NORTHEAST  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: American goldfinch HABITAT:  South to California, Utah, southern Colorado, central Oklahoma, Arkansas, and the Carolinas.  DIET: Insects, seeds, and berries  FACT: Males and females, which are both about 13 cm (about 5 in) long, have very different plumage patterns. In the spring the male has bright yellow plumage with a black cap, while the female has grayish-yellow plumage without a black cap.  By: Cuperto
MIDATLANTIC  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: golden eagle HABITAT: Generally open country, in prairies, tundra, open coniferous forest and barren areas, especially in hilly or mountainous regions, nesting on cliff ledges and in trees. DIET: Groundhogs, marmots, foxes, skunks, cats, rabbits, grouse, ground squirrels, crows, pheasants, meadowlarks, tortoises, and snakes. FACT: Bald Eagles are the most recognized raptor (bird of prey) in North America. In 1782, when they became our national symbol, it was estimated that there were around 50,000 Bald Eagles. In 1967 they were placed on the endangered species list after their numbers were depleted to less than 2,000 birds . By: Cuperto
SOUTHEAST  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: bald eagle HABITAT: rivers, large lakes, and other large bodies of open water with an abundance of fish  DIET: fish,trout,salmon,carrion,whales, geese and ducks FACT: Although bald eagles live throughout the continental United States, Alaska, with about 50,000 eagles, has the most. Ideal bald eagle habitat consists of mature shoreline forests with scattered openings and little human use, near water with abundant fish and waterfowl.  By: Cuperto
GREAT LAKES  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: long-tailed duck HABITAT: In breeding season, they are found on low-lying tundra, barren ground in and around the treeline in the Arctic, other areas with open water nearby.  In migration and winter, they are primarily found on the ocean, and also some on the Great Lakes and other large inland fresh water bodies.   DIET: Primarily feeds on mollusks and crustaceans at sea, as well as a few small fish.  In summer breeding season, feeds heavily on aquatic insects, as well as crustaceans, mollusks, fish and amphibian eggs, and plant material.  FACT: Summers throughout much of northern North America.  Winters along both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America, usually from the northern half of the U.S. on northward.  By: Cuperto
MIDWEST  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: rock pigeon HABITAT: The Rock Pigeon has a restricted natural resident range in western and southern Europe, North Africa, and into South Asia. The Rock Pigeon is often found in pairs in the breeding season but is usually gregarious.  DIET: Seeds,fruit,apples,oranges. FACT: According to the  rock pigeon , doves are kosher, and they are the only birds that may be used for a korban. Other kosher birds may be eaten, but not brought as a korban. MOUNTAIN  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: blue grouse  HABITAT: Burned areas, brush in coastal rain forest; montane forests, slashes, and subalpine forest clearings.  DIET: In warm months, the blue grouse eats seeds, berries, and insects. In the winter, the blue grouse eats conifer needles. Some blue grouse are short distance migrators and, depending on where the food is, travel to either higher or lower elevations  FACT: The Blue Grouse is the third largest grouse in North America, and one of the largest in the world. PACIFIC COAST  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: American Robin HABITAT: Towns, gardens, open woodlands, and agricultural land.  DIET: caterpillars, grasshopper, berries, and worms FACT: 3-5 blue-green eggs in a well-made cup of mud reinforced with grass and twigs, lined with softer grasses, and placed in a tree or on a ledge or windowsill. SOUTHWEST  REGION  - UNITED STATES BIRD NAME: Ruffed Grouse   HABITAT: Short grassy meadows and marshy ponds.  DIET: Seeds,worms,fruit FACT: Ruffed Grouse: Medium-sized grouse with crested head and scaled brown upperparts. White underpants have pale brown bars on breast and dark brown bars on belly and flanks. Sides of neck have black ruff. The tail is brown with fine, white bars and white-edged dark band at tip. ATLANTIC COASTAL PLAIN - MARYLAND BIRD NAME: hooded warbler HABITAT: Hooded Warbler: Breeds from Iowa, Michigan, and southern New England south to the Gulf coast and northern Florida. Spends winters in the tropics.  DIET: insects , fruits and warms FACT: These birds nest in low areas of a bush, laying 3-5 eggs in a cup-shaped nest. Hooded Warblers are often the victims of brood parisitism by the Brown-headed Cowbird, especially where the Hooded Warblers' forest habitats are fragmented.  By: Cuperto
PIEDMONT PLATEAU - MARYLAND BIRD NAME:  tree swallow HABITAT: Breeds from Alaska east through northern Manitoba to Newfoundland and south to California, Colorado, Nebraska, and Maryland. Spends winters north to southern California, the Gulf Coast, and the Carolinas  DIET: grasshopper,berries,and worms   FACT: Medium-sized swallow with iridescent blue-green upperparts and white underpants. APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN REGION - MARYLAND BIRD NAME: Blackburnian Warbler HABITAT: forests, woodlands, plantations, and treed pastures.  DIET: less often from twigs and large branches) and leaf bases, hover-gleans from the undersides of foliage, and occasionally hawks flying insects.  FACT: Blackburnian Warbler: Medium warbler, yellow-orange head, black cap and cheek patch, and orange throat. Upperparts are black with white stripes and underpants are white with black- streaked flanks.  By: Cuperto
