Hi! I’m Amy Pape and I would like to teach you about the Sun, Earth and the Moon and their relationship with one another.
Some important terms when talking about the sun the moon and the earth are Rotation and Revolution. Rotation is when an object turns around its own axis. Revolution is when one or more objects circle around another object.
The rotates every 27 days, but all 9 planets revolve around it. The sun is so big in comparison to the earth that it can fit over 1 million Earths inside of it. It is mostly made up of hydrogen, and the Earth is approximately 93 million miles away from the Sun.
The earth rotates around its axis in about 24 hours. It takes 365 ¼ days to revolve around the sun.
When the earth rotates it’s position changes. When the side of the Earth is facing the sun it is daytime and when the side faces away it is nighttime.
The Earths axis tilts as it rotates and this affects the seasons. As you can see in the diagram, summer takes place when the axis it tilted towards the sun. When it is tilted away from the sun, it is normally winter.
Our earth has one moon that revolves around the Earth. One revolution averages 29 days, 12 hours and 2.9 seconds. Since the moons position changes it has four main phases.
The four phases are New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Third Quarter. These phases depend on the moons position between the Sun and the Earth.
Another thing that depends on the moons position are eclipses. There are two types, Solar and Lunar.
A solar eclipse takes place when the moon is positioned directly between the sun and the moon. The moon blocksthe sunlight from reaching an area on earth.
The second type of eclipse is a lunar eclipse. This takes place when the earth is positioned directly between the sun and the moon. This blocks out the visibility of the moon from earth.
