significantly in the low-carb group, while they fell in the high-carb group. High LDL levels are a risk factor for heart disease because they are linked to clogged arteries. We already know that diets rich in fat, particularly artery-clogging trans fat, are bad for the heart and the waistline. The new study is the largest to look at stroke risk in women and across all types of fat. It showed a clear trend: Those who ate the most fat had a 44 percent higher risk of the most common type of stroke compared to those who ate the least. Bitter melon is a common vegetable in India, China and South America, and its extract is used in folk remedies for diabetes because of its blood-sugar lowering capabilities, according to the researchers. "When we used the extract from that melon, we saw that it kills the breast cancer cells," said lead researcher Ratna Ray, a professor of pathology at Saint Louis University. But their work was done in a laboratory, not in humans, she noted. The bitter melon extract killed only the cancer cells, not the healthy breast cells. "We didn't see any death in the normal cells," she said. However, these results are not proof that bitter melon extract prevents or cures breast cancer. "I don't believe that it will cure cancer," Ray said. "It will probably delay or perhaps have some prevention." Using data from 1994-96 and 2003-04, the study applied fixed-effects estimation to control for such unobservable influences and found that, for the average adult, FAFH increases daily caloric intake and reduces diet quality. The effects vary depending on which meals are consumed away from home. On average, breakfast away from home decreases the number of servings of whole grains and dairy consumed per 1,000 calories and increases the percent of calories from saturated and solid fat, alcohol, and added sugar (SoFAAS) in a day. Dinner away from home reduces the number of servings of vegetables consumed per 1,000 calories for the average adult. The report also highlights the need to improve providers‘ adherence to the treatment guidelines for hypertension, especially in the elderly population, and to encourage patients to take medication consistently by reducing or eliminating the cost of antihypertensive medication........ read the report online....... Read UK Food 2030 strategy This new strategy for food has been drawn up following the publication of the Cabinet office strategy Unit‘s report in July 20081. Food Matters called for better integration of food policy across Government and highlighted two challenges: climate change and obesity. 2008 also saw food prices rising sharply for the first time in a generation, provoking riots in some parts of the world. In August 2009 published our assessment of UK food security and set out what we need to do to maintain it. This document brings all of the challenges together for the first time. It is now clear that we face a big challenge in feeding the world. With a growing population, climate change and the pressure we are putting on land, we will have to produce more food sustainably. We also need to provide the right information for people to make more informed choices about what they eat. Diet will have a huge impact not only on our health and our economy, but most importantly on sustainability............ pdf, 84 pages.....
