Media Communications Project Chapter 8: Video Recording
Video Recording Chapter 8 has a section on video recording. How it has changed since it first came about. Video cameras used to have big reels of tape mounted to them. Cameras today don’t have reels of film mounted to them.
How Recording Video Works Works much like a VCR. The camera component's function is to receive visual information and interpret it as an electronic video signal The electrical signals which it receives are recorded on video tape as magnetic patterns.
Recording with Digital Camcorders It works much like with an analog camcorder. Only difference is that it copies sound and video in the form of 1’s and 0’s. You don’t loose any information you have recorded. Digital video information can be uploaded to computers.
Camcorder Recording formats MiniDV: uses tape and allows recording of standard definition digital video. DV is very easy to edit with a PC of Mac. Cons to MiniDV: Slowly becoming obsolete. HDV: Uses tape but records in high definition. Cons to HDV: You need a better computer to upload and edit you work. AVCHD: HD format that is tapeless and saves on hard drives and memory cards. Cons to AVCHD: Again need a better computer to upload/edit your work. Mic inputs are very rare.
Today’s Video Cameras Most new camcorders are digital and are easily connected to computers. Many offer 720p or 1080p HD recording. Are usually very small and easily carried around. One of the newer camcorders for personal use is the Flip. It is small and compact, records in 720p, and has a USB connector build on it.
Price Ranges for Cameras Under $1,000: Home video cameras. $2,000 – $4,000: Higher quality camera that easily transfers film to a computer. $20,000-$100,000: Used for big budget movies.
GL2 Mini DV 3CCD Camcorder $1,800-$2,000 20x zoom Optical Image Stabilization 2.5 inch LCD monitor Weighs 2.5 pounds
Canon XL2 Camcorder $2,800-$3,300 20x Zoom Manual and automatic focus adjustment No LCD display Weighs 7.7 pounds Uses MiniDV tapes to record what you film.
Panasonic AG DVX100B About $2,000 3.5 inch LCD 10x Zoom 24p setting (means you can record 24 frames per second) Resolution is 210,000 pixels in LCD and 230,000 in the viewfinder. Uses MiniDV Tapes.
Other specifications to look for If you plan to make a movie with your video camera make sure it has audio jacks. These jacks would be used to connect a boom mic or a shotgun mic. These microphones are used to help control what sounds you would pick up.
