1 UNIVERSITY STATION A0704 AUSTIN, TEXAS 78712-0107 512.471.6689 WWW.KUT.ORG
“When I’m driving in from a tour and punch that first button on the radio and get
KUT, I’m home. And I count my blessings because it’s the best radio I’ve heard since
I left the Austin city limits. KUT is the cornerstone of Austin’s great music scene. Larry
Monroe, John Aielli, Paul Ray, Jeff McCord, Folkways, Horizontes, all the great shows
play music from all over the world but mainly, music from Austin. That’s what it takes to
build the kind of music community we have here. KUT rocks, swings, boogies, sambas,
cooks, informs, entertains, keeps us honest, makes us proud.” —Marcia Ball
★
Standing arm to arm, KUT’s audience would stretch over 500 miles.
we are here (and here and here and here)
KUT is everywhere. We are the music, the news, the stories that connect Austin with the world, and
the world with Austin. But while our virtual presence in the Central Texas community is strongly felt,
our physical presence is limited, inaccessible, and outdated.
We have a vision for the radio station of the future—a multi-dimensional, hands-on, progressive, and
interactive public broadcast center that enables creative convergence, builds community, and affects
change—in Austin and beyond.
Nationally, more than 500,000 people
access KUT content each week via our local
broadcasts, online services, and Latino USA.
KUT is routinely ranked among the top of more
than 40 ranked stations in Austin for audience
share. It is one of the best performing public
radio stations in the country.
The average weekly radio audience
for KUT rivals the daily circulation of
the Austin American-Statesman.
KUT is the only radio station in Central
Texas offering two HD Radio channels in
addition to its main service – KUT2 all
news and KUT3 mostly jazz.
Podcasts of KUT content—including Radio
Without Borders (live music), Song of the Day,
KUT News Daily Newspod, and Aielli
Unleashed—generate more than 10,000
downloads a week.
1
KUT seeks $9 million to build the KUT Broadcast Center, a 20,000-square-foot facility in
The University of Texas College of Communication’s Belo Center for New Media.
KUT’s 1970s-era production space and internal infrastructure did not anticipate—and
cannot fully accommodate—the networking and desktop power of digital technology.
2
we are here (and it’s not easy)
KUT is growing. We moved into our current facility in 1974. At the time, the station provided a single radio
service and employed about 20 people.
Today, KUT produces an incredible amount of content in the face of staggering and transformative
change in our industry. What once was a one-way radio signal is now a complex network of interactive
communication, and our content must remain relevant whether it appears on the radio, online, in podcasts
or blogs, or via mobile communication devices.
We generate this compelling content, as well as multiple community services, with the help of more than
60 talented employees, most working from the same space we entered 24 years ago.
We are ready for change. A new KUT Public Broadcast Center will bring together—for the first time—
production technology, music libraries, studio space, staff, and the community. But it does more than meet
our basic needs for space. Its forward-thinking design and function will allow us to best serve and involve
our growing community for years to come.
“KUT gives the public a voice and a stage. It is not restricted by country, category
or class. It stays involved in both the local and the national scene as it opens its
doors to new artists and new works that would never be heard in the popular
media. I consider KUT a local resource second only to water.”—Joe Ely

KUT has no street presence and no
visible brand or other indication that it
is a radio station, media, or community
institution of any kind.
KUT has no welcome, waiting, or
preparation space for the many musicians,
artists, cultural and civic leaders it hosts
every day for local, national, and
international shows.
John Aielli creates his award-winning
Eklektikos, KUT’s longest-running program,
in a converted storeroom off a loading
dock marooned on a floor between KUT’s
recording studios and the broadcast
studio/library.
KUT’s award-winning Latino USA is distributed
to 150+ radio stations, yet production occurs
in a building that is wholly separate from KUT
and is slated for demolition.
we are here(almost where we should be)
KUT is ready. We have an important public mission, yet we are sequestered in an inaccessible, anonymous
building. To achieve our vision, we must make ourselves open, visible, and welcoming to the community we
serve.
In both its design and function, the new KUT Public Broadcast Center emphasizes creative collaboration
and expands community interaction. Far more than just more space, it enables an entirely new approach
that will make KUT even more valuable and meaningful to our audiences.
It will let us bring together creative and editorial production and delivery of content in one interactive,
dynamic space. It will let us take advantage of the power and efficiency of digital technology, generating
content on multiple platforms for multiple audiences. It will be visible and accessible to the community,
bridging constituencies and making community connections. It will demonstrate our work from the inside
out, showcasing KUT as one of the most creative, exciting, and community-focused public media organiza-
tions in Texas and the world.
4
KUT hosts 300 live, in-studio
music performances every year, more
than any other radio station in the
country (that we know of).
KUT runs the largest public
newsroom in the Southwest and has
received more than 50 awards for
journalistic excellence.
KUT studios are in frequent
use by NPR, the BBC, and many
others, for interviews with
the artists,educators, and news-
makers who make Austin home.

Today’s KUT:
KUT is one of the top 15 public radio stations in the country with an annual budget of just under
$7 million. More than $5 million comes from listeners and local businesses, and the remaining
support comes from The University of Texas, grants, and other revenue.
“NPR looks to KUT to help us define the future of public radio in America.”

and expedite access to KUT’s music collection, enabling the
station to share its unique music programming in multiple

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Greater Capacity to Serve: Production, Service and Community Interaction
1. Welcoming the World
Creative design and use of our space will showcase our work
to the public, from radio production to online publishing.
New interview and performance spaces will create a positive
and productive work environment for our staff and guests.
Creative and open work and meeting spaces will replace
traditional offices and enable exciting and productive
collaboration between all departments and the community.
2. Produce Anywhere, Play Everywhere
Every studio, control room, and producer desktop will be
networked together—making every corner of the station
part of a powerful integrated media production facility.
Studios will be on-air ready (most with a performance
space), with the ability to immediately stream digital audio
content to multiple platforms.
3. Citizen-Engaged Media
Public-oriented meeting space and new technology will
bring our community into the creative and editorial process.
A Citizen Producer Salon will enable the public to share
their stories with each other—and with the world.
A Civic Forum and Performance Studio will accommodate
live audiences for performances and community meetings.
A StoryCorps studio will allow citizens to tell and share
their personal stories and give the gift of listening to one
another.
8
we are here (with your help)
4. Flexible Technology
Design will maximize the power and efficiency of
digital technology, maintaining flexibility to adapt as
new technologies and media platforms emerge.
New space and technology will allow for digitized
content—including our entire music library—and vast
uses in multiple media and services.
5. Student Body, New Blood
The Center will incorporate professional quality intern
workstations to engage and inspire University students, the
next generation of content creators and consumers.
Greater interaction with the College of Communication will
facilitate an important exchange of knowledge: KUT gains
insight from those at the forefront of new media creation,
while we provide critical hands-on experience and education
on the role of responsible journalism.
6. Prime and Sustainable Location
As a part of a larger institution, KUT can focus resources on
programming and services rather than building operation
and maintenance.
Prominent location in the Belo Center for New Media will
position KUT as part of a leading edge research and teaching
institution and expose it to new resources and ideas.
Designed for LEED certification as an environmentally
responsible and sustainable building, the new facilities will
be a healthy place to live and work.
9
we are here (to stay)
KUT is ready. We have represented the heart and soul of Austin for 50 years, helping maintain our com-
munity’s unique identity in the face of rapid growth. And while we’re extremely proud of our past, we are
even more excited about our future.
As part of the $54 million, 120,000-square-foot Belo Center for New Media, KUT will have an extraordi-
nary opportunity to shine. A landmark new building at a gateway to the University campus, the Belo Center
will be the nation’s premier center for research and teaching on media convergence. The KUT Public Broad-
cast Center will embody the creativity, communication, and collaboration that are the keystones of the Belo
Center.
Our vision is bold, but our potential is endless. The new KUT Public Broadcast Center will reflect our
connection with and commitment to the community, welcoming and inviting collective inspiration.
We invite you to join us, because we’re here to stay.
“KUT is one of Austin’s most valuable treasures. By helping the station reach farther,
we bring our community closer.” —Ray Farabee, Chair, KUT Advisory Board
Inanendlessseaofdigitalinformation,
KUT will serve as a trusted guide—
nurturing and sharing the most
authentic and remarkable voices of
our community and our world.

KUT is the only radio station in Central Texas offering two HD Radio channels in addition to its main service – KUT2 all news and KUT3 mostly jazz. Podcasts of KUT content—including Radio Without Borders (live music), Song of the Day, KUT News Daily Newspod, and Aielli Unleashed—generate more than 10,000 downloads a week. 1 KUT seeks $9 million to build the KUT Broadcast Center, a 20,000-square-foot facility in The University of Texas College of Communication’s Belo Center for New Media.
  • 5. KUT’s 1970s-era production space and internal infrastructure did not anticipate—and cannot fully accommodate—the networking and desktop power of digital technology. 2
  • 6. we are here (and it’s not easy) KUT is growing. We moved into our current facility in 1974. At the time, the station provided a single radio service and employed about 20 people. Today, KUT produces an incredible amount of content in the face of staggering and transformative change in our industry. What once was a one-way radio signal is now a complex network of interactive communication, and our content must remain relevant whether it appears on the radio, online, in podcasts or blogs, or via mobile communication devices. We generate this compelling content, as well as multiple community services, with the help of more than 60 talented employees, most working from the same space we entered 24 years ago. We are ready for change. A new KUT Public Broadcast Center will bring together—for the first time— production technology, music libraries, studio space, staff, and the community. But it does more than meet our basic needs for space. Its forward-thinking design and function will allow us to best serve and involve our growing community for years to come. “KUT gives the public a voice and a stage. It is not restricted by country, category or class. It stays involved in both the local and the national scene as it opens its doors to new artists and new works that would never be heard in the popular media. I consider KUT a local resource second only to water.”—Joe Ely Dynamic Growth 3 FY 2000 98,000 listeners <5000 online $3.2M FY 2007 181,000 listeners + 200,000 online 108 countries $6.1M FY 2000 FY 2007 200,000 150,000 100,000 50,000 KUT has no street presence and no visible brand or other indication that it is a radio station, media, or community institution of any kind. KUT has no welcome, waiting, or preparation space for the many musicians, artists, cultural and civic leaders it hosts every day for local, national, and international shows. John Aielli creates his award-winning Eklektikos, KUT’s longest-running program, in a converted storeroom off a loading dock marooned on a floor between KUT’s recording studios and the broadcast studio/library. KUT’s award-winning Latino USA is distributed to 150+ radio stations, yet production occurs in a building that is wholly separate from KUT and is slated for demolition.
  • 7. we are here(almost where we should be) KUT is ready. We have an important public mission, yet we are sequestered in an inaccessible, anonymous building. To achieve our vision, we must make ourselves open, visible, and welcoming to the community we serve. Far more than just more space, it enables an entirely new approach that will make KUT even more valuable and meaningful to our audiences.
